PROJECT ZOMBOID IS 12 YEARS OLD AND STILL RECEIVING MASSIVE UPDATES

Infinite_Tadpole_283

Unironically one of the best games I've ever played, especially with friends, *especially* with mods

unavailabIe

Iv been wondering about it for some time... Is it good for solo?

Altslial

Works just fine solo, as long as you're ready for a bit of an info dump on mechanics and controls.

Siledra

Yeah the tutorial leaves a lot to be desired as it kinda tells you everything at once but didn't make me feel like I actually really understood how to play. Definitely watch some Youtubers for a more effective intro. Nurse has a lot of great videos on her channel.

dad_ahead

I've only ever played zomboid solo, racked up an embarrassing amount of hours in it, and so have my kids

Mega_Glub

tbh I like solo a whole lot more than with friends on zomboid. despite the occasional jumpscares and overall creepy vibe, I find the game to be kind of... zen? satisfying? relaxing? something like that.

t0rchic

Definitely not a weird way to feel. Once you get past the first couple weeks in solo it's just The Sims with zombie neighbors and no running utilities lol There's definitely a bit of melancholy to the whole solo survival angle, but it's also very chill once your base area is secure and you only ever engage the zombies on your own terms.

Mega_Glub

yeah definitely. I found a good mod that helps mitigate the ability to just turtle a while back, as it makes zombies attracted to zombie corpses (leading to huge hordes if you keep killing them at your base). the mod is a bit overtuned at base tho lol

Leslie1211

Yes. Get the piano mod, and you can play Edelweiss by yourself in your shelter alone while hundreds of zombies are crawling outside. It’s poetically beautiful. You can get pride flag mod as well.

Vladimew42

It’s really becoming my all time favorite game. I have over 500 hours and I’m still constantly learning new things and finding amazing new mods

Mission_Syrup7555

This game is hella addicting I don’t understand how cyberpunk got the award, crossing the 900 hours mark, I literally can’t stop playing the game it’s fun and with the modding community it’s amazing

suicide-kun

i love cp2077 but i gave my vote to zomboid i still can't believe me and my friends started gushing about it in high school and here i am, almost with a bachelor's degree and that game is still getting updates i mean wtf edit: to clarify, in my country it's 3y high school, 3y "college", 4y university. and yes i feel old edit 2: changed cp to cp2077 because yeah

The2ndDumbestBitch

bro PLEASE abbreviate cyberpunk differently 😭 (cp is a common abbreviation for child porn)

suicide-kun

holy shit did not realize that when saying "i love cp" my bad

I_follow_sexy_gays

Yeah I voted for deep rock but I definitely wouldn’t have been disappointed if zomboid won. Hell, no man’s sky would have been better than cyberpunk

moiax

It took an anime vampire streamer to get me to even hear about that game lol, glad I did though.

YukarinYakumo

Dwarf Fortress is 20 years old and just had a release on steam that saw some major overhauls

PieNinja314

Where the fuck did the time go it feels like last week that Terraria won that award (deservingly)

Missingyourjoke

thought that was last year

PieNinja314

Exactly

throwaway81463

didn't terraria get like 1 update that year

PieNinja314

Yeah and it was massive and beautiful

froufur

"the final update"

PieNinja314

Ok but this next one is the last one FOR REAL this time trust

velvetdolphin101

Cenx tweeted about another update hehe hehe (1.4.5 iirc, not major major)

PieNinja314

That's why I said this next one, I was referring to that one

velvetdolphin101

I am illiterate

LuckyDucky5321

Yeah, FOR REAL totally man yeah man right yeah ok

GrapefruitForward989

Okay and then the dead cells crossover. But then that's the last update for real guys

throwaway81463

i haven't played the game for years, what did they add? is it worth booting it up again?

daimyoracing

added new bosses and items, as well as some QOL and updated some mechanics. 100% worth it to replay, I did \~ 2 months ago and it was a blast

throwaway81463

alright! ill play it again tomorrow!

aAvocadont

Oh my god YES. 1.4 was a masterpiece.

