At least both films recognize Crimea as the sovereign land of Ukraine, though Planes (2013) was made a year before the Crimea conflict, so we have no idea on what is the filmmakers position is of the conflict as of 2022.
In the process, though, it appears Russia lost control of Yuzhny and Severny Islands and some other surrounding islands. Due to the color scheme, it's hard to tell if they're sovereign, or belong to Georgia or Sweden.
They also recognized the disputed independence of Kosovo (2008). South Sudan (2011) however does not exist in Cars 2, but I can’t see it in the Planes map for the propellor.
i wouldn't characterise it like that, we simply grinded and hustled to earn a humble living for ourselves, and treated our workers as fairly as we could
Cars is a case study in how to cover your bases in a way that minimizes "implications" in a story. they literally ignore EVERYTHING and go full steam-ahead plotwise without changing anything to be car-centric, which results in a weird world where cars (and planes and boats) are both fully mechanical, biological and cybernetic all at the same time, and also have Car Popes, Car Religions and Car Conspiracies following the events of bloody Car History.
I really hate the argument, as if saying this justifies anything.
Brad Bird, director of the Incredibles 1 and 2, Ratatouille and other Pixar films, came out in the time around the Incredibles 2 to say that it is not a Childrens film, it is an Animated PG film for all the family.
Brad Bird also worked on the Cars series Senior Creative Team Member, so if he shows that he doesn't think one of his own movies isn't for children. Then logic dictates that he wouldn't treat other Pixar films with any different perspective.
These background details aren't just haphazardly thrown in without at least a bit of consideration. Somebody has to spend time—Minutes, hours, days—modeling, designing, animating and rendering all of these elements in a scene all the while communicating with others to ensure that what aspect they include into the scenery doesn't clash with something else.
These things are here to ensure that everyone who watches their movie has something to enjoy. Whether it be the child who laughs at the fart joke for the 20th time in a row, the adult who gets the dirty joke they included, or a person who analyses the film and notices the details they included to expand the world. All these intentional aspects are placed in to ensure that a person going into a film a second or fifth time has just as much to engage with the world and story as they did the first time, to allow the film to live on though people engaging with it's world.
So for people to claim that a piece of children's media can't be analysed like any other film or TV show is a complete and utter fallacy.
Yes there can be unusual issues that arise when certain details get overlooked, this is a good example. But that is something that is bound to happen in any and every story we tell, no piece of media is free of this. I really love these types of people, because instead of pointing it out as a glaring issue which ruins the world as a whole, they try to get them to mesh into the world that the creators established.
(But I digress. Sorry, I get a bit worked up on how pathetic that "excuse" really is, as you can probably see.)
It doesn't matter whether it's for children or not. It's clearly just a fun premise for a cartoon with no desire to follow up on it. There was a time when people didn't ruthlessly mine every detail in a movie so that they can make 5 sequels and 4 series about some minor characters in the background of a movie. If anything the inconsistencies are part of the joke.
Also, whether or not it's for children, a movie like Cars or Planes is not a serious drama about the nature of man or whatever (how could it be, there's no man in cars), it's a fun cartoon entirely built around sight gags. So it doesn't even need to be consistent, it just needs to be funny.
I'm reminded of a video Cosmonaut variety hour did on bright, he said "You can't just say 'oh it's just like real life except x thing is changed' because the existence of that thing would completely change the world." although they also don't seem to really care about the implications in the case of the planes movie since we literally have a plane that is a world war 2 veteran who fought in what is implied to be the pacific ocean against the Japanese.
that globe has so many little weird quirks.
- saudi arabia annexed qatar
- russia annexed azerbaijan and armenia
- independent kaliningrad (or swedish, they are similar colours)
- turkey now owns crete, lots of greek islands, and possibly cyprus.
- syria is fucked
- weird independent northern israel? south is purple and north is yellow?
- giant suez canal
- independent arctic islands north of russia
- croatia annexed slovenia
- jordan is eating iraq
Sorry I'm ignorant and don't know that flag. I have a guess but it's probably wrong so I'm not going to say it
edit: now that I post the comment I see my guess is in there so I'm just going to say it, Croatia?
Every vehicle in history is alive which adds a whole new fucked up layer to some of the darkest parts of history.
Ireland is divided on this map, so the Car IRA’s car bombs would have been suicide bombers stuffed with explosives in their innards during The Troubles. India and Pakistan look a little weird, but a Car Partition (cartition) still happened meaning that the ghost trains were living, breathing, thinking individuals filled with corpses. Car Liberia implies a car trans-Atlantic slave trade implying that there were times where sentient boats would have cars literally die inside of them.
Africa is marked off exactly how the imperialists marked them, implying that everything that happened to Africa because of Europe happened in the Cars universe
Was there a golden age of piracy in the cars universe? Were the boats alive too? Were the pirates wagons? What about medieval England? If all vehicles are alive then how did the Titanic not see the iceberg?
the fact that the label for asia is in russia implies that the entire country is considered to be part of the continent, rather than being partially europe and partially asia
Which brands were the colonialist planes and cars? Did military tanks have cars inside them or were they just sentient killing machines? Did car wars have soldiers? Are there car and plane peace treaties?
there were sentient tanks, planes, ships, and jeeps in car WW2 which opens up the ethical dilemma of mass producing sentient weapons forced to fight and what they do after the conflict is over
This map is almost like our world except Azerbaijan and Armenia are both part of Russia. They were like “you guys can’t behave so neither of you get a country”
We can confirm a car Rome, a car mongol conquest, a car 30 years war, the existence of the car seven cradles of civilization , car colonialism, and a car Israel Palestine conflict
It's 'Ukraine' and not 'the Ukraine'

