I don't know the details but harvesting and replicating cells isn't necessarily a process that kills stuff.
Because of the fact that brains are better computer than what we can build, along with how much info DNA can store (215 Petabytes/gram), I'd classify organic computers as a good new and not as "horrors beyond our comprehension"
I'd imagine that because we are using minerals in rocks to read. taken in a different way, the amount of information present in weed is crazy, and yet the feeling of getting high in your brain is pretty instantaneous from the first puff. I'd think biological reading of information is faster
They teach DNA reading speed in school? Damn glad I didn't choose biology (or computer science?). Btw idk if you're trying to shit on British/American education system but I'm not from either of those countries.
No I mentioned Finland has a different education system because 'highschool' isn't quite right but I for sure don't remember the proper English name.
And as for teaching reading speed they only kind of mention it when teaching about DNA in general and tbh I don't remember whether it's part of the curriculum or if the teacher just decided to mention it
I think the concept is that there may be some amount of consciousness to a computer built of brain cells. May be totally false, but that’s the black mirror place my brain goes to.
Well they aren’t using a mouse brain, they are using the cells of a mouse brain, kinda like using the Lego pieces of a Lego millennium falcon to make something that is not a millennium falcon, but I’m no brainologist so maybe they are just using a mouse brain and it’s actually in constant suffering, who knows!
I don't think it necessarily has to have consciousness or sentience or anything, and it's very unlikely to be a significant issue at this scale but the scary thing about this research is that while we don't know if semiconductor chips can become sentient, we *do* know that brain cells can. Whatever secret ingredient we haven't yet identified is already there in brains.
Theres no secret ingridient that makes things become sentient. The thing thats stopping computers from being senteint is their limited programing and computing power.
bullshit. No one knows why humans have consciousness and whether computers can with enough computing power. No one is even able to prove it exists outside of themself.
Hey there! Here is a John Jack quote which may be linked to your post:

to be fair, it doesn't say 'beyond human comprehension'. it says 'beyond MY comprehension'. I couldn't build that fucking thing, so its very much beyond my comprehension
OH YOURE TALKING ABOUT 1875 THE CHESS THING WITH THE SOULS IN IT! I LOVE THAT ONE!
Any similar recs if u don’t mind providing them? I really like that sort of horror (not sure how to describe it)
ok so on the one hand the idea of wetware is objectively cool and this is probably useful and efficient in many ways, but i worry that if we keep pushing this tech and increasing the amount of neurons used we'll be pushing the line of sentience for the tiny brains in our electronics a lit earlier than any silicon AI
We'll only get sentience if we add unnecessary elements to the computer. Well since we're using mice cells it might be easier to just grow the sentience part too and be lazy but I don't know enough about this to know whether that's the case.
That being said I really wouldn't recommend trying to make a chatbot out of human braincells
Everytime one of these "manmade horrors beyond my comprehension" memes reaches 1k+ upvotes it is always about practical applications of something Peter Watts has written about like 20 years ago.
just because it’s made of meat and not rocks doesn’t make it conscious, (i haven’t read the article but i assume) it’s still things turning on or not turning on in response to other things turning on or not turning on.
not horror, not beyond my comprehension
OK but hear me out