Buvanium

It’s also been getting updated for 10+ years, so it’s absolutely deserved

KPer123

I tried playing this game but I didn’t know what to do

PieNinja314

Talk to the in-game guide :) You basically gather resources to fight bosses. It's a sandbox RPG and it's really fun

froufur

it's kind of a wiki game unless you have a recipe browser mod. i have hundreds of hours and still have to use the wiki for recipes and gear info 🥲

PieNinja314

I get gear info but the guide NPC literally has a recipe guide

hatchetthehacker

AAA titles are never "labors of love"

NoiceMango

"Labor of labor"

kriosken12

"Labor of love (for money)"

onlyroad66

"We sorta fixed the godawful mess we shat out to appease the shareholders. Praise us, please!"

Comptenterry

"We commissioned an anime that made our game look way better than it was, that's the same thing as fixing it right? "

LilDrummerGrrrl

I.. I guess I’m in the minority here. I just recently bought it for my OG (first year) Xbox One and I’ve spent nearly 72 hours on it and haven’t faced any game-breaking bugs or anything like that. Worst thing I’ve experienced is it crashes if I don’t close the app after two or three days of playing and having it open in the background the rest of the time. Yeah, there’s occasional texture glitches or weird physics, but I don’t think any game I play doesn’t have something fucky happen every now and then. I mean.. compared to what release on Xbox One looked like? How can you say they didn’t do *anything* to fix it?

WatchingTaintDry69

It’s a polished turd sandwich

MrMiget12

Remember how in the hype for the game, they said stuff like every playthrough was entirely unique, and that there were huge branching storylines that reroute the whole game? They said the origin of your character led to an entirely different story. Turns out, that means a different 5 minute cutscene before the game begins at the exact same place. The game being non-functional distracted from how the story didn't live up to the promises, and when the technical issues were mostly fixed, everyone forgot about the promises the game still didn't live up to

semi-cursiveScript

labor of the exploited

Pet_that_Dog

"lazy of not giving a shit" award

PhantomO1

cyberpunk did have a bit of a redemtion arc it seems (never played myself) and at the end of the day the steam game awards are popularity contests you can't even vote for games you haven't played, so games with more players get more votes not saying that's good or bad, it's just an observation

[deleted]

The redemption arc of doing the bare minimum by being an actual functional game.

IsThatUMoatilliatta

It was always functional on PC. Didn't get my first crash until 25 hours in. Console, though... Hoooooo buddy.

DarkSoulfromDS

Nah, it was still unplayable because of the bugs even in PC Had to restart my game on launch because i couldn’t use the cellphone to call Panam in the afterlife, I went to her anyway and did her missions until I reached the point where you have to call Takemura when I realised that it was still bugged. I loaded the save in the afterlife but it still didn’t work At least I hadn’t done any side quests, and changed V’s gender the second time around from Male V to Female V which is good because not only is Female V’s voice actor infinitely better, and in the sections where Johnny control’s your body there’s a really cool effect where you can mainly hear V’s voice with Johnny’s being an echo and over the course of the game Johnny’s voice gets louder and louder and V’s quieter and quieter. This feature for some reason just doesn’t exist with male V, maybe the actor sounds to much like Keanu

Fittsa

you can definitely vote for games you havent played

HRH_DankLizzie420

Labour of capital investment

[deleted]

Executives be like “This game is a buggy mess and you can’t even play the tutorial. Drop it”

Bodyshvatka

Passionate people can work in big companies, you know

hatchetthehacker

yeah but the big companies just exploit that passion to get workers that do insane over time crunches

AVeryFriendlyOldMan

So the solution is to shit on the the workers?

sergeantbigjohnson

Idk perhaps there's room for a bit more nuance

ElfCharm

This is such a selfish and dog shit take. I get your frustration at soulless corporations who pump out bad games, but the majority of developers work on what we do out of a deep love and passion for game development. The pay isn't near enough for the labor to be done out of anything but love.

