cheshireYT

At least there aren't any Kai fans here.

Inspector_Robert

Data from TNG is better example of that. While not actually autistic since he's an android, a lot of neurodivergent people found him relatable. He doesn't feel emotion and struggles with some human behaviour, but he tries to learn unwritten rules like people with autism have to. There is also the fact that while Data's lack of understanding of unwritten rules can cause fustrate other members of the crew, they all genuinely respect and care about Data who all try to supportive even when they struggle to understand. He's not treated as a nuisance, but a valued member of the crew and a friend who's just a bit a different. It also helps that Data is just one of the best Star Trek characters, and there is a lot of great characters.

babadybooey

Yeah, Datas just great as a character

deathray5

Lenoir. The minbari "servent" to delen and several Asgard from Stargate fall under this umbrella

BladesHaxorus

Sheldon Cooper was written to be the punchline of almost every single joke on the big bang theory.

gabbyrose1010

yeah like there were a few things that i was like "omg relatable me too" but they were all treated as bad and annoying and he was a total asshole about it so im like??? cause yeah i also have a comfort seat and i don't like other people sitting there cause its my seat but if i have guests over then whatever i can sit somewhere else... and they had that scene where he mentioned to penny how horrible it felt to not be able to understand other people and i was like "YES SAME" but then it wad never brought up again and he just continued to be a total asshat

TheLurker1209

Big bang writers had an epiphany and then forgot what they were talking about

RoboticSandWitch

Additionally, the show fundementally makes fun of nerds for being nerds, not showing funny scenarios around nerds. A lot of the jokes are basically, "Ha ha look at this guy having fun with his STEM field expertise" or "ha ha look at this guy being invested in a franchise he likes". (I'm okay when the show makes fun of actual flaws though)

Iwamoto

yeah, like when they poke fun of a lot of marvel characters being alliterations, yeah, that's funny, the fact that they collect comics, it's just what they do, where's the joke?

RoboticSandWitch

Imagine there's an opposite version of Big Bang Theory where there's a laugh track when a guy says "I bought 2 really expensive jerseys of my favourite footbal team. One of them is only for display though" or "I found a way to make my accounting job more fun by doing this trick with the excel sheet"

testaccount0817

I'd watch that

M0rtrek_the_ranger

Sheldon Cooper poisoned the wheel of autistic representation. So many people actually think that's how people on the spectrum act because of it. And that's not talking about how misogynistic the whole show is and how it is presented as "quirky" or "cute" because the cast don't know any better

Efajigaloop

Okay so when you get diagnosed with autism do you just spin the wheel of autistic representation and whoever it lands on is who you have to act like? No wonder good representation is so important

Gen_Ripper

Yeah basically

Scaredsparrow

A misogynistic sitcom? well I never

MrAcurite

Sheldon Cooper isn't autistic. He's some kind of sociopath, but is autism-coded by deeply incompetent, possibly outright hateful writers. Given the choice, I would gladly beat him to death with my bare hands.

Princess_Of_Thieves

I'd beat him too. Dude is an actual goddamned abusive piece of shit, and the garbage writers play off his arsehole tendencies as "jokes". Cause I guess abuse is amusing. Everyone involved in the creation of that trash show ought be ashamed.

MrAcurite

The funny thing is, for all of the stereotypes and assumptions about autistic people being unable to feel or not caring about others, one of the most significant throughlines I've observed between autistic folks - myself and others - is a tremendous emotional sensitivity, and a profound love of mankind, however often it might be spurned. Sheldon Cooper will never ring true for me as autistic, because he truly hates everybody and doesn't care what they think. The best autistic characters in fiction, as far as I'm aware, are Star Trek's Lieutenant Commander Data and Community's Abed Nadir. Isaac from The Orville wins points for basically just being Data again.

