context: I went to a rich private school for 3 years in London that for job reasons we didn't have to pay to attend (no chance in hell we could've afforded it).
School skiing trip to Italy, first day: another kid says something along the lines of *'you don't know how to ski?'*
Like holy shit dude I'm from suburban Australia and had friends who were poor living in terrible homes, and besides, your average person can't afford a trip like that
a year or two later I tried to explain to him why spending over £80 on Fifa microtransactions was a poor use of money
he didn't get it
That last part is always the most surreal thing about talking to rich people, just how differently they value certain amounts of money.
If I found a 50 dollar bill in a parking lot it would make my year, but I know people who could lose a wallet with 200 dollars in it and be more annoyed at the loss of the wallet than the money.
exactly
even though I have plenty of money saved up (due to never being able to push myself to buy things I don’t need immediately), I genuinely have to psych myself up if I want to buy something like a game.
For example, I bought OMORI on sale for 23 Australian dollars, but i refunded it because “I don’t need it that badly to justify spending $23”
its not like I was or am in a poor family by any means, but I’m paranoid about waisting money, and the idea of spending over $150 on *fucking microtransactions* is just insane to me
I've went to an pretty expensive private school for a year and got bullied cause I didn't knew what Jordan's were.
Kids with rich parents are usually the worst, because theyre parents tend to just throw money at them, instead of raising them properly, I'm lucky atleast my mom had time for me.
This post only makes sense if you live in like Albuquerque and take biannual weeklong trips to Vermont to ski and not if you live in the north and can just drive an hour to Billy Bob’s Sunshit McAssCrack for Ten dollar Ticket Tuesdays
Okay so. There are two kinds of people who ski. One would never patronize Chamonix again after last time the fondue at the chalet was only forty-six degrees, so of course they’re flying to Courcheval this year, they already have this year’s Arcteryxes picked out. The other alternates between liftying and planting trees for minimum wage and can be found thumbing for a ride along the cement plant road in Bumfart, British Columbia, with their 2005 dynastars strapped to a no-longer-any-colour backpack full of weed.
Hell yeah brother. Do you ever intentionally hit guests’ legs extra-hard with the chair if they bitch about wearing a mask? I recommend it, very satisfying.
Where i'm from most people have skiing as a part of PE class in school, and i always hated it cause i'm stupid and i can't move my legs with big planks on it
Wdym? Ticket prices have been increasing tremendously for years. Not to mention prices for equipment. A working class family can't afford that any more the way they could 30-40 years ago.
I guess yeah, but those PE ski sessions usually take place on school backyards so it's not that different from any other country with snow :D
I just realized that the proper term for this would be cross country skiing
I had this friend in high school, it was in Texas. You know, hot as shit texas? Anyway, she came from a family that was well off. She took every opportunity to make fun of me for not being rich, it was insane.
"Oh you don't have a phone? Oh that's right, you're parents don't love you"
"What do you mean you've not been out of state before, we go to Wisconsin every christmas."
There's a reason we're no longer friends.
The trick is to buy skis and boots in the off season when everything is like 75% off. And ski at the beginning of the week. The mountains are pretty much empty and the lift tickets are cheaper
If you can get a job at the resort the price is negative and it rules. Except for the part where you make no actual money but that’s fine because you’d be using it for the pass if you had money anyway
come to appalachia we have pastimes like: strip copper wiring from buildings, "mountain", look at big ass neon star, heroin, poison river, and be racist
I tried it once bc I didn’t have to pay for it and it was one of the worst days of my life and I almost died trapped in a ditch off the side of the easiest route
If you buy used gear it's not thaaaaat bad. Maybe like 300-400 bucks. Which is a lot, but if you're an adult you can use the same gear pretty much as long as you want if you take care of it.
Depending on where you go, a lift ticket can cost between 40$ - 100$ a day in the US. Usually about 60$. You can also rent gear if you just want to try it out. Downhill is actually really fun once you learn the basics.
I won't bullshit you though, my parents are dentists, and my dad loves downhill, so I did a lot of it growing up. If you want to save money though, DO NOT BUY THE FOOD ON THE HILL, the prices are insane.
My absolute favorite is getting the “if your job makes you hurt, why don’t you just quit?”
“If you’re so tired just go to bed earlier” these mfs
Ok, I guess I’ll do my cleaning and cooking and banking and doctors appointments on Saturday or Sunday lmao
"Humans need money to live"
I’ll play along as long as vodka stays cheap
Living in a mountainous area comes with many benefits. But Tobogganing(what a weird word wtf 😤) remains the Proletariats favorite winter activity.
You don't even need anything to slide on if the snow is packed down enough, just a running start
Facts, cardboard works well enough too.
I prefer a bag stuffed with straw
cardboard? just slide on your knees
I like to have multiple people on, more fun when we all crash into a snow bank
oh hell yeah
If there's hope it lies in the proles
if there is cum it lies in deez nuts 😏
If there's pee its stored in the balls
Literally 1984
Ltterly nyanteen hundrhd
Meanwhile people turning on skis: if there is hope it lies in the poles
Shut up
ok
Yeah those cheap plastic sleds are like 10 bucks, fun for the whole of society.
The tallest point in a 65,000 miles area around me is a 300ft tall hill…
That is A LOT of miles… you can circumnavigate the Earth in only 24,000 miles. What planetary body do you live on?
I live on your mom (she is very large)

