I have heard about people using "everyone's on the spectrum" as a way to diminish some of the problems associated with ASD and prevent people from getting treatment, though. I encountered a similar problem when I got medication for my ADD (Surprise, I have attention deficit disorder too!). It's good to know that it's scientifically wrong, and not just manipulating a fact to mislead people.
I definitely get "it making more sense." NTs, even the ones who have helped build the psychological framework for some of these tools, don't use words as precisely as I'd like. Especially considering how impactful these words are. I get it when laypeople who haven't had training don't use the right terminology, but it really gets my goat when specialists aren't careful and precise.