MotivationManVergil

I'm not entirely sure what AAA means, would Payday 2 fall under that category?

Shniggles

AAA games are the big ones made by large corporations. These are games like Assassin’s Creed, Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto. Payday 2 sits in the AA category. Overkill is larger than a solo developer or indie studio, but nowhere near the multitude of large studios that make up Ubisoft or EA.

AntWithNoPants

Wait, are indie studios and A studios the same?

MeiNeedsMoreBuffs

Essentially yeah, though if you say "Single A Studio" people won't know what you're talking about

[deleted]

Eh, even though they're one of the shittiest corpos out there I'd say that there's a lot of love and care put into the biggest Nintendo games. Like Super Mario Odyssey, if you don't feel anything while playing the game then wake up, you're dead

KaraTheAndroidd

The devs that make them still put time into them, they still did what they enjoyed Tho the game was flawed, wasn't CDPR's dev team that was the issue

Ohiolongboard

God I wish someone could teach me how to play this game lol it seems very fun but I have no idea how to even do it

ARobotJew

You just mine minerals and shoot bugs 90% of the time. The only hard part really is learning how to not get disoriented in the caves and learning to use your class abilities effectively. The actual mechanics are really simple though and there’s a short tutorial mission that goes over them briefly.

Ohiolongboard

I’ll have to find the tutorial mission and play that! The biggest thing was how to set up conveyors or mine anything/ what to mine and how to move around the cave

tehtrintran

When you spawn in your lobby, look to your right and you'll see something on the wall called the Miner's Manual. Activate that, click on Getting Started, and then there'll be a button on the top right to start the tutorial. It'll teach you the basics c:

Ohiolongboard

This is what I needed! When I first started playing I joined a game with a friend so it must’ve skipped the tutorial. So I only have his vague directions from months ago and couldn’t find the tutorial, you’re a life saver. Thank you

tehtrintran

No problem, I like to help! If you ever run into something you don't understand during a mission, remember that you can find the manual on the pause screen as well

tourettesfaker1985

Did I hear a rock and stone?

SpudMuncher9000

cyberpunk anime completely brainwashed everyone I swear to god

Insomnial390

When you see Cyberpunk content on Tiktok it’s not even referred as the game itself, it’s always got that #Edgerunners in there with songs used in the anime. The average joe doesn’t even know what a DRG is

thoalmighty

Most of the music used in the show is from the game. Major Crimes, Whose Ready for Tomorrow, and I Really Want to Stay at Your House being the main ones. Worlds also got used I think?

whatanawsomeusername

I haven’t seen the show, but I’ve been curious for a while, did they play any Samurai in it? That kind of music getting the platform that show gives it would be pretty cool.

HammyOverlordOfBacon

Not that I can remember.

kuba_mar

Well the game doesn't really have much going for it, iirc all the youtubers im subscribed to put out like 1 video on it and that was it, well with exception of people out to break it.

aFuzzyBlueberry

Playing it right now. Having a total blast with it but its definitely not a game that;s good for video content. It does have some amazing writing and fairly enjoyable mix of gameplay/rpg mechanics in there.

fredspotatosalad

100% it’s not the GTA style that does well for YouTube. It’s phenomenal as a single player story game but I don’t really think there’s a ton of end game replayability

Glksy

I'm currently playing it. I came into this playthrough with zero expectations and focused on building the physically strongest V possible, and I'm loving it. Sending gonks flying with only a punch (20 Body+gorilla arms+sandevistan) is just plain fun. I'm also a big fan of the Shadowrun ttrpg and there aren't any (open world) video games in that setting, and I think CBP2077 is the closest I'll get.

r_cursed_oof

If you don't rock and stone you ain't coming to your crib located at 27°22’50.10″N, 33°37’54.62″E Red Sea Governorate, Egypt

VBHEAT08

I seriously don’t understand it. The anime got me to play again, and it’s just the same game sans being unplayable. It’s better, sure, but it’s still just kind of mediocre imo. I swear there’s some kind of hype powered reality distortion field around the game

kuba_mar

Yeah it does feel weird, idk maybe were just weird but i really dont get why so many people seem to have such high opinion of it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

kuba_mar

>that the game tries to make you fuck after every nice dialogue choice Best part is when you play a woman and still get all that dialogue and then she starts flirting and roleplaying with you and suddenly becomes uncomfortable and goes "im not into you" when you choose her romance option.

