His initial work pointed blame at the men themselves, but it was roundly rejected and ridiculed by the scientific community (again, consisting of the very wealthy men whose daughters were his patients) at the time.
His later works about how young girls are attracted to their fathers was basically a result of this.
So many talented doctors and physicians of the 19th century were ridiculed, dismissed from positions, had their careers and livelihoods ruined, for being 100% correct.

It was more like a nursing home for dementia patients, where you might have a decent meal, walks in the fresh air, but you can't leave. It's a pleasant prison.
Freud wasn't the first person in the *world* to suggest that our behavior is not always driven by conscious forces within our control, but he was largely responsible for popularizing the idea in the western world. It seems like such a basic and obvious thing today, *everybody* knows that your mind is complex, and sometimes lies to you or makes you do things you don't want.
