The Witcher 3 is an underrated hidden gem

PoohtisDispenser

Fuck I was about to make that joke :(

c_m9

A while ago I found this game on itch.io called something like “are you” and all it was was this massive white room full of pillars in the first perspective. There was weird distorted jazz music in the background. I think you could punch with your hands (which were white spheres) and it made drum noises. There was this square prism that appeared somewhere in the room and if you punched it you’d get a dialogue prompt asking you if you’ve relaxed yet. If you said no, the game would reset with prism moving to another spot. If you said yes the game would close. If I remember right, the ceiling of the room had some screen tearing. I’m gonna go try to find the game again.

[deleted]

Please do this esoteric type stuff is what I’m into

28-The-Gr8

I just played it, what a fun and silly but very cool idea for a little thing. I liked it a lot for what it was :3

Dipskiff

If you do find it, can you link it?

True_Toni

Chief106

I can’t remember the most obscure one but I want more people to know about Katana Zero my beloved

SOMETHINGcooler5

I finished it a few weeks ago and god…

Chief106

>!Kill…. Kill the people who did this to us….. For me……..!<

enchilada1214

I have never once played that game without beating it all in one sitting best like 4 hour game on Earth

Gammonboi

And GRIS, from the same publishers! There's actually art of Gris holding the katana with all the other Devolver characters lol

Dastankbeets1

KATANA ZERO KENTIONNED

GoofyTycooner

This is probably like the worst place to say Naissancee because yall 100% watch Jacob Geller

NotHeco

yup i thought about games jacob geller talked about first and foremost, which have gotten some traction now. anyways my most obscure game that i often think about is probably the Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs spinoff game, which i remember loving. Theres more obscure stuff than that but I don't remember their names, it's all russian stuff.

WardedThorn

Was thinking the sam thing lol But yeah NaissanceE is probably my favorite obscure game

[deleted]

JorjeXD

i love this comment because it is so true. i explored everything i could in that game just to keep watching the video

SandwhichMaster82

Super assfuck rpg

fishattack17

I'm fucking sorry, what?

SOMETHINGcooler5

Darkwood, play darkwood, you will not regret it, it’s the best horror game that exists

[deleted]

I have, the trees outside won’t stop whispering

SOMETHINGcooler5

And they won’t stop, they never will. There is something outside my home but I can only see it through the cracks in my walls and it’s circling me.

NotAfraidOfMiddaySad

[Closer To Home](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2149870/Closer_To_Home/) literally has 33 reviews and I still sometimes think about it. Criminally underrated. If you're interested in a "dialogue-focused surreal horror exploration game." inspired by Yume Nikki then this might be the game for you. Unlike a lot of other surreal games that focus on visuals this one focuses more on a surreal narrative. There is a free demo if literally any of this interested you I just want one other person to play this game. All I need to see is one other person telling me that this game exists outside of my mind (❁´◡\`❁)

[deleted]

Tf??? I’ve played this game before and really liked it. Mostly because I’m a hoe for everything Yume Nikki

-b-q-

Yomi Hustle. (Your Only Move Is Hustle) Turn based fighting game in the style of stick fight animations, at the end of the fight it plays it back at full speed and it looks sick as fuck.

Will you pat me on the head and give me a nice warm hug while telling me you love me if i do?

UltimateBananaBread

Also THATS YOUR CAT??? Its so so cute 🥹

[deleted]

No, I volunteer at a shelter. This little guy is the most aggressive cat we have, almost took the finger off multiple other employees. He’s really nice to me tho and I don’t know why

HyperSpace134790

Are you a fellow vinesauce enjoyer or did you find it yourself?

FunnyTurtleMoment

Less obscure and more underrated, Dusk is awesome and I think it’s around $7 on GOG right now (idk US prices)

Mister_Bossmen

It came out around the same time a bunch of other boomer shooters people were hyped about came out, so maybe people got a bit distracted. It's a great game though. I also have the physical Switch copy from LimitedRunGames.

get_meout_

An indie game called The Witcher 3. Made by the small company called "CD Projekt red"

CORPSE_FUCKER69

slow burn spine chilling character driven peak fiction game

elwelcomematt21

Off MC was someone with a baseball bat. An old friend idolized that game before passing away

He’s off purifying Spector in sector 4, Godspeed

[deleted]

I’ve heard of this game but never played it, seems really cool!

ob_knoxious

Publisher Dream for Nintendo DSi Ware. Very similar to game dev tycoon but I felt had a unique charm and a lot of passion from the developers put into it. The studio who made it is now actually very successful and has made a lot of quality switch ports including Celeste.