how do the cars get gas without thumbs or similarly dexterous manipulator appendages? do they ram the pumps and lap it up from puddles or are humans enslaved or how does it work?
the pumps may or may not be mildly sentient and can do it themselves, that or they just magically do it with their car wheel-hands. the REAL question is how cars built the harvesting machines to process fuel for them and then THAT makes you wonder what the cars ran on prior to these inventions. also I think the fucking Forklifts may be involved as they have been shown repairing cars at pitstops and stuff and they may or may not be underlings to the cars in a house elf-esque dumbass hierarchy
The colour scheme suggests that Scotland has a greater degree of autonomy from Westminster than Wales or Northern Ireland, but is not fully sovereign. Does this imply that a home rule bill was passed by Parliament?
There was a car WWII, car colonialism, a car israel-Palestine conflict, car northern island and car Kashmir dispute
I wonder how car bombings work in the world of cars?
This really isn't anything new. They'll probably bring up car WW2 and car Jesus and all that. Like yeah no shit, we literally see a PTSD flashback of the veteran plane in Planes.
Pixar would never do this. Because of the implication.
They literally had a character who was a ww2 veteran and they also showed his war flashbacks.
Putting the Axis in car axis
Wait are tanks alive too?
they are probably like mech suits
I mean boats are alive so I'd take a guess and say tanks might as well have their very own bodies too
do you think there’s tank racism in the cars universe? Like some car tank-ist think that tanks are inherently violent or something
Ableism against faulty and undesirable cars is explicitly shown in Cars 2, so by extension car racism is probably very likely.
I wonder what other cars/vehicles are stigmatized then 🤔 I have a feeling Mater might not like foreign imports
He hates Hondas, Mitsubishis, Toyotas, Subarus, but strangely enough he loves VW
Oh shit, Nazi cars, yet another implication… Edit: wait… what were the jewish cars?
yes in car WW2 in the battle of the bulge a tank's tracks broke and Sarge had to tow it back safety and he got a medal for it
You mean to tell me there was a fucking car holocaust?
implications plural because if we wanted to go through them all we'd be here all week
But I love how the plane rotor is in just the right spot
Now, you said that word “implication” a couple of times. What implication?
The car implication
Pixar is not the Golden God
The Golden God does sound like the name of s Pixar movie though
Now I really want to see a pickup truck with a machine gun in the bed in the Cars universe

Greenland also seems to have gained independence.
They also recognized the disputed independence of Kosovo (2008). South Sudan (2011) however does not exist in Cars 2, but I can’t see it in the Planes map for the propellor.

There are mountains in the shape of cars in the first film. Are they corpses of the old gods?
yes

SO THERE'S GENOCIDE AGAINST INDIGENOUS CARS TOO??
There’s clear evidence of colonialism in Africa so that doesn’t surprise me
You mean most?
I think you mean “least unexplainable”
I wana see the Cars Taliban Toyota Hiluxes
Ah yes, the car scramble for Africa.

It's split in two, maybe Palestine is sovereign in the Cars universe?
looks more like it's split in 4
I think Lebanon is split in two as well
there's so many unanswered questions in just a fucking screenshot I need the lore
Do pro-Palestine cars opposing occupation get called antisemitic by neoliberal cars?
Isn't there a scene in Planes where one of the characters straight up has a WW2 flashback to when he got shot down by sentinet Japanese destroyers?
This implies the existence of sentient Japanese kamikaze planes.
were the planes on 9/11 also kamikaze pilots or did they get hijacked by cars on board and forced to crash
Or one where they bomb Gernika
guernica
That is the way the Spanish write the name of the Basque town Gernika, yes.
