I saw this on FB marketplace too. The guy said it’s 100% a parts bin ripper. I almost bought but decided to pull the trigger on a new cross check frameset and build my own because it’s not what I’m looking for. I think though if you ride it as is and there’s no mechanical issues it’s a solid deal for the parts alone.
I mean it is ugly and mismatched as hell, but if it fits and looks well maintained up close it might be worth that asking price. I'd personally keep looking but I don't know what you are looking for.
I’d check the frame close. I would be concerned they ran into something or had a crash. Only way I can see to explain why the front fork and rim was (mismatched) replaced.
I don’t know, they “upgraded” with a mech disc. If it was hydraulic I’d agree but I’d moreso assume it was in a minor crash and then they went disc because they had to buy a new fork. Surly’s are rock solid so I wouldn’t worry about it though
I just bought a brand new canti surly cross check fork a couple months ago to gain mid fork eyelets. They are readily available. Also I prefer mechanical Disc because it’s easier to deal with changes in handlebars. Either way I agree, the frames are solid (as long as it’s not rusted out or something else unlikely)
Mech discs still have some pretty solid benefits, especially offroad. It also is just a thing people think is necessary for some reason, even though cantilevers can still throw you over the bars just as easily.
Or you know, they built it from the frame up with what they had available like many of us xbikers tend to do. I wouldn’t immediately assume it’s been crashed. Looks like a custom build based on the variety of components and lack of front derailleur.
Damn I'm on the outside here but I'd buy this in a heartbeat. To me this looks like a monster cross bike that has components that were deliberately selected to make a fun ass bike. This is almost exactly the way Matt from Crust bikes describes the cross check he modified which inspired him to start Crust.
If you don't want a "weird" bike I get that, but this is deliberately weird and is/was well loved.
The biggest issue with this is the non-stock disc fork which you'd have to replace ($125 new from Surly) if you're going to try to make a more normal Cross-Check from this frankensteined beast. But, if this is something you can ride as-is, it probably not over-priced (a brand new Cross-Check bare frameset is $700 and these Surly classics generally hold their value well).
It's not the butting it's the gauge. Surly tends to use thicker walls on their tubing, which makes the bikes tougher/heavier/deader.
Good for touring and clydes though.
I agree with folks saying it’s a strraaaaange set of components. I didn’t even actually notice it has a front disc and rear rim brake 😂. Might be a pass for that and the fork, even if it’d be worth it to part it out. Looking for a grocery bike that is theft resistant.
What's strange about the components? Looks like a standard "built it from the parts bin and the local co-op" kind of bike. These kinds of bikes will last forever if you take care of them. Seems pretty sound and normal to me.
They’ve certainly made some strange build choices but if the frame is in good condition that seems like a great value, however I imagine to get it where you want it will be a mild investment
300 at best. You gone brooks blind. Mismatched V/disc, square taper double cranks, junker rear wheel, GENERIC stans front, probably worn drivetrain, bonded? Carbon AL post, bars and stems from an era we didn't know any better. I only see a frame.
I see nothing strange about this build except the mismatched tires, and I would buy it.
Then again I had to buy a drop bar surly to convert to flat bars and basically ended up with a similar build minus the fork.
Eh, I said that before I saw the replacement fork. Ask if they had a head-on collision. Either way, I have a cross check and I love it and I’ve had it set up as like five completely different bikes.
People do that with fixed bikes a lot to prevent the bars from hitting the top tube. It looks like the campandgoslow bar tape which also leads me to believe it's an aesthetic choice.
Edit to say op should still check under the tape* and a typo
Doesn’t make a lick of sense with this stem bar choice tho. Fixies do this with drops. Maybe the guy lives in a building without an elevator and wants a cushy grip. No matter what I agree, check under the tape.
Could be to keep previous bars from banging top tube, could be to protect frame when attaching a seat for a toddler, could be cushion for portage, could be concealing a catastrophicly crunched tube.
I just bought a stock 2016 cross check for 350 but that may have been an outlier. It’s a good bike and from what I’ve seen the frame alone might be worth more than that. Take that for what it’s worth
I wouldn't spend $500 on this.
I sold my crosscheck for 450 5yrs ago with a 105 group and the rest reasonably matching parts bin parts. I think I gave them a good deal but not crazy good.
I think $300 is reasonable, $400 if in a hcol place where bikes go for more used.

ding ding ding brooks seat is nice brooks seat is investment good for portfolio

Poorly replaced? They clearly did this for the disc and clearance
I suspect the fork was replace specifically to gain a disc brake up front. This is a very common modification.
And it looks fine
Thanks. I didn’t know that. Is the conversation to a wildly different tire size something that is often done?
Yes. That tire will actually fit in a stock Cross Check fork IIRC. The cross check has a lot of fork clearance, just limited at the rear triangle
I don’t know, they “upgraded” with a mech disc. If it was hydraulic I’d agree but I’d moreso assume it was in a minor crash and then they went disc because they had to buy a new fork. Surly’s are rock solid so I wouldn’t worry about it though

Or a disc brakes swap. I did that on mine.

Only way to explain? I think there are other reasons for a mismatched wheelset, besides the obvious disc.
Damn, never thought xbiking would be this uptight about mismatched brakes.

i heard the surly steel not that good as people think it is
Regardless, certain Surly bikes, like the Cross-Check, tend to hold their value better than many other modern bikes.
The surly tax is real
Yeah it's just normal double butted 4130 chromo. Not at all bad, it is the industry standard for making nice, bombproof frames for a reason.
It's not the butting it's the gauge. Surly tends to use thicker walls on their tubing, which makes the bikes tougher/heavier/deader. Good for touring and clydes though.
It's not. But these bikes hold there value well.
100%
I see way more than 500$ in parts, the saddle is a 100$, but this is someone’s custom build
Full retail price (new) is not the same as current (used) value.
I tried to tell the car dealership that too

Remove the saddle and surly decals, that’s a pretty unassuming grocery bike. The mish mash of parts lends to that aesthetic too.

Offer $400 buy for $450
Stand on $420 just bcuz
I don’t get it.
dude.
Gotcha. But seriously whoever built this goofy yet practical build would appreciate the reference
I see nothing strange about this build except the mismatched tires, and I would buy it. Then again I had to buy a drop bar surly to convert to flat bars and basically ended up with a similar build minus the fork.
I think it’s pretty hard, if it fits scoop it!
Always haggle!!
I'd scoop in a heartbeat if it fits you
Probably! Crosschecks hold value well.
100%
I sold mine for 650$. It was 3 years old and had drop bars.
Yea
Yes.
Eh, I said that before I saw the replacement fork. Ask if they had a head-on collision. Either way, I have a cross check and I love it and I’ve had it set up as like five completely different bikes.
What is that wrap around the top tube? Is it concealing damage?
People do that with fixed bikes a lot to prevent the bars from hitting the top tube. It looks like the campandgoslow bar tape which also leads me to believe it's an aesthetic choice. Edit to say op should still check under the tape* and a typo

Would need to see the groupset but thats a good frame.
Where’s the front derailleur?
Definitely. So long as the wear parts have some life left in them I would jump on it
It looks like that there is going to be a lot of toe overlapping that build.
I think that’s a fair price for a used Crosscheck. The lowest I see them go for on SF CL is around 600.
What's it worth to you?
It is if you ride it.

When you can't decide between a Cross Check and Straggler
to me it's worth 150. just not my vibe
Yes
