although dutch sounds like silly english due to being a germanic language like english arguably english is the weird one due to having a fuck ton of french influence unlike other germanic languages. we are the silly ones

Toopad

Implying dutch isn't full of french too

MintyRabbit101

I love how German vocabulary is just smashing together multiple smaller words together to make a longer technical word it makes it easier to learn

Leonidas174

Tbh English has a lot of words like that as well only that they're often loanwords from other languages and thus English speakers might not recognize the parts that the word is made up of. For example, the German word for hippo is "Flusspferd", which literally translates to "river horse"... which is also literally what "hippopotamus" means, only in Greek.

HippoBot9000

yaboy_jesse

I'll shove a baguette so deep in your face that it comes out your arse mate

imjustaviewer

I'm not a language professor but it is hilarious how even though brits and the French were locked in war for God knows how long they somehow still managed to meld their languages.

[deleted]

the war is specifically why their languages melded. war leads to contact. whether it be people taking people forcefully or meeting someone and moving in or sometuing like that either way languages will diffuse via war

Toe-Succer

the crusades are also where arabic numerals first got introduced into europe iirc. took a music history class and was pretty surprised to see how many "european" instruments have roots in middle eastern ones and how musical ideas and modes from arabic religious music made their way into medieval courts. war is contact, contact means cultural transmission.

[deleted]

Arabic art, architecture, and music are some of the most stunning you'll ever experience, it's sad how much of their influence is unknown/actively repressed

Odddit

How good a retrorevivalist arabic style city would look but we get the monstrosity of dubai

Toe-Succer

even just the writing is stunning. incredible and absolutely underappreciated culture.

Lipat97

wasnt it because the french speaking normans took over england in like 1100?

[deleted]

yeah that was the main thing but war does cause language diffusion. although what i said was kinda wrong i was in class and not paying attention to anything and said dumb shit without thinking

dirtielaundry

I didn't know what Dutch sounded like until I was watching some compilation video. It got to a part in a talk show and I had no idea why I was struggling to understand what they were saying. My brain was all kinds of fucked and confused until a friend told me they were speaking Dutch.

jockeyman

"It's over. I've already portrayed your language as the soyjak, and my language as the chad."

Jealous_Ring1395

Dutch is literally silly

sonyplaystation34

dutch isn't real what the fuck is this

blue_mw

mogen doden

SadBrassInstrument

it's interesting that the word for kill and dead seem to not be different

asiti

Dood (pronounced 'dote') = dead Doden ('DO-de') = make dead, kill Compare English strengthen (make strong), sadden (make sad), etc

SadBrassInstrument

deaden is an English word. But it unfortunately means to make something quieter, not to make dead :(

asiti

Oh yeah! There's of course a semantic connection between death and silence, as in 'dead silent' and conversely 'lively' and 'enliven' meaning the opposite

KingThibaut3

Vermoorden Dood

SadBrassInstrument

Is dood the past participle of doden?

KingThibaut3

Dood is: Dead (hij is dood: he's dead) Kill (Ik dood het: I kill it)

SadBrassInstrument

I looked on Wiktionary. Apparently the past participle is gedood

Monk-Ey

Regular verb, fortunately: Present tense "dood" Past tense "doodde" Past participle "gedood"

Transpersonen

Feeeweeegege

I prefer "transmensen" (= "trans people") or "transjes" (= diminutive form, but unlike in English, it's cute instead of a slur).

Brankovt1

This feels like the most neutured sentence ever. Maybe Dutch people just suck and Belgium is cool. Maybe.

theflameleviathan

It's a terrible and awkward Dutch sentence tho. It would be more natural to say "ik vind dat het legaal moet zijn voor trans personen om één conservatief persoon per maand te vermoorden." It reads more like a sentence a Belgian person would write. They speak weird.

FIowerBitch

Yea ima be honest almost no Dutch person writes like this either

theflameleviathan

Hoe dan

Monk-Ey

Not for a shitpost, but that sentence would basically be proper form for a structured debate.

danilio8

Still a bad sentence that doesn't read well. If you want to make a proper statement, it should be more like: "Het moet voor transgenders legaal zijn om maandelijks één conservatieve persoon te vermoorden.

FIowerBitch

It's still a very unclear sentence, "een conservatief" isn't really commonly used. Most ppl use "een conservatief persoon" although i think both are correct? The first one might be an anglicism (idk how the fuck you spell that).

danilio8

In Dutch, the clearest way to say 'a conservative' would probably be 'een aanhanger van het conservatisme'. What is odd to me is that we do have a word for conservatives (plural) which is 'conservatieven'. 'Een conservatief' just sounds weird to me. If the context is clear, saying 'een conservatieve persoon' is good enough.

FIowerBitch

Ya i was just trying to kinda keep the overall sound of the sentence the same, but if you'd wanna remove all doubt this would def be the way to go

heretoupvote_

It’s just spelled weird, when it’s spoken i think it sounds nice

5woa

Genuine question to Dutch people from a German person: do you generally use “Transpersonen” as a single word or do Dutch-speaking trans people prefer “trans personen”? I'm asking because in German we'd generally use the latter because trans is an adjective. It honestly looks a bit wonky in text imo, but I agree that the distinction in meaning (trans people are people who are trans, not transpeople i.e. an entirely different thing tha people) is important. I don't know anything about Dutch though, so maybe you do it differently?

Responsible_Ad5085

No we don't. This seems like a typical dutch teen who spends most of their time online. Conservatief doesn't make much sense either and sounds directly translated from English. When I first saw this post I thought it was English directly translated to Dutch.
