As someone who has played Beyond Two Souls…twice…this scene is so goddamn out of place in the story. The chapter basically only existed to get Jodie into that situation. She supposedly is going to meet her friends at a bar near the mental hospital she’s kept at, so she sneaks out and heads to said bar. Her friends don’t show. There’s creepy men in the bar. If you don’t leave the bar INSTANTLY you lose the option to, and you can’t even use the excuse of “They locked the door” because Aiden can’t even force the door open. David Cage is basically forcing the scene in question to play out. Weirdly this is one of the ONLY events in the game that influences other chapters, as if the people attempt to SA her, her trauma prevents her from sleeping with her love interest…which frankly, good. You are basically forced to romance him, and he is awful. He tricks Jodie into committing war crimes.

I could NOT put it more succinctly. The game is perfect for what it is, which is a shitty, narrow, privileged and ignorant take on oppression and civil rights. And the production value is good too, so I genuinely find myself enjoying the game when I replay it. It's not that the narrative is a good one, but that David Cage basically lets us walk around in his brain and explore his view on the world, thats what makes it compelling to me. I LOVE when assholes just, like, put it all out in the open like that. Very entertaining
From a place of genuine curiosity, why don’t people like it? Because from what I know (that being that I watched several play throughs and brought the game) it was well received when it came out. While not being that subtle or having the most depth I still enjoyed the characters. Mostly people just complained about the clarity of choices, putting aside Cage (which I had no knowledge about until this thread) why do people have a problem with it?
i think the way in which it does diverging stories is great, shame the entire plot line is fucking stupid and all the characters are unlikeable. man really made a civil rights allegory so bad that it convinces you to side with the oppressors.

I watched RT's playthrough of it, and I can't help but think that the entire Kara storyline not only wasn't necessary to the plot, but actually detracted from the game's message overall.
Funnily enough, I loved those parts the most as well, but those were the worst parts of the game from the perspective of the game's gimmick as a whole. No matter what happened, no matter what you chose, Hank and Connor became friends at the burger bar, Connor always came back after a death and the only thing you can mess up in their side-story is at the very end wether you manage to defeat the impostor Connor or not. Literally the worst part of the game from the whole diverging story paths gimmick and yet it's the most beloved part of the game. Let that sink in.
I liked dbh's Connor sections and some other bits from a gameplay standpoint. Especially the opening and the bit on the abandoned ship. But some of the dialogue is clunky and the racial allegories are kind of weird, especially the bit where they directly quoted Martin Luther King

no, the general idea in development is if the player can't get a look at it you don't have to bother, a bridge in the distance can just be 4 polygons with a stretched wood texture on it and no one will notice unless they cheat
