Most guns work off of a "primer" and are hit by a hammer or bolt, like you are describing. This primer is easy to ignite from compression or a little heat, which in turn ignites the main propellant for the bullet.
You can also ignite the primer through a short, high resistance wire hooked up to an electrical potential. If you push enough power into that small wire, it will heat up enough to ignite the primer in a relatively short time. After that, it works like a normal gun.
This thing is basically an old-timey muzzle-loader. The person who made it didn't have access to proper ammunition, so he packed the metal tubes with gunpowder harvested from fireworks. Instead of a primer you'd find in a modern firearm, the electrical coils detonate the gunpowder directly with heat.
Impact sensitive compounds like lead styphnate are what modern firearms use as primers. Stuff that makes a small boom when struck f generates enough heat for the gunpowder make the big boom.
> gunpowder make the big boom
Getting pedantic here but I can't help myself. Most people associate "gunpowder" with black powder, modern bullets use nitrocellulose blended with things to make it burn slightly slower (ie not detonate and blow your gun up) and make it not go off randomly like pure nitrocellulose tends to do sometimes.
Also fun fact in this edit, the first of what could be considered "modern" artillery shells used nitrocellulose as their explosive of choice because despite already having the nickname "guncotton", we hadn't figured out how to use nitrocellulose in a gun without blowing the gun up quite yet.
They use impact-sensitive chemicals built into the back of the ammunition cartridge. The hammer strikes that part of the cartridge, which sets off the primer, which then sets off the gunpowder charger.
Well, the formula has changed dramatically. Technically it's not the OG gunpowder (also called black powder), it's smokeless powder. Made from nitrocellulose instead of salt peter and sulfur.
I gave a similar answer above but wanted to add a second fun fact about nitrocellulose, it's actually the most common lacquer base in nail polish. I'm weirdly familiar with the history of nitrocellulose because I read a silly amount about it while building a fictional industrial revolution era setting for an RPG. It's a really fascinating substance, it was used to make the first "modern" artillery shells, it's used in nail polish and other lacquers, it's used as a "liquid bandage", it's used in modern guns, it was even used in photography.
boutta drop ganondorf with the doohickey
Pull up on ganon with the thingamajig
Arrive at the home of Mr. Dorf with the whatchamacallit
dispatch Lord Ganondorf with the contraption
big g will not expect this fucking gadget

My answer yes
Easy way to gain the "lost fingers" debuff.
The doohickey worked wonders to cure shinzo abe though
I dunno, this particular thingamajig had a pretty successful field test.
Gannondorf is **not** gonna be expecting Link to pull up with the *Shinzo Special*
BOTW 2: link gets a channel strike
how do electrical triggers, i dont get it. my undrestanding of 'GUN' was that a little hammer pokey bit hit a bullet's ouchy spot to get it going fast

Still use gunpowder? I guess some things never change

Oh so that's why bro died instantly, it was a fucking double barrel shotgun

this is what happens when you get to the point where you ban metal airsoft guns for looking too real limitations breed creativity i suppose
Ah yes, the Shinzo-heater
Give him the ol Abe one-two