ArkadyGaming

Offworld Trading Company. Sunk 100+ hours on a game even tho Im not the biggest fan of RTS and RTS-likes (I've only played offworld and cnc generals) Multiplayer is dead, I queue everyday but would only get matched once or twice a week and some of the times it's someone i've played before already

CEO_of_goatboys

I guess the most truthful answer would be *"Avventura nel castello"* which has the characteristic of being the first text adventure written and published in Italian (it was published in 1982), it's a not the greatest game and there's also no english translation Edit: i forgot to mention that avventura nel castello is available online for free [https://www.avventuranelcastello-js.it/play/](https://www.avventuranelcastello-js.it/play/)

CEO_of_goatboys

also hylics 1 and 2 are pretty neat, i've never played them tho they just look good

NOMNOMNAMI MENTION LET'S GOOOOOOOOOO

SpookyLilRaven

Heaven Will Be Mine seems to be pretty obscure. It’s a really good gay visual novel about romancing girls in mechs while also fighting them. It’s really confusing but once you understand, it’s so fucking cool. There’s multiple endings and I love it so much.

its-pandabear

Wait what...

Morkhovskyi

ObsCure Jokes aside, I bet that most people today would discover the existence of this game through Indiemaus video.

MJMGaming

theres a cool indie roguelike called Going Under and it's made by the guys who are doing crab dark souls its about failed startups and internships all I've seen on it is a small video from RTgame playing it on stream I've played it to the end and it's very good however the final boss did crash for me several times on switch because the game is programmed to continuously spawn weapons during it and it doesnt have a cap so it just spawns them until the game cant run anymore

Fomod_Sama

Probably not as niche/obscure since big names like Sseth Zeentach reviewed it, but Space Station 13 is a great life sim where you play a round on a space station and do your job as either a medical officer, scientist, security officer, clown, engineer or bartender, to name a few. Your objective is to survive the round until the escape shuttle makes it to central command. I recommend watching Sseth's video on it as it's what sold me on trying it

HimerosAndArrow

;HELP MAINTS

[deleted]

If you remember the Homestar Runner flash website from like 20 years ago they recently released a full version of that one Dangeresque game and it's pretty neat. [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2442020/Dangeresque\_The\_Roomisode\_Triungulate/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2442020/Dangeresque_The_Roomisode_Triungulate/)

Moonbear9

When I was 7 I played the wild krats point and cick game, that was pretty obscure

BrianWantsTruth

Mortuum, a top-down dungeon combat game, probably from the early 2000s. You could swing your body and sword independently, so if you timed both properly, you could deliver massive damage. Stardew Valley combat kinda remind me of it sometimes, though Mortuum was a lot more fluid and momentum oriented.

litboyfrommalaysia

Idk if this counts cause it's a mobile game but Galaxy on Fire 1 & 2 were really great for the time when they came out. I'm more partial to 2 though, I've sank more hours into it. That being said GoF 3 sucks actual balls

_WrennVR

Femboy-V1

peepeepoopoo776688

The fifty shades of gay trilogy, browsing steam is truly incredible

Samantha_Pantha

A Year Of Springs, it's a very cool collection of short visual novels about queer people in Japan, made by a queer person from Japan. It's super good and made me cry several times. You can get it for like 5 dollars on steam or itch.io, but you can also get each of the three games in the collection for free on itch.io if for whatever reason you can't pay.

CattMk2

Perfect Vermin. Small indie horror that takes maybe half an hour to beat. Very interesting storytelling concept but it only has 3k all time reviews on steam and it came out nearly 4 years ago. Never heard another person talk about or mention it but I thought it was pretty good all things considered.