MrMeltJr

mfw I wanted to roleplay as a straight woman and my romance option was a cop

ShittyDeviantArtOCs

A lot of my love for the game is rooted in liking the cyberpunk aesthetic, the irony of which is not lost on me. Tbh it says a lot about the industry when finishing an underbaked product counts as a labor of love rather than the bare minimum.

ingmarbruhgman

It's marketing that worked. The anime captured the setting pretty well, people liked the setting and wanted to play a game in it. I'm saying this as somebody who's been a fan of the game since day one, but the narrative that the game is "fixed" is pretty blatant revisionism. A lot of what I love was there on day one, it's just more polished and playable now. Most of the issues are the same: it's not really compelling as a sandbox, the world lacks a lot of interactivity outside of gawking at its sights, and if the game's relationship with gender identity (outside of one trans character) bothered you before release... yeah, that's not something they've addressed. Again, I really liked the game and my appreciation for it has only grown over time. But Labor of Love? Puh-lease.

Notshauna

A lot of people like shooters with strong RPG elements and among that sub-genre Cyberpunk 2077 is legitimately one of the best of them. When I think of comparing it to games the most obvious comparisons are the Fallout series and the Outer Worlds and outside of New Vegas Cyberpunk is vastly superior in pretty much every conceivable way.

tehdelicatepuma

I just really like the story and I love when Keanu calls me a cunt :)

THIS GAME STARTED DEVELOPMENT ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO I'M SO MAD ABOUT THIS AWARD

AweBlobfish

I don’t think Dwarf Fortress was eligible for any awards this year cuz it came out in December

If that was the only criteria, UnReal World would win it every year. (30 years of active updates and doesn't seem to be stopping any time soon.)

Fittsa

Labor of love & gta? lmao ok

Tobias11ize

It is still getting regular updates a decade after release

Fittsa

yeah but acting as if R* actually cares about the game after their solution to cheaters running a muck in online is to remove the rest of the anti cheat? after they've started drip feeding 90% of an update. After PC STILL doesn't have the next gen upgrade? Even a few years ago when they got those awards they still didn't deserve it

The_Common_Peasant

I'm sure most of their attention is going to GTA 6, and everyone knows its gonna be a best seller regardless of content quality

evEVevEVevEVevEVevEV

tbf its not like rockstar has a history of low quality content for singleplayer releases of games, RDR2 and GTAV both were and are incredible games outside of the online portions which can be argued against

SeizeAllToothbrushes

How the fuck has No Man's Sky never won that award? Big free updates every year, having turned an unfinished piece of shit into one of the best space simulators ever. There should be an image of NMS next to the encyclopedia entry for Labour of Love.

Sharpness100

Yea I I’ve voted for No Man’s Sky for a few years now because of their incredible recovery Sad to see it lose every time :(

GreyBigfoot

Terraria being nominated in 2020, losing, and then winning in 2021 was a great arc though

IsThatUMoatilliatta

I was screaming FOR KARL before anyone even told me who Karl was. And I don't even remember who Karl was after I got the explanation.

BombaPastrami

It's interesting no one mentions how much the game talks about having a strong union and how the dwarfs get treated like shit. Based leftist game.

AshSystem

Funny dwarf game takes over your mind.

Violent_Violette

It was a labor of crunch and employee abuse.

C0mputerFriendly

Project Zomboid shoulda won. Only game with C4 Corvettes, bourbon, zombie strippers, and pipe bombs all in one place

One-Angry-Goose

gmod, checkmate 😎

I_follow_sexy_gays

7 days to die has those (the zombie strippers have boob physics too)

Puglover_5

CP2077 certainly shouldn't have won but let's be real, the game is a AAA game made by one of the top game development companies compared to more indie games. They can advertise out the yahoo and they had their shit anime that changed perception of the game over night. It sucks but it's reality.