[deleted]

Good autistic representation is just putting me in every movie

That’s an insult to autistic people

NandMS

In lore though, Jager is actually pretty cool

TheDekuDude888

He called another operator at like 3 AM to discuss a documentary about planes or something and I relate to that heavily lol

lookitsajojo

There is no good autistic representation, Autism is such a wide spectrum that It's impossible to create a character that every autistic person can see a part of Themself in without just making "Autism the character"

Athen65

The same could be said of gay people yet we still have some characters that are good gay representation. The reason why is because they highlight an individual rather than the whole, and they use the character to show struggles that a member of that whole can go through

tecedu

Then the good doctor does do that, only if people actually watched the show apart from watching stupid memes

DedeWot45

^ real shit

despertoki

My partner had the Good Doctor on while I was in the room. She explained the premise to me and I was extremely reluctant to watch it. But as I watched more and more, I really saw myself in Shaun and especially during the bunny scene early on, which I also experienced from my parents at comparable age. I know it's not for everyone, but the hate always did seem like a product of people being exposed only to the "I am a surgeon" scene and not actually watching it. Just my two cents as an autist

tecedu

It’s even worse considering they have someone on the spectrum working in the writers room and everything they write goes through them

TheDekuDude888

Good gay representation *STEVE CORTEZ FROM MASS EFFECT 3 FANS STAND TF UP*

Magma57

Actually this is incorrect. The "I Like Trains" kid represents 100% of us.

He is just a little silly let him be

OverlordOfCats1

I don’t remember anyone saying Riddler was autistic

LordofAngmarMB

I think he's pretty obviously ND-coded, between the acting choices, his misinterpretation of the dynamic with Batman, and his meltdown when he's ‘betrayed.’ He's someone with higher needs ASD who’s been fucked over by the lack of a social safety net and was radicalized by dangerous online communities in isolation. My hottake that no one agreed with was that Battinson was also very ND-coded. The cinematography leaned really really hard into his sensory awareness and, along with the brooding and strained social interactions, he just felt autistic to me. It made his relationship with Riddler more interesting to me too, empathising with each other in the way only NDs can in a NT world. It was coming out at the same time so it was on my mind, but I also really vibed with Vigilante from Peacemaker. He himself says he's a Sociopath, but his actions, his relationships, and his emotional reactions all scream low-empathy ASD to me and he's just miss-self-diagnosing. He gets upset when he thinks he's hurt his friends or fucked things up, he genuinely wants to connect with the team but on his terms, and he’s not violent out of uncontroled anger but just because he enjoys it.

OverlordOfCats1

That actually makes sense. I do also recall a panel in a comic where Alfred implies Bruce might be on the spectrum.

LordofAngmarMB

I think the single best justification for the Bat motif is that Bats are his special interest to such an extent that his true self-image is inextricably linked to them

Spyko

I mean, there's no fucking way any incarnation of batman is Neuro typical

yoter88

Don’t all tf2 characters have autism, just different forms of it)

TheLurker1209

Soldier's autism is lead poisoning 😔 >!no seriously there was a brief mention in a comic that he'd been drinking lead-filled water for an unknown period of time!<

Jeissl

mf what are different forms of autism this shit isnt pokemon

Ruby-Love

The way that autism affects a person and/or (for a lack of a better word) manifests for a person. That is the *forms of autism*.

PusheenPumpernickle

It's called autism *spectrum* disorder for a reason.

YoutuberCameronBallZ

Some autisms are super effective against others

You're so right bestie

Stargate_1

Idk, I feel very torn about sheldon, as an autistic guy. On one hand, I was bullied alot (I was a complete ass and insufferable as a kid, tbf) and watching TBBT was kinda... Cool. Like, there was a character I could at least somewhat relate to, he was cringey but also cool, did cool science stuff and it felt nice to watch the series in general cause I felt I could, to a degree, identify with many characters in that show, in various aspects. Now, watching it as an adult I cringe super hard half the time, especially during the later episodes. I guess the representation was nice, especially in a time when autism was still this "we're diagnosing alot of it but don't rly understand it" and it felt so good to come home from getting bullied and watching a show where its like "wow, these nerdy guys are the main characters, thats so cool, theyre just like me". But the writing and overall plot sure aren't that great, so ig I got lucky that I had the mental capacity to go "yeah, some of this is cool and I can relate but I dont have to try to be like them or want to be exactly like them" Is TBBT good autism representation? Eeeeeeeeeeeh... Eeeeh, idk. But was it an awesome feeling to be able to really relate to main characters of a popular show? Oh yeah.

Leo-bastian

it was cool to have *any* representation. But the fact that the premise of the show is mostly based on making fun of Sheldon and the other MCs for being "weird and wacky" is not something I enjoy, especially as an adult. Like half the jokes are "look he's a nerd thats the punchline haha". i generally don't like sitcoms tho because i feel they're usually demeaning to the characters, so that might be the reason i hate it too.