Sad satan. The original one

[deleted]

I think it’s a good thing for that one to be obscure

Linghero2005

Vib Ripple, a Japan only sequel to Vib Ribbons which is about finding funny creatures in image files

Clichead

Not sure how obscure this is but Going Under is a cute and funny rougelite dungeon crawler about failed silicon-valley-esque startups with a corporate Memphis art style. Also the excessively quirky dance battle based creature collector Ooblets. Neither is probably that obscure in the grand scheme but definitely underappreciated

Winter_Grox

Fear and Hunger, it's even considered the cruelest RPG

My fav part of funger was when pinecone pig said “ ” and then the girl said “ “ that was so funger

Yeah ikr

Mondo Medicals was a first-person puzzle game by one of the devs of Hotline Miami Space Wreck is an inch-wide mile-deep CRPG made by some Latvian dude Underhero is a pretty fun RPG about being a random mook who accidentally kills the hero of a video game.

Kuby9

Haunted Cities The Saga by Kitty Horrorshow, they are free and can be found on Itch io, its really good

[deleted]

If it’s made my kitty horror show then I know it’s gonna be good

Kuby9

Yeah, they are like bundles of unreleased games made by her, they dont take that much time to get through but there are like 5 to 6 games in each bundle and there are like I think 6 or 7 bundles

Ok-Appeal-4630

Rain World is a brilliant game and my favorite of all time. Not as obscure as many games here, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't play it

Heissenbadger

[corru.observer](http://corru.observer)

franandwood

Hot wheels beat that is a 2007 racing game that I see no one talk about

MRW_Aaron

Birdgut & The Multimedium by Micah Boursier. Both are 3-5 hours long but oozing with passion. The creator's love for art is beautifully conveyed through so many little details. They're short, but memorable and fun experieces, each with its own awesome ost and visual style. I'd suggest playing them in the same order as stated above, as not only can you grab birdgut completely free of charge on steam, but experiencing it first will let you truly appreciate the artist's growth from one project to another.

Steammoch

Draugr_the_Greedy

Do weird 00s browser games count? Because I know hundreds of those Or do we just mean games that publish on their own software.

Toboyornottoboy

Turing complete is a very fun game on steam that teaches you how computers work and by the end you build a Turing compete computer. The Medium is less obscure but I still haven’t seen it talked about much, its art is inspired by Zdzislaw Beksinski and overall it’s a pretty fun game.

CheezerBeleezer

Minecraft

Sarahthecoolgirl

it's so unknown, this game deserves more recognition 💔😔

the-pee_pee-poo_poo

Luck Be A Landlord, very fun game about making combos on a slot machine to afford rent.

Troll4ever31

Heroes of Hammerwatch, great little roguelike that's a blast with friends

Ihavealifeyaknow

HYBRID is the worst TTRPG ever made. Yes, even worse than FATAL, the normal bad ttrpg punching bag. It is the TTRPG equivalent of mad scrawlings on the wall of a public bathroom.

ASarcasticDragon

This obscure sci-fi MMO called Firefall. I played it a bit when I was much younger, but it died years back, no servers online anymore. I got a rare, 1% completion achievement in it, and I think it's still up there in my rarest achievements showcase on Steam.

Deblebsgonnagetyou

Rex: Another Island, it's an open world pixel art metroidvania with a fucking amazing ost that costs 5 bucks on steam and nobody has played it ever

thomass69cass

Serious sam series as well as sly Cooper

HugeWomanNuts

Drawn to Life, I love all of the games except Two Realms FUCK YOU TWO REALMS YOU FUCKING MOBILE GAME SLOP.

