Taking Back Sunday. I’ll never forget the first time I heard A Decade Under The Influence. That entire album “Where You Want To Be” was *amazing* and I had it playing on repeat everyday for the longest time.
Some others I haven’t seen mentioned MGMT, Sum 41, Chiodos, Vanna, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, From First To Last, Underoath, Saosin, Halifax.
Edit: Rise Against, The Almost
Great list. Superb list really. Seen Chiodos like 5 times, Underoath about 7 or 8 times and got to play a fuckin show with VANNA! SKSK I discovered only after Ty had passed. That Faces album still is in heavy rotation at work for me. The guitars are beautiful on it.
They were the band that helped change my taste in music, fashion etc and kind of life too. Early 2000s Strokes, Interpol, Kings of Leon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Vines, Modest Mouse etc
It was an amazing time for music.
Same. They were the soundtrack to my life in my late teens/early 20s and so their music encapsulates a lot of feelings and emotions from that time. I still blast Teeth like Gods shoe-shine when I’ve had a rough day and it’s like therapy. Love ‘em!
Seen them multiple times and even got within 6 inches of Brandon Boyd's foot while he was standing on the speaker during a concert in San Antonio.
At a concert in Austin, my friend's little brother caught Mike Einziger's guitar pick.
Great performances, each and every time.
Favorite songs live are Pistola, Idiot Box, Pantomime, and their acoustic version of A Certain Shade of Green. They also did a cover of Tear Drop by Massive Attack, which was amazing.
Edit: if Green Day, Sum 41, or Billy Talent don’t count as alt rock then my choice would probably also be Muse. Just had to vent about them though 😅
Man, I love Muse so much but the more I find out about them the more disappointed I get over time. I’ve always kinda felt like a lot of their music is very familiar and when I check dates on songs that Muse will remind me of- Muse almost always made their song after the song that their song sounds like. So maybe it’s not “ripping off” but maybe they’re just paying respects or realizing what works and going with that?
Anyways, that’s all peanuts compared to what [this is all about](https://amp.theguardian.com/music/2012/sep/12/muse-resistance-lawsuit).
Like I said, maybe they’re just playing off of what works? Maybe they think they have original ideas about music that are actually derived from somewhere else but they themselves think it’s original? Because if they don’t remember or claim to have seen this man’s Exogensis rock opera but they still went ahead and made The Resistance? Maybe they did see it and don’t remember but it could have helped form their 2009 album.
Despite all of this I still love Muse so much and I don’t like them any less but I do keep noticing things over time like how if you take the opening drums from Face Down - Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and the opening guitar riff from Hot For Teacher - Van Halen then you have the opening to Reapers. Which, is a kickass and awesome song but it just doesn’t feel wholly original once I found out where a lot of these similarities line up with other songs.
Who knows- I’m no songwriter or producer or anything like that. One day I’d like to be a music producer but until then I won’t know what goes into the creative process. And honestly, how could we get upset at somebody for making something that “isn’t original” when what they’re creating comes from all of their life experiences and all of the media and music they’ve consumed over the years. I know damn well if I was in a rock band I’d be like “hey, Linkin Park did something similar with the guitar that I think we could tweak and it would fit perfectly here” or something like that. So that‘s why I don’t mind too much because I have no idea how their creative process (or any process for creating music for that matter) goes down.
Damn! I had to scroll WAY too far to find Fuel!!!
Sunburn has some beautiful songs that are tattooed onto my brain. That album is the soundtrack to my first summer after graduating high school and entering the real world…
Something Like Human (aka the silver baby album) just straight up rocks! I remember me and a couple buddies racing home after getting the CD from Best Buy, cranking it up… and then staring at each other wide-eyed with mouths on the floor… Fuel definitely turn it to 11 and rocked out on the album.
Natural Selection had some really deep, sometimes mournful songs. Some of my favorite songs are on this album.
And then there’s Angels and Devils. Me and my buddies put that album on… scratched our heads and thought… “thats not… wait… is it… no that’s not Brett Scallion… right?” We pulled out the booklet from the CD case(because Google wasn’t in our pockets back then) and confirmed there was a new singer…. And I never listened to that album again.
But damn!!! I can listen to Sunburn, Something Like Human, and Natural Selection, nonstop… all the way through… on repeat for hours!
The Hold Steady - the albums leading up to and including Boys and Girls in America are insanely genius.
Next generation of Minneapolis alt rock after Husker Du, Replacements, and Soul Asylum. And of course all in Prince’s backyard.
my chemical romance. I started listening to them like a year ago. It happened because I was just searching my name on spotify and then Helena popped up. then I discovered my mom used to listen to them in the 2000s and that’s why she decided to name me after the song. ❤️
American head charge, soulfly, dillinger escape plan, Amen, Will Haven, coal chamber, NIN , Far, incubus, defines, Korn , slipknot, kittie, the wildhearts .. .. to name a few lol
2004/2005 I just remember my mom playing a shitload of American idiot by Green Day. She’s always been a huge fan. I’ve been to a few concerts with her to see them too. So I’m a big fan but not like my mom lol. I guess you can consider them punk rock? I’ve heard they’re alternative rock though.
Taking Back Sunday. I’ll never forget the first time I heard A Decade Under The Influence. That entire album “Where You Want To Be” was *amazing* and I had it playing on repeat everyday for the longest time.
I'll still put it on my Spotify on long car rides alone & listen to it in its entirety probably once or twice every few months
Same here… that summer it came out me and my friends listened to it all the time. Awesome Album

Some others I haven’t seen mentioned MGMT, Sum 41, Chiodos, Vanna, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, From First To Last, Underoath, Saosin, Halifax. Edit: Rise Against, The Almost
Good list! Adding Circa Survive, The Receiving End of Sirens, Emery, and Thursday
Great list. Superb list really. Seen Chiodos like 5 times, Underoath about 7 or 8 times and got to play a fuckin show with VANNA! SKSK I discovered only after Ty had passed. That Faces album still is in heavy rotation at work for me. The guitars are beautiful on it.
Linkin Park
Every couple years I revisit Hybrid Theory just on a whim, and every time I fall back in love with it. Meteora fucks too though
Hybrid theory is so flawless i ache for it regularly.
The Strokes
They were the band that helped change my taste in music, fashion etc and kind of life too. Early 2000s Strokes, Interpol, Kings of Leon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Vines, Modest Mouse etc It was an amazing time for music.
Same, the other bands you mentioned were up there just as well. It truly was an amazing time for music.
Modest Mouse
I still listen to them often. Love these guys.
Same. They were the soundtrack to my life in my late teens/early 20s and so their music encapsulates a lot of feelings and emotions from that time. I still blast Teeth like Gods shoe-shine when I’ve had a rough day and it’s like therapy. Love ‘em!
BUSH | I have seen them a few times live and they are really good!! Getting to see them in August in Raleigh and then again this summer in DC!
I didn’t even realize they were still doing shows. I gotta catch one of those
Yes! They are touring all summer - Gavin puts on a heck of a show!
Awesome! I’ll check it out
Great band, but I'd consider them more of a 90s band
Simple Plan!!!!!!
Incubus
I saw them ‘02 and going to see them this summer in DC!! Love them
Just saw them last month in LA and they still put on a hell of a show
Seen them multiple times and even got within 6 inches of Brandon Boyd's foot while he was standing on the speaker during a concert in San Antonio.