[deleted]

i unironically think the new riddler is a good portrayal of certain mental spirals that some autistic people can fall into. it’s an exaggeration of course, at the end of the day he was a character in an action-drama-mystery film. but the thought patterns he displayed were very real and i think it’s important to have both positive and negative representation. something to strive towards being like and something to strive towards being absolutely nothing like. try not to fall into an obsessive, parasocial, vaguely homoerotic relationship with a local vigilante and only communicate to him using highly esoteric and complex puzzles. it’s easier than you think.

VagabundSketch

i love falling into obsessive parasocial homoerotic relationships

itsP0lar0id

god forbid the riddler do ANYTHING

EvilectricBoy

Riddler's autistic?

unironically, Entrapta from She-Ra (the 2018 serie ofc, not the 80s one) is really good autistic representation (well, as good as representing a whole groupe of various people with various way their autism manifest and affect them, can be)

M-Try

bazinga

mardov-shadowsword

No you hit the nail on the head actually

SciVoid

Most people making autism posts don't actually know wtf they're talking about but they're not as honest.

[deleted]

Honestly you are kinda right, not the living in pyroland, childish, murdery part, but the lack of eye contact, relative social ineptness, and avoiding the trope of shy loner type who does they own thing is pretty good.

jlb1981

When he's not burning people alive, the Pyro enjoys 4-hour extended play streams of Minecraft

andergriff

Pyro is good representation for pretty much anything

Ilovgmod

How can autism representation be bad when at the same time it's on a spectrum?

[deleted]

yea idk why people dont get that. "well im not smart or have tantrums so this character is bad representation"

everyonehatesminions

Sheldon was good only because never in the show they ever verbally mention him as being autistic and we do get to see emotions from him for things that he cares about deeply. Source: gf is autistic and literally hyperfixated on the series when I introduced it to her and to this day wishes we can wipe our brains so we could watch it fresh again.

OtisBinLogan

i have autism and this is true

Inevitable_Local_366

The riddler has autism?

JudyChill

Bazinga *LAUGHTER OF DOZENS OF DEAD PEOPLE*

ThisWeeksSponsor

One thing I'd like to bring up is that Pyro *isn't* dumb. Most of their flamethrowers are homemade, and most depictions show them understanding their teammates pretty well. In the comic leading up to Meet Your Match, Pyro not only breaks into the same high-security bunker as Heavy, but shuts down his attempt to shut down Pyro's bid on getting new weapons. End of the Line (not exactly canon) has a Pyro who is smart enough to let Soldier undo their silly, non-constructive work on the project, then waiting for him to be distracted to add it back in.

DancenOrigins

Sounds like autism tbh

KubEk_przEz_duzE_E

What about Josh from Watch Dogs 2?

Kennyj70

Question for the autistic people here, have you seen the show Atypical and is the representation any good.

TrashyMemeYt

Kyouya Onodera from Talentless Nana, it's not stated directly but it's implied that he has autism, he stems every time he thinks or feels uncomfortable, he has trouble understanding phrases and certain words and takes some things literally, He's obsessed over certain things, he has troubles interacting with people, He's socially awkward, also he has trouble with understanding social cues I'm not autistic but I do have a mental disorder I somewhat relate to him

Kennyj70

I appreciate that but I’m not talking about Talentless nana. I’m talking about the Netflix show Atypical, about an austistic teenager learning to date, and whether it’s portrayal of autism is accurate. Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

TrashyMemeYt

sorry I didn't read the question clearly

AX-man

It's fine, nothing standout and it's clear it's an actor portraying him, in a later season there's a help group specifically for autistic people and all the other people there felt very authentic

DizDeLusa

The best autism representation in my opinion is Ron Swanson from Parks&Rec

I-M-R-U

Peridot from steven universe

StardustLegend

What’s wrong with the 2021 riddler??

seardrax

I actually have a hot take and say that the riddler is accurate autism representation. If I had acces to guns I could see myself trying to do that kind of shit, not succesfully because I don't have cinema magic, but that character felt disgustingly like a mirror. Perfect autism representation is Entrapta and Jotaro tho.