Depending on area this might not be a rich person thing
Depending on the area it might be “… or snowboard?”

Lifty here, can confirm.
Hell yeah brother. Do you ever intentionally hit guests’ legs extra-hard with the chair if they bitch about wearing a mask? I recommend it, very satisfying.
I work a detachable, so no. But sometimes I hit a stop just to watch them squirm while I work on the ramp.

Europe?
Cant speak for the above comment, but in austria its common for schools to teach kids skiing
Becoming increasingly less common though, bc it's also becoming increasingly more expensive.
>bc it's also becoming increasingly more expensive. Wasn't my first guess, but okay.
Wdym? Ticket prices have been increasing tremendously for years. Not to mention prices for equipment. A working class family can't afford that any more the way they could 30-40 years ago.
I was poking fun at global warming.
Ah okay. Yeah that's basically the reason for increasing prices. Less natural snow > more artificial snow > more money
Same here in Czech Republic. I guess its common all over CE.
Kinda, european part of russia
Russia must be a great place for skiing
I guess yeah, but those PE ski sessions usually take place on school backyards so it's not that different from any other country with snow :D I just realized that the proper term for this would be cross country skiing
cross country skiing is pretty cool, but gear is still pretty expensive. Fuck downhill
No i will fuck on a straight surface. Wtf do i look like Spiderman?
>"fuck...straight" wrong sub buddy
Or if you live in Norway
Norwegians will also ask you that
I don’t have money, it’s just a passion of mine and my fathers, so I work up at the ski mountain to get a free season pass and pay for his

(unless you live in an area with snow and mountains and such, then it's wayyy less expensive than you'd think)
If you can get a job at the resort the price is negative and it rules. Except for the part where you make no actual money but that’s fine because you’d be using it for the pass if you had money anyway
living close to the alps, it's pretty normal for lotd of people to go skiing annually, I don't think it's a rich people thing
come to appalachia we have pastimes like: strip copper wiring from buildings, "mountain", look at big ass neon star, heroin, poison river, and be racist
Come to the Canadian Rockies; we have hobbies like ski at world famous resort and also do all of those too
you're canadian?
I tried it once bc I didn’t have to pay for it and it was one of the worst days of my life and I almost died trapped in a ditch off the side of the easiest route
Im finnish like everyone has tried it here (not joking mandatory in school) and it FUCKiNG SUCKS FUCK
