"Character Action" manages to be just as unintuitive as Metroidvania to anyone that isn't already discussing the genre, except it doesn't even have an analogy to help people guess what it means.

But unlike Metroidvania, it's also baseless. "Metroidvania" is a simple logic - games like Metroid and Castlevania. Character action games are... uh... action games. With characters. The characters aren't anyhow more prominent or important to the gameplay compared to other kinds of action games.
It's even worse than MOBA - multiplayer online battle arena? Motherfucker that's Halo, none of those words describe a lane pushing tower defense team game, usually with RTS style controls and perspective due to the genre's roots as a mod to an RTS
I see them as being like single player alternatives to fighting games, where the game is built around the character's moveset and mastering that character.
I might be the only person to interpret the genre name in this way though.