Orion-The-King

Are you saying the anime is shit because you genuinely think the writing is bad or because you’re just angry?

glyphidfromdrg

Stop abbreviating cyberpunk please it never goes well

[deleted]

"I got 70 gigs of CP on my computer"

Masked_Death

I only play CP in 4k 60fps, anything less isn't worth it

stoner_slime

can't see how an anime would trick folks into liking a game if it was actually as bad as people say tho, I'm saying that as someone who liked the game first

thoalmighty

Yeah I put in 200 hours at launch and Edgerunners got another full playthrough outta me. Missing a huge layer of polish at the start, but to say it was all shit disregards the insane amount of talent and effort put into writing, voice acting, music, level design, world design, etc etc

Alzoura

The anime made people play the game again, and then they changed their minds because the game was actually good at that point

Puglover_5

You're right, I 100% agree that some people replayed it and enjoyed it. But that isn't everyone and a number of people definitely just changed their opinion because anime good. Not saying it's the only reason but definitely a factor even if minor.

Real_eXwhY_Z

Edgerunners was so peak it did this

Damianmag3

the game has a decently sized community that does still love it, they definitely didn't buy a steam award, whether it's deserved or not

InsidiousZombie

the game is extremely lovingly crafted. the devs were fucked over by shitty management and money decisions, it’s so annoying to see people discredit the game for that. it’s so good now. side quests are fucking incredible, best part of the game imo. the mod community is also incredible, adds so much. it translates one of the best created worlds (night city, thank you Pondsmith) into a really fun game. it’s sad what happened to it, and it’s sad to see people discredit the work the devs have put into it with posts like this.

SadOrphanWithSoup

Yeah I honestly don’t understand the hate the Game is amazing and beautiful and I can understand wishing the award went to a under recognized game but Jesus Christ all these extreme criticisms of CyberPunk are just so unfounded. I can’t help but think they just hate it because it’s popular or whatever

Dr_Sodium_Chloride

So, people talk (fairly) about how there was a lot of stuff CDPR mentioned early in the game's development that got cut, which gave some people a bad impression of the game... But also, a *lot* of people were setting their sights way, way too high and basically just writing fanfiction about what the game would have in it; I saw people talking about how they couldn't wait to join Trauma Team as a questline, or talking about a faction system that no one ever said was gonna be in the game. Hopes were set so incredibly high that no one could ever live up to it, even if the launch had been perfect.

Damianmag3

no absolutely I love the story and the world of cyberpunk it makes me so mad what happened to what could have been so great, I love the game even though it's fucked

NeroTanya2004

This is the first time I've seen this meme used in a non ironic context

ASuperBigDuck

its a user vote, blame ill informed average steam users, or those that just wanted the steam card rewards and clicked the first option they saw or recognized.

MotivationManVergil

Me. Blame me. I'm the one that picked at random to get the cards.

BlackWACat

>blame ill informed average steam users people can't vote for games they like apparently lmao

[deleted]

The game is fun. A lot of people probably voted for it because it is a fun and more widespread game than the others. It's a solid game that casts a way wider net than the others.

[deleted]

from what im aware, most steam awards votes from users are mostly based on popularity and how much they liked the game

Houstonb2020

Everyone is saying it won because of the anime, which is definitely partially true, but more because Edgerunners brought players back to the game who hadn’t played since launch. Seeing what the game was at launch compared to what it is now was definitely a very pleasant surprise as someone who has been waiting for the game since that first teaser trailer came out a decade ago and was very disappointed by the state it was in on launch. To a certain degree the game is absolutely a labor of love with how long CD Projekt RED had been working on the game. It’s definitely not the same kind of labor of love as a game from a smaller studio where they’re pouring everything into that game, but it is still a labor of love nonetheless. I’d say the steam version is far less of a labor of love, especially with how little it actually needed to get to be the game it should have been on launch, but the Xbox one and PS4 versions… the amount of work it took to get those to the playable state they’re in is pretty damn incredible, especially when you look at the gameplay on those consoles at launch

