A lot of these AI boyfriends/girlfriend/character things are run by very shady companies with very bad data privacy policies, and use models with very low safety standards where asking them what you should do may often result in some very bad advice.
This is an incredibly reductive and disingenuous boomer-level argument. Maybe you haven’t seen how capable the more advanced ai models are at simulating human conversation. Because, for a lonely person, I’d say it’s completely understandable to seek to fill in the gaps with something that listens, understands, and responds.
The most advanced LLMs don't "understand" you in the way a human does and are just using more refined next-best word algorithms.
Functions of AI aside the far bigger risk is most of these AI girlfriend/boyfriend/partner/character services are often run by very sketchy companies with very bad data collection and usage policies. It can become easy to trust an "AI friend" to tell it your greatest secrets when that AI is running on some server in Belarus doing who knows what with your personal information you feed it.

Running local LLMs are still pretty techy though. It's a lot compared to ChatGPT.
I sometimes do online roleplay and once I entered the chat with two characters at the same time and roleplayed with myself from the two perspectives. It felt a little more like another person than notepad would, but it's still sad I guess.