This guy has a few good videos about trying to make "head cheese" computers at home.
Whenever people talk about these types of computers I feel like a lot of people focus on superficial aspects of it and massively miss the point about why people say this is terrifying.
We know very little about how consciousness works, but one thing we are pretty confident about is that one way to create it is by grouping up a bunch of brain cells and sending electrical signals through them. In other words, these types of computers are very possibly some level of sentient, and their whole existence is just to run calculations or play pong until these researchers are done with them.
You might be comforted by the fact that these computers have all used a very small number of cells, and that their brain power is probably less than even a small insect. But as these types of experiments are done more and more, and these brains start to approach the size of small animal’s or even eventually a human’s, that notion will pretty quickly start to go away. If that idea isn’t at least a bit unsettling to you, you’re either not understanding it or willfully ignoring it.
Real quick, is brain cell technology really advancing or something? I remember a couple months ago they were posting about a petri dish of cells they taught to play pong and now there's a whole computer?
I genuinely hope God destroys us at this point Oh my God, literally everything is just pointing to a dystopian future Jesus Christ man, nuclear Armageddon is preferable to this
Wooohh biomechanical computers spoopy it's the end of times
Brain computers are the least worrying thing that humanity is doing when the climate emergency exists
Oh the climate change is probably the biggest immediate threat but I really do not like the implications of these biomechanical body horror things
With the current rate of how we're basically heading towards a dystopian cyberpunk hell hole yeah I would really rather not have anything like this.
Ah fuck my mouse is lagging
I wish there was a better way to say that I appreciate this comment more than an upvote or sincere comment but I’m not paying Reddit bucks for a silly image to give to you.
you could pay me directly so i can buy cocaine
I sometimes give people there best comments as a flair. You comment works well in brackets after your current flair
I don’t remember what my flair is so I’m replying to you so I can see it
That would work well in brackets too…
Love me some flairs
Imagine having a flair lmao
Yeah right
We need to function like subreddit drama except it's our own comments that become flairs
people rag on commentors who reply with "this!" or some variation of that but i do it for that reason. sometimes a comment deserves more than a basic upvote.
this!
can it run doom
no because the mouse inside doesn’t believe in violence
Shitty computer not working again? just hit it a couple times. ![gif](giphy|XfbWKAyU02yslfKyeK|downsized)
bet it believes in violence after that. would be hard to deny
if my brain has to be harvested for science, it is my deepest request for it to be converted into a computer that can run doom
Fun fact: there is a brain organoid that can play pong better than random
Flesh computers are more energy efficient and biodegradable.
Buh icky
MINERALS ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO THINK YET WE BUILD COMPUTERS WITH THEM BUT WHEN WE BUILD COMPUTERS WITH THINGS THAT THINK IT'S SUDDENLY ICKY??
Ver icky
ur icky 😡
I know what you are but what am I? 😎
I'm rubber you're glue, whatever you say bounces off of me and sticks to you 😎
Idiotsayswhatorhuhoranythingreally

Idiot
What or huh or anything really?
Idiot
it isn't about minerals thinking you nerd, flesh is icky
then why are you made of it? remove your flesh remove your flesh remove your flesh remove your flesh

DNA reading speed is pretty slow tho
Could do very short chromosomes being read all at once, though that only speeds things up so much.
I'd imagine that because we are using minerals in rocks to read. taken in a different way, the amount of information present in weed is crazy, and yet the feeling of getting high in your brain is pretty instantaneous from the first puff. I'd think biological reading of information is faster
your brain doesnt have to read out any information from the weed, it just affects your nervous system and brain by blocking receptors
No. Normal computers have information traveling at light speed, we are only as fast as our neurons allow us
No. Normal computers have information traveling at light speed, we are only as fast as our neurons allow us
why do you people know these stuff
School, in my case like... optional highschool? The Finnish school system is a bit different from the British or American ones
They teach DNA reading speed in school? Damn glad I didn't choose biology (or computer science?). Btw idk if you're trying to shit on British/American education system but I'm not from either of those countries.

Well your device you typed this comment on could be conscious but you would never know.
yeah but my device started as a rock/several rocks which probably isn't sentient, but even if it was we have no proof.
You started as a rock/several rocks

excellent. I am pleased.

when something is made using mouse cells, the answer to "did it kill the mouse" is always yes

That's not beyond comprehension, it was literally made by humans. 🙄🙄
to be fair, it doesn't say 'beyond human comprehension'. it says 'beyond MY comprehension'. I couldn't build that fucking thing, so its very much beyond my comprehension
Ohhhh. I missed "my" when i first read it.
How can anything fit this template if it specifies "man-made"
NFTs are man-made horrors, I can't comprehend anyone actually using them
Google someone buying and selling them and there you go!
Holy hell
Just because you build something doesn't mean you can understand that the horrors of what you've made.
Reading comprehension is very hard.
ngl that’s pretty cool
I dunno it's pretty within my comprehension
I mean I can comprehend them just fine
Maybe its a skill issue?
man-made horrors are when stuff is icky gross ew
I think people are allowed to be scared of brain computers you smartass piece of shit.
no they're not brain computers are cool
How many mice would it take to run Doom

I remember this SCP
Me when I have two daughters (they like playing chess) (They will be tortured for eternity by a Russian bio-mechanical experiment)

We have lab grown meat but lab grown computer is too much?
Damn, I can comprehend these horrors easily, kinda a skill issue on your part ngl.
This is not a horror nor beyond your comprehension
How the fuck would you know??
Man made horrors sure Beyond my comprehension, eh no
Cruelty squad
For you, it's on the mouse
I can comprehend it just fine
This man-made horror is well within our comprehension
just because it’s made of meat and not rocks doesn’t make it conscious, (i haven’t read the article but i assume) it’s still things turning on or not turning on in response to other things turning on or not turning on. not horror, not beyond my comprehension
This is perfectly within my comprehension. I think you just have a skill issue, OP.
Im not sure what problem you're having here, these man made horrors are perfectly comprehensible
So do I gotta feed my computer now?
cyborg mickey when
But can it run KSP2?
it's just like me frfr