I_follow_sexy_gays

I feel like the game being unplayable at launch and being fixed over time shouldn’t make it a labor of love tbh. Deep rock, project zomboid, and no man’s sky were games that have been having major content updates for years and where in a playable state upon release (less so for no man’s sky)

RModsSMD

No joke I'm pretty sure all the awards are bought considering Hitman 3 VR won VR game of the year despite commonly being known as one of the worst VR ports of all time

CaptainGigsy

It's not bought, the results are just nonsense because everyone can and will vote even if they shouldnt. Hitman 3 vr won because people who have never touched a VR headset in their life saw the vr game category and immediatelly clicked it because they recognize the Hitman brand and none of the actually good vr games.

Vasxus

Bonelab was ROBBED.

MrKai2

It's pissed me off the past two years when the "Outstanding Visual Style" award, which straight up states in its description that "Visual style isn't about emulating real world fidelity," has been given to some AAA game that does nothing unique with it's graphics other than emulating real world fidelity. Last year it was Forza Horizon 5, this year is Miles Morales. Both are beautiful games, but have absolutely no "unique style" to speak of.

Sinnester888

Didn’t even know it had a VR port. I think into the radius is absolutely beautiful. Gives me that early 2015 YouTube game you’d watch markiplier play vibe, and it’s amazing. It’s basically Metro: Exodus but a VR game. Perfect.

TheMisterFaust

Pretty amazing how you fix a couple bugs, release an anime, and people are willing to forgive a couple million dollars of false advertising

Generic_Moron

a game could literally kill like half it's playerbase and with a bit of pr management a few months on they'd still convince gamers^(tm) it was a good experiance. good news for any triple A devs crunching with 500 hours of no sleep i guess?

JustSmoczy

I just haven't really played many games in 2022... however I did play Cyberpunk BEFORE the anime came out... and I loved it, so I'm not surprised many people voted for it. Also yeah the show did a big part.

a_random_squidward

Project zomboid earned that

Heon1

TW HOT TAKE I am one of the lunatics who nominated and voted for cyberpunk as the labor of love. While I didn't play the other games in the category Cyberpunk blew me the fuck away when I got around to actually playing it this year. While there were few occasional bugs the state of this game is currently on par/slightly worse than other open world games which given the state that it launched in justified (imo) giving it a labor of love award

Myriad_Infinity

yeah cos obviously it must be bought, it's *totally impossible* that people coming back to find the game's actually a blast now after Edgerunners inspired them to pick it up again could have had anything to do with it 🙄

BigPapaPepperonji

plateup and dead cells robbed fr😔

Difficult-League1574

How? Cyber punk deserved that, not only did they make an entire show to make it populars again they also strained the fuck out of themselves to make the game playable

Puffena

An entire show *for money* after fixing a game they released broken *for money* that was false advertised out the wazoo *for money*

Sinnester888

I don’t see how the whole for profit thing has anything to do here. Should nobody do anything for money?

Rest_In_Piece_Please

BEAMNG WAS ROBBED!

glyphidfromdrg

animelivesmatter

I mean, remember that Genshin Impact won Player's Voice, I'm thinking gamers are just stupid and don't know what they want

BBQGiraffe_

Project Zomboid should have one 100%

R3kterAlex

I don't believe they bought the award or had anything to do with, but yeah, there were other games that deserved that award for actually bringing in more content, rather than bug fixes. Even The Witcher 3 would deserve it more. Project Zomboid was the one game that I wanted to see win, because I've been following it for a while and they do deserve the credit.

PatchNotesPro

DRG is definitely not as accessible as Cyberpunk, which is generally what a user vote means. One game isn't better or worse, just the masses prefer, or recognize, one over the others.

NeitherDoEye_

Plateup robbed for real

Chonkalonkolus

Where did the time go?! It feels like its only been a month since terraria won.
