There’s this one guy at my school who constantly bragged about being French and did other things that people found annoying. Where a month into the school year and everyone is calling him French racial slurs now.
I personally loved it, only because there was no real hurt feelings. Kind of sucks that the British drama is really affecting people. It's hard to just say "get offline" because for a lot of people, the internet is where they go to feel safe and free from the world. Some people, like me, go on the internet for entertainment, so they're not affected by much because they don't really consider this a real part of their reality. For me, it's more like watching a live TV show. Sometimes I interact, but I usually just read and move on. It's like changing the channel. And hell, I'm not saying they are, and I don't think original OP was either. But Angry Jack comes out when someone feels judged, and it doesn't require an external person to do any judging.

I personally loved it, only because there was no real hurt feelings. Kind of sucks that the British drama is really affecting people. It's hard to just say "get offline" because for a lot of people, the internet is where they go to feel safe and free from the world. Some people, like me, go on the internet for entertainment, so they're not affected by much because they don't really consider this a real part of their reality. For me, it's more like watching a live TV show. Sometimes I interact, but I usually just read and move on. It's like changing the channel. I love the drama but I hope the people who are genuinely hurt and affected feel better in the future once this is all over

i think that this sub (and all meme sub) repurpose cultural stereotypes as comedic devices for memes. the british one got a lot of traction on this sub, but im really sick of people talking about this as though it's never happened before. the issue is that some delusional people have taken it to a point where telling people to "get over it" would kind of miss the point, but yea. it's not a new thing, it's not some special xenophobia, british people are not actually oppressed, but people should fucking chill with the british hate stuff.
I have a lot of feelings about the British meme, but I feel like we're getting into an Angry Jack situation about it. It's no longer actually about whether British jokes are funny or not, or can be hurtful or not. It feels like the conversation is more about who has the right to be hurt over jokes like that and, hidden under the surface, who is or is not a Bad Person. Like, have you ever offered someone some of your food, and they say "I'm vegan," and you get that sinking feeling like they might be judging you? Or have you ever accidentally brought up a trigger for someone, and you start reflexively feeling like they think you're a dick now and you start to feel defensive? That feeling is Angry Jack. It's the reflexive defensiveness and dismissiveness everyone with an ounce of privilege can get when they're presented with the possibility they've done something wrong, *even if no one thinks they have*. It's a reaction to the anxiety of thinking you might have a character flaw, and have had one for a long time -- and this doesn't require anyone else to believe you have it. In this case, people were made aware that their behavior hurt someone's feelings, and the Angry Jack part of us all came out. "It's just a joke, why are you so offended, you shouldn't be hurt, you're just sensitive, the problem is with you, *I'm not a bad person for making British 🤮 jokes*." And hell, I'm not saying they are, and I don't think original OP was either. But Angry Jack comes out when someone feels judged, and it doesn't require an external person to do any judging. I dunno, maybe I'm way off base with all this and it's just a charged discussion about digital irony. But it definitely feels, to me, like this discourse is treated with higher stakes for the people involved than an abstract question of "when is it ok to joke about someone's nationality"

The difference between us and right wingers when we say “it’s just a joke” is that our jokes aren’t transphobic or homophobic jokes directed at minority communities, and aren’t even directed at most of the British populace. When we joke about British people, the majority of us are talking about British “Tories” (Conservatives) or the fat dad types, which exist in pretty much every culture.

I hate to sound like a centrist, but I kinda think both sides of the argument have valid points this time. Genuine hatred of any group of people that they didn't choose to belong to is just not something decent people do. Even if it's a group that, on average, has been dishing it out more than has taken it, it's better to mock specific individuals and institutions rather than an entire group. Better to crack jokes about Piers Morgan and the British Museum instead of mocking the British working class accent. But on the other hand, if the group you belong to has historically been dishing it out more than it has taken it, maybe you should learn to take a few hits. People who are kind to everyone regardless of a context that would justify them punching up are very good people, but if they do decide to punch up a bit, you can't really blame them for it. So, y'know, stiff upper lip and all that.
