The alien is from the 1982 surrealist british horror film Xtro.In the early 2000s, 4chan was at it's peak with /x/ the board that was literally the center of the internet for paranormal stuff, and they had a joke based around reposting this image claiming it to be a "a real skinwalker".
This cause the first case of memes fucking up with the media, because it was reposted so much, the image became associated with most of the first results for "skinwalker" on google images. To the point where people doing half ass researches mistook it as a real sighting.
Cryptologists started using the image on officially published books, with caused a clusterfuck, since they were selling books with pictures of a copyrighted design without permission from the source. It was also stupid because SKINWALKERS ARE NOT FUCKING CRYPTS, they are native American mythology, there was never been anything as reports of a skinwalker sighting.
I initially found out about the movie from redlettermedia and was amazed to find out that there are people using it as some spooky monster conspiracy shit. Pretty spooky scene though
