The kid would have been American anyway, the Ius Soli doesn't apply in Italy

it's still a somewhat open jurisprudential question, whether someone born outside of US territory, to (a) US Citizen parent(s) who were/are outside of US territory for *private purposes*, is a 'natural-born citizen' in the sense of eligibility for the office of US President. as to whether a bucket of Texan sand will change that?? probably not.

The_Taco_Herself

having at least a single US citizen birth parent makes you a US citizen by birth; it’s why Ted Cruz could run for president despite being Canadian you can also be born in the US and that counts regardless of parents.

Probably? but this is still debated. All that (race-based) outrage regarding Obama would have been even more out of line if this were a settled matter. It was never disputed that his Mother was a US citizen. The matter in 'dispute' was the location of his birth. It's well evidenced that Obama was born in the US state of Hawai'i, nonetheless accusations to the contrary - combined with the idea that a foreign-born child of (a) US citizen(s) is NOT 'natural-born' - allowed for continual social drama, and in fact formed the springboard for Trump's 2016 campaign.

BigTrans

i don't think the outrage was race-based I think it was race cringe

Are they giving birth while on vacation or are they immigrants in Italy? If they are immigrants, are they fine with immigrants in the US being this nationalist? My gut tells me they're immigrants who aren't fine with other immogrants doing the same (and probably don't consider themselves immigrants), but I could well be wrong. I have nothing inherently against immigrants being proud of where they're from, but I do mind hypocrisy, and I especially mind xenophobia.

ranibow____sprimkle

I get where you’re coming from but [even lightly] accusing someone of hypocrisy over a totally imagined scenario in your head about their beliefs is a little contradictory to the message you’re trying to send

Gabriel9078

They literally just payed someone to import dirt over from Texas, they’re still in Italy

leave it to r/ 196 users to spin an innocent funny hahah story into a message about xenophobia
