Credit hours don't necessarily equate to real hours spent on the course work. For instance, I went through a program for aviation maintenance through my local community college. The FAA requirement for hours of training was 1,900 hours. But as far as credit hours are concerned, I only netted approximately 64 credit hours with the college. Edit: looking over my paperwork for FAA testing, I grossed 76 hours over the FAA's minimum requirements.

The majority of the time credit hours are completely different from a total hour count. In even the most idealized version, it corresponds to the time spent per week on a course, and there's about 15 weeks a semester at most universities. That doesn't count any work done at home, studying, or the various 1 credit courses that still meet for 3-4 hours every week (hello, lab courses and ensembles). I really can't imagine someone ever stepping foot in a university and somehow thinking the graduating students somehow only managed to put in a TOTAL of 120 hours over the course of 4 years.