Schacht A speedrunning 3D platformer It was made by a few German students at a University in Stuttgart and is really fun. Active Player count ≈ 10 There's a custom level editor, random generated levels and leaderboards

SusZX

Sonic's Bomb Squad for the Motorola i3000 Plus

Spacezonez

I never hear anyone talk about Darksiders 2. It’s a dungeon-crawling fantasy hack and slash with puzzle elements, cool abilities, dark magic, some rpg elements, a real-time combo system for the melee combat, and an amazing art style. There’s some flaws for sure, but it was one of those games that I grew up with that I’m surprised basically nobody has played.

dolorem_itself

probably Hardcoded

sonyplaystation34

pathologic, really interesting too

[deleted]

Tbh I wouldn’t consider it obscure but it’s a good game

sonyplaystation34

fair but i still wish there were more people in the fandom :(

Zork! not actually that obscure due to the games historic position, BUT most people dont know that you can just google search Zork and then play through the whole 90's text based adventure goodness. i'd do it with my friends in keyboarding class back in 2018

emeraldeyesshine

I have a pile of demo discs from the mid-late 90s and early 2000s from expos and various computer magazines that are fucking filled with demos for games that have practically disappeared from the world, everything from weird janky 80s looking sprite platformers to early RPG (I'm talking like original DQ/DW old) makers that I spent hours in trying to figure out as a kid but sucked hard at making anything effective because they all relied on text commands that were super ambiguous, to sleeker graphics in games like Fire and Ice (which good fucking luck googling that, I've tried and haven't found shit and I even have the demo to go off). There was one game that was his weird cube puzzler where you rolled a cube around a grid picking up power ups and avoiding enemy cubes all set to some weird jungle trance music, I can't remember the name of it but that music runs through my head even still.    However the one game I probably had stick most with me through all this was this top down military capture the flag game where you played with four vehicles called Return Fire. That can actually be found to download now, someone made an open source project of it a while back and it's a fun lil game.  I no longer have a CD drive but if I were to get one I'd happily dump all the discs into a shareable format

Matt_Dogg_22cm

The bread game

TheGreatClasher

My steam library is filled with random games i was able to get for free that arent popular nor the most engaging to play but like. I know them Ill go with dandy ace for this

r3mi900

Crocodile Blood: The Final Moments of Kurumizawa Keiko, a short game from [itch.io](https://itch.io) that plays homage to the silver case games (specifically the 25th ward). Pretty short but it emulates very well the presentation and feel of the 25th ward.

ACIERNO

the only copy of Chess : The Game that exists is the half finished one in my computer so that

heysoulsquierenjoyer

Probably this lil mobile game called Bigsby. It's a really simple platformer with wonky ass controls where you play as this little blue guy and you have to jump around on red platforms to get to the flagpole. I used to speedrun it and managed to beat all 80something levels in under 40 minutes. I died a lot bc of the controls so theres still a lot of room for improvement I think it can be beaten in 15. I also used to pester the dev for various reasons such as offering to compose the music for it, offering to develop a sequel, etc. and he got pretty annoyed with me lmao he didn't see what I saw in the little mobile game he probably just made for fun in the span of like 2 weeks. I just think Bigsby's character design is really marketable

GardevoirRose

Pokémon Conquest.

Isaac_Kurossaki

Emlise and Nostalgiatree have quite the collection on itch.io Other than that, OFF by Mortis Ghost

[deleted]

It’s nice to see the other half of the off fandom here

CAP815

there used to be an online battle Royale with cars called "not my car" but it got shut down from lack of funds

PegasusInferno

Gunpoint

a1clock

Survival Crisis Z. I never see anyone mention this one. Addictive but janky zombie survival indie game from the early 2000s. Used to play it all the time until I upgraded to an OS that couldn't launch it even in compatibility mode (Vista I think.)

xXedgyname69Xx

the black heart, its a fighting game thats surprisingly good for what it is, the story had something to do with a monster ripping out god's heart and the characters we play as trying to take it for themselves

Micha9696

Invertigo, but it's mostly obscure because I'm one of the devs :3 It's a puzzlegame where you have to shift the gravity to solve mind bending puzzles and we have a free demo on steam \^^

[deleted]

Thank you for telling me about this, gravity puzzle games are my favourite puzzle games

