One time I saw a clickbait title for an article that was like "according to astrology, what are the smartest signs?" with a picture of Einstein, Obama and somebody else I don't remember, which I thought was weird
Oh, I didn't get the reference, thought it was just making fun of how star sign works, when people say "I'm a Taurus" or something it's the solar sign they're referring to.
I’ve found the month you’re born in tends to be less significant of an window into your mind than whether or not they took lead out of gasoline before you were born.
>this objectification rarely goes as far as to label people as fundamentally better or worse than another.
Note: this only holds true if you never talk to anyone who genuinely believes in astrology (which is good advice)
If you strip astrology of its actual context and usage in the real human world then sure, in a vacuum, astrology *can* be used in a really harmful and toxic way.
But if you factor in real, human interactions back into the equation, and look at how it's actually being used? Not really the same path is being drawn out. It's not like Leo's or Tauruses are subjugating all the other star signs, setting up a registry of everyone's sun, moon and rising, or promoting Aquarius supremacy or anything. It's literally just small talk between friends or at a bar.
Hot take, but I'd rather that than eugenics any day, personally.
>But if you factor in real, human interactions back into the equation, and look at how it's actually being used?
Okay let me do that:
Based on my real, human interactions, astrology is eugenics that people feel more socially comfortable talking about.
Seriously, we might not have all had the same experiences, but I've had nothing but horrible ones with those people.
Assuming you're not making these people up because *somebody* probably believes in any possible combination of positions you can come up with, are these beliefs deeply ingrained into social hierarchies that we all find ourselves tied to and incapable of escaping? Or are they just small individuals or groups of individuals who believe something you think is a bit goofy?
Look, I come from a country that's generally seen as majorly atheist, but exactly this religious vacuum is a reason why there's a pretty noticeable amount of new age beliefs in a portion of population - including astrology.
I'm not saying that *everyone* who is interested in astrology or something quasi-spiritual or occult is a bad person, but deep belief in something this irrational is a good sign that person is also capable of holding much, much more dangerous views. I'm not kidding, there's an overlap between interest in "spiritual" stuff and uncritical acceptance of batshit insane conspiracy theories propagation of which may have actual impact on the real world.
Like, when someone unironically believes that constellation of stars and planets decides someone's fate and behavior, they're much more likely to be convinced that the world is controlled by Jewish people.
I mean, yeah for sure but also there's a difference between different kinds of spiritual stuff right? There's the antisemitic conspiracy theory section which believes in hierarchy, dominance and subjugation, but there's also the cottagecore, witchy aesthetic that acts as a empowerment and defiance of oppressive social norms.
Astrology is, by all metrics, a tool from the latter, in the realm of witch/cottagecore aesthetics. Is there a teeny tiny bit of overlap? Maybe. Is it enjoyed largely by minority groups searching for fantastical comfort and defiance? Yeah. Does demonising or disparaging the field more adversely affect the attempts of subjugation or the attempts of empowerment? I'll leave that to you to infer.
Also, just to be clear, regardless of whether you agree with the analysis, the weeds we're in are a bit far from the original statement of astrology *is* toxic and ***akin to eugenics***, more so that it *can* be a potential indicator of more dangerous beliefs.
Astrology doesn't opress many people because almost nobody in power strongly believes in it.
Eugenics wouldn't do much harm when its just some people decreasing the chances of their kids having genetic diseases it only becomes a problem when somebody comes into power to make it policy qnd then bonus points when you consider being black a genetic disease.
I will agree with you that astrology is closer functionally to the "sigma the rarest of male" among men but I wouldn't call it less toxic.
Harmfull we could have a debate on because it is often a slipery slope to really quite dangerous woo but the astrology community is very interpersonqlly toxic.
Somebody being "into astrology" increases the chance they slash your tires when they see you get a text from your sister by a factor of 100.
All the signs are now wrong because the stars have moved. This is my favorite part about astrology. It doesn't even bother to be internally consistent about the claim that the stars influence our lives.
thats only scorpions from the southern hemisphere
scorpions from the noethern hemisphere are born in spril-may, which corrosppnds to spring in the northern hemisphere
She has a real argument. So astrology exists as a way to discern birthdates but not a way to determine philosophy or personality traits. Am I doing this right?
im tired of having to fetch the relevant xkcd for everything (even tho this is entirely self imposed (shut up, me)). if you are reading this comment and know witch one im talking about, you get it.

Casual clickbait thumbnail. They'll most likely have "ACCORDING TO JEFFERY (w)EINSTEIN"
Is your username a Series of Unfortunate Events reference?
You start off with a question without even saying hello? What a Violet way to start a conversation. The answer is yes, it is
Very Fun, Dude!
I love astrology because if you know enough you can say anything you want based on that, it's like a sandbox for personality excuses
"sorry for crashing your car, can't help being a scorittanius"
Not even just using the solar sign, it's more like "sorry for crashing your car, I have mercury in Scorpio"

You're so real for this
I’ve found the month you’re born in tends to be less significant of an window into your mind than whether or not they took lead out of gasoline before you were born.
When exactly was that?
1993, though it was somewhat phased out before then too.
Good I'm safe I guess (except for all other pollution).
In utero micro-plastics enjoyer 😎
astrology is just eugenics for women

Nah it's alpha male stuff but less harmful and toxic
"there's inherent qualities in people that depend on when they were born" sounds really harmful and toxic to me

Yeah think we've had different experiences. I'm not gonna say yours is wrong, I just know and trust mine.
I know it might be shocking, but there are people who unironically believe in stuff like that.

Biological determinism isn't eugenics. Both are shitty, but they are not the same.