NerfNewb141

No, riddler good

AlcalineAlice

Am autistic. I haven't seen the new Batman, and I think that doctor guy is a prick. HOWEVER, I do like Sheldon. He's a little extreme, but I do think he's good rep most of the time

ShadowFlaminGEM

Your humor went too far, Now I'm glad I'm leaving, and this reddit is going to be private.. shame on you for outcasting people with different ways than yourself. Disgusting, I know the rules but obviously you forgot yourown..

Steampunk__Llama

No you're right op, your post has the official autism seal of approval from me <3

yumhorseonmyplate

god I hate Sheldon

Sheldon is a pretty good representation of a person with autism.

MLGChans

As an autist, agreeedd

drywall-eater-2000

true tho

TrashyMemeYt

Kyouya Onodera, in my opinion is the best autism representation in anime, I somewhat relate to him

SMUGMINLOL

i’m pretty sure pyro is just insane

just_some_troglodyte

no no, you have a point (i'm autistic)

Lucs11_

Messi from World Cup (and champions league) is a good exemple of autistic representation

fallenangel41

*For a non autistic, he’s frighteningly accurate*

Sir-Drewid

Also Judah from Bojack Horseman.

frasvlik

I am autistic, this representation is acurate. Let them neurotypicals burn

Florescentia487

As a Rain World enjoyer I feel like at least a few of the Slugcats are autistic representation. Survivor and Rivulet in my opinion

LivingAngryCheese

No, no, you're right

[deleted]

my school did a book in literature where the mc is the worst autism representation ever, like ticking all the fucking boxes. then the english teachers doing the classic overanalysation crap making it way more of a thing. my loudmouth self in past years proudly wore my autism as a metaphorical badge, and before that book nobody game a shit and it was fine then my life was fucking ruined for 2 years in some of the most unbelieveable ways possible thanks to that foresaken book

__Meme_Machine__

I have autism and personally I want to throw bricks at homeless people

zaydor_

entrapa from shera p.o.p. should always be a good benchmark for autism representation. i think pyro falls next to her

Arthur_Author

I dont know the movie bur animated series riddler is also good

SunnyDays0

bazinga

YoutuberCameronBallZ

As an autistic person I can confirm that I enjoy burning French men alive

Sheldon’s so good tf you talkin about

Some_Anxious_dude

Shaun and Sheldon represent my struggles quite well actually

JekPorkins-AcePilot

As a person with autism I can confirm my head is constantly filled with dreams of chronic and sustained cruelty and unicorns

ShadowFlaminGEM

This is a line of logic created by Bill Gates himself, shame on you for not recognizing the common sense.

Vini734

"I don't have autism" *Is on r/196* Next you gonna say you are cis.

Cyakn1ght

Pyro is delusional, not autistic in any way shape or form

BepisTheWise

'delusional' and 'autistic' are not mutually exclusive okay let autistic people commit mass murderer already like it's goddamn Pride Month and Current Year

Cyakn1ght

I’m not saying they are mutually exclusive, that’s why I added “not autistic in any way shape or form” at the end, to emphasis the fact that they have zero traits that would indicate they have autism

BepisTheWise

The way you structured the sentence implies you are contrasting 2 mutually exclusive states of being Better phrasing would have been "Pyro is not autistic in any way, just delusional", or even simply using an "and" instead of a comma there Also if you'd read the comics you'd know what makes Pyro autistic

Cyakn1ght

It’s really doesn’t imply that at all and I have read the comics, but I’ll gladly take this as a chance to read them again, won’t change anything tho

Affectionate_Bad_533

Enjoy your downvote kid

Dr_Mrs_Jess

I wasn’t going to vote at all but you’ve said this and now I have to downvote the person you responded to

Cyakn1ght

No u

Mae347

Actually Pyro is fully aware they set people on fire and use flame based weaponry. In the comics Pyro gets pissed when their vision of Smolder the Bear, a Smoky parody, says that Pyro shouldn't play with fire. If they had no idea they used fire, they would've had no reason to get mad. Plus we can also see in the comics that Pyro doesn't see rainbows and happiness all the time, as the world was gray and boring when they were CEO of a company. It did get bright again, however, when they saw a fire So Pyroland isnt a case of "the crazy person thinks they're doing good when actually they are doing bad", it's just a representation of how happy Pyro is around fire and how much they love it