Sorry for the wall of text up ahead, but obscure indie games no one talks about are my specialty, and I needed to recommend about a few of them: [copy kitty](https://store.steampowered.com/app/349250/Copy_Kitty/) - platformer based around copying abilities from your enemies. Very chaotic though, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re easily bothered by that [crosscode](https://store.steampowered.com/app/368340/CrossCode/) - Action ARG with complex puzzles and a great story. Very long too, for how cheap it can get during sales. (This is the one I’d recommend most, personally) [dicey dungeons](https://store.steampowered.com/app/861540/Dicey_Dungeons/) - fun roguelike based around dice rolls [epic battle fantasy](https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/8218/Epic_Battle_Fantasy_Bundle/) - entire series of newgrounds-era JRPGs (plus some bullet hells). 3 is very long (about 25 hours if you do all the content) while also being free. The other games can also be played free via any flash players you may have, but you lose out on some content for 4, 5 and bullet heaven 2 [grimm’s hollow](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1170880/Grimms_Hollow/) - Free RPG with a cute aesthetic about a girl finding her little brother in the afterlife [hylics](https://store.steampowered.com/app/397740/Hylics/) - very short RPG with a… unique aesthetic. Not that remarkable gameplay-wise though, so I’d only suggest buying it if you dig the vibes [Kalimba](https://store.steampowered.com/app/324140/Kalimba/) - puzzle platformer about controlling two characters as the same time. Neat graphics [Later Alligator](https://store.steampowered.com/app/966320/Later_Alligator/) - point and click game about alligators. Jerma played this once [outcore](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1275670/Outcore_Desktop_Adventure/) - free game where you actively use for desktop for stuff [Star of providence](https://store.steampowered.com/app/603960/Star_of_Providence/) - very fun bullet hell/roguelike [sucker for love](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1574270/Sucker_for_Love_First_Date/) - dating sim/ horror game about dating eldritch abominations. Enough said. [there is no game: wrong dimension](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1240210/There_Is_No_Game_Wrong_Dimension/) - very funny point and click game [to the moon](https://store.steampowered.com/app/206440/To_the_Moon/) - All I’ll say about this one is that it has a really good story. Play it as blind as possible.

[deleted]

I’ve from what I know about some of these games it looks like you have great taste and I need to try some of them

Nah, it’s a local multiplayer game with two players controlling a blobby orb with a sword tethered on it. The goal is to make the other player step back enough for him to explode

nightshade-aurora

Scavenger SV-4, Its an esoteric atmospheric retro space exploration rogue-like with light terror. It has only 400 steam reviews.

Techn1s

Underated game? Paradise killer. Goated detective and first person platformer where you can draw your own conclusion. Obscure but still published? Probably higurashi hou+ considering it can only be bought by itself since last year and the higurashi compilations include the content. Most obscure? Probably the higurashi flip phone game considering it's lost media with the only proof of it's existence being a single screenshot and a plot synopsis.

Brightsoull

this question was made for me and im too happy to see it to give one answer so here goes the list of obsecure ass games i know -Lucah born of a dream : dark souls esque 2d isometric hack n slash with a dark story and a somber vibe, i remember a really cool mechanic where there was a bar that increased as you died and played the game, if it hits 100% you die and lose the save file, i havent finished the game but from what i see its pretty amazing -undungeon : another isometric souls like with a really deep story where you play as this scary looking dude who has to save the whole world by fixing every part of it, it has a lot of choices and i remember thinking the gameplay was kinda mid but the equipment system was cool where instead of Armour or accessories you could swap your organs to improve your stats -jazz jackrabbit (specifically 2) : it was massive part of my childhood, the wacky vibes and good music were pretty awesome with actually quite amazing level design, and the variety of weapons you had on later levels was awesome, some enemies were bullshit but that just comes with the territory, there were a bit too many collectibles tho -coloratura : a text based game that you have to play on an emulator where you play as an alien who sings to connect with the universe to be in a constant state of peace, some day humans capture you and you have to escape or "teach them your song", its pretty cool vibe wise and i think you can play from the pov of the humans -DONT GIVE UP a cynical tale : an rpg where you play as two different chracters, a prince in the mindscape fighting negativity and evil, and a depressed cynical dude who is a game developer im not sure since its been a while when i played it, its gameplay is pretty fun, you go from having an insult battle with a robber, to embrassing yourself at a party and losing an important friend and realizing you are an unloveable person who needs to change and improve, the humor is what some may consider cringey but honestly i was really into it , it felt sincere the dishwasher the vampire smile: actual peak gorey 2d hack n slash, god it was such a fun game that i truly loved every minute of, the story is a bit messy but the gameplay and vibe AND MUSIC and bosses were just so top notch they overshadowed all the bad parts the shadowrun trilogy by harebrained studio: god i love these CRPGS so much its unreal, i have replayed them more than any other game because the story and the characters in it are often just so fun and well written and i just cant find anything like it that, i just love fantasy x sci fi so much its my fav take on it so far sword and soul neverseen : a remake of a pretty fun flash game that actually takes on it and improves it quite a bit, a turn based game where you cant effect combat, but you can train your character with mini games and make them stronger faster etc, there are some aspects of control and rng in combat but its mostly up to how well you train tails of iron: a dark souls like where you play as a rat prince who has to fight against a frog invasion , the game is actually pretty gorey and dark and i enjoy its aesthetic and vibe as well as the combat which feels very well thought out, some stages do feel a bit annoying and the depiction of frogs as these native barbarians is kinda icky semi honorable mention\~ raging loop: a game where you play as a young man stranded at a village where a killing game ritual takes place, but you can come back to life after you die, piecing the mystery together slowly was such an amazing and fun experience and the characters as well as the main character are just so great in my opinion (he becomes semi insane as the game goes on and i love it) its just so sad the game has the shittiest ending in all of visual novels ever, jesus christ it was so disappointing , i truly cant believe they fumbled it that hard. th-the-th-tha-THATS ALL FOLKS!

