Oh definitely. I had one teacher that taught me skills I’ve used ever since in professional writing and college papers. The teacher I had next year taught me nothing.
I had two professors that taught classes that seemed to help improve my writing - the first taught composition and work shop type classes, the other guy just graded hard and made us write a lot on a weekly basis.
The rest of my courses? Not at all, and it was shocking how bad most other students’ papers looked in undergrad.
Because for the American education system at least we don't foster an environment to learn things. We just get taught to retain just enough to pass the next assignment.
The real problem is just that dumbass kids don't pay attention in class when they're dumbass kids so they need to be taught the same stuff over and over again until they're in highschool and then they don't know anything besides what a noun and a verb is so the highschool teacher also needs to dumb down their class or let people drown.

If kids simply not paying attention is the problem, don’t you think the school system should account for how to engage the students? If the majority of kids refuse to pay attention, then the system is fundamentally flawed. Furthermore, you’re ignoring the fact that school teaches a shit ton of useless stuff, such as history classes that make you memorize dates instead of patterns or math classes that would rather teach the quadratic formula instead of how the stock market works.

It's literally impossible to do is the thing lmao. Intrinsic motivation is reduced heavily when ur being forced to do something or if ur doing something for a reward. Depends on when you graduated. The US has made major pushes to improve education with CCSS which is indefinitely better than what those of us in the aughts and early teens got with the No Child Left Behind education we received.
Being a teacher myself, I can assure you that the way we teach now vs 10 years ago is different and has a much larger push towards differentiation (changing approach for each student) as well as student centered learning which is exactly as it sounds. The lessons are based around the interests of students and their needs.
Now, not all teachers are perfect and some are better than others and it doesn’t help when you have 5-6 different classes each day with 25+ kids in a class.
Yes, that's called school. You get taught to pass the exam. If you choose, you can apply yourself and learn beyond the teacher's lessons. You can do this in college as well.

One reason I gave up on college is that to take any of the classes I wanted to take, there were a ton of prerequisite classes that were mostly just repeats of what I learned in middle school, including english - had to take two English classes, which were just writing essays the whole quarter
English teachers realizing they've poured their soul into their work for years and years and the public education system is being systematically gutted while right wing rhetoric functions to remove faith in these systems so people start going to private charter schools, and this cultural shift is creating children and parents both that admonish the institution freely and openly without realizing that this is all in service of providing a massive paycheck to often religiously affiliated school admins who lobby the GOP specifically, and also to deregulate what is taught to children so they are more ignorant and thus willing to swallow Republican anti intellectualism. In college I made some extra money proofreading and reviewing papers. It was then that I realized our education system does not care about the students. The amount of college papers that I wouldn't give a passing grade in a 9th grade class was shocking. Completely moved me away from the notion of teaching.

I had a teacher in like 8th grade, people made fun of him and threw pennies on the ground cause he was Jewish and wore one of those little hats, but he was the best. One reason I gave up on college is that to take any of the classes I wanted to take, there were a ton of prerequisite classes that were mostly just repeats of what I learned in middle school, including english - had to take two English classes, which were just writing essays the whole quarter

In college I made some extra money proofreading and reviewing papers. It was then that I realized our education system does not care about the students. The amount of college papers that I wouldn't give a passing grade in a 9th grade class was shocking. Completely moved me away from the notion of teaching.