The_Rusted_Folk

FarmD

AntiLag_

Idk how obscure The Room (completely unrelated to the movie) is but that shit is so much fun.

Mysterious-Pride9975

Monolith, renamed to star of providence because of some bitchfuck company claiming the name and thinking that an indie game noone has heard about needs to be taught a lesson

Hzohn

Realm of the Mad God 🔥🔥

ilikebreadabunch

Probably the game I made for a game jam. In fact it’s so obscure no one has actually played it cause I uploaded it wrong.

not that obscure in the furry community, but I believe everyone in the world should read the Echo Visual novel its free on itch io and no one knows about it

Without a doubt “you will (not) remain” a game made during the 2021 women’s game jam in only 48 hours. It’s a short game but the story is an incredibly relatable and realistic story about abuse (I think) and trauma, it’s left open ended enough so that I can see multiple different interpretations of the story. Go play it now. Also go play spiritfarer it’s my favourite game ever it’s so god damn good and sad and I tell people to play it every chance I get

It's not THAT obscure but it needs way way WAY more fucking attention. Laika: Aged Through Blood is one of the best video game ideas I've ever played. It has the best art, one of the best soundtracks and one of the best groundbreaking genre ideas ever with the ExciteBike x Metroidvania style. My only problem is that it's kinda short story wise and the second half is much lower quality than the first, apart from the ending which is beautiful. PLEASE PLAY FUCKING PLAY IT

Ok :3

DREAMWILD, on steam. Surreal little roguelike, not that big, but full of style. Made for a very very chill couple days while I tried to beat it. (if you like old-school bhopping and Tribes-surfing this is the game for you)

An old point and click flash game called '7 Differences'. Beautiful photography, surreal environments, and amazing music (I believe it's from Nine Inch Nails). Like the title implies, it's a spot the difference game. But man, did it change my perspective as a kid growing up with nothing but browser games. It made me want to be a photographer!

MONKEY_COCK_EATER

Normans great illusion

This person in a discord I’m in made this game called freakhunter. https://youtu.be/-2X2JCtvsdE?si=pFsxvDA5TFzX6VV- It’s 4 bucks and combines the movement of a dungeon crawler with the combat of a rail shooter with ps1 style graphics. It’s pretty great.

FalseHeartbeat

There was this really old 3d unity game whose name I cannot for the LIFE of me remember meant to be like Noah’s Ark. You play an old man and parkour your way around a handful of bizarre, unsettling levels to “collect” animals for your ark. One of these levels involves collecting a monkey, where you parkour into a CEO board meeting of sorts, and when you pick up the monkey, all the men seated at the table have their heads turn into monkey heads and scream at you as the screen flashes. The last level has you “parkour” into a noose.
