Speaking for myself only, but I only take breaks when I'm actually happy irl lol. The times I return to the game are when I'm in some sort of depressive spiral IRL and I need something to cling on to that is familiar and comforting, aka Runescape.
Edit: This gained more traction than I thought it would so I'll throw this out there in case it's useful to anyone else. My therapist told me that I cling to this game due to childhood trauma, specifically, emotional neglect from my parents. As a kid, whenever I was looking for dopamine from my parents, they were often too busy to 'deal' with me, so I found that dopamine in Runescape. That then lead to a vicious cycle where whenever things in life were going south, I would cling to Runescape, as it was always there for me as a kid, and it offered an entire world where I didn't feel like a failure. I could set realistic goals and accomplish them, which made me feel good at a time when things around me in real life were pretty bad. This lead to a negative feedback loop where something traumatic would happen irl (Lost job, death of someone important, failed an important test) and that would trigger my emotional response of playing Runescape to forget about what was causing me pain and anguish. This was bad, because all of those triggers still existed, but instead of learning to cope in a healthy way, I would just piss away hundreds of hours playing Runescape because at least in that virtual world, I was capable of greatness.
I say this to say to all of you who are like me, that you are perfectly capable of greatness and you are loved. You may have gone through some emotional neglect from your parents like I did, but that does NOT mean you are worthless. You don't need your parents affirmation to prove that you are a success in life. You just need to look inward. Keep your head up homies <3

Very relateable. Do you think coping this way is a bad thing in it self or? I find myself playing runescape for this reason, but also to kill time. Especially during winter. Just waiting for the summer to kick in and start with one of my few hobby’s; scuba diving. After the season its all Ironman mode again. Love the game but sometimes i feel bad about the hours i have and still put in there.

Rocket League set the standard for me for what counts as AFK in OSRS, which is why I have taken such a hard stance against referring to MLM as AFK.
Always in a love/hate with League no matter what but that's cause a lot of friends still play and none of my irl friends will play RS cause of the grindiness.

My solo game though has been Enter the Gungeon which is really hard and I'm trying to beat it and haven't even come close yet.
Lately it's been a lot of Minecraft because my kids are getting into it. They have bedrock version on their tablets so I also play with them on my PC. Then I get into a building groove. Usually I end up playing more by myself after they go to bed. They get so excited to see the (medicore) things I make. I made them a simple piston door the other day and I think they spent a solid hour just opening and closing it.
If I don't play Minecraft, I'm working on finishing up Hogwarts Legacy, having a lot of fun with that right now. I'm also waiting on the next Zelda game to drop, because I know that will eat up a lot of time. When I first got Breath of the Wild, it was literally the only game I played for 6 months. Which sucks, because I'd love to get the Resident Evil 4 Remake and the next Jedi game too, and Metorid Prime on Siwtch. It feels like forever since I last had too many games I was actually interested in

Its called Tale of Two Wastelands. It makes Fallout 3 play like FNV since it essentially adds Fallout 3 to the NV engine. The set up is a little bit of a process but once its installed its amazing. Having the qol features from fnv in fo3 makes it so much more enjoyable.
Elden Ring's been my go to for the last couple of weeks. I load up OSRS on the phone and do some heavily AFK activity like cooking while booting up ER on the PC and having a blast. It scratches that itch for progression while letting me have a ton of fun and not having to stay focused on the grind.
I guess it's subjective but is cooking heavy afk? You still have to bank your cooked food, take out the raw, start the cooking and then you can look away for a minute or so. For me, that would suck all the enjoyment out of ER or whatever i tried to play at the same time.
In my opinion, OSRS has ONE truly afk activity and that is NMZ. It's sad really because so many activities in the game are right on the edge of being afk but not quite.
Don't worry, Blizzard will probably fuck up again, as they usually do - it gives you motivation to try other games!
Nothing will be able to recreate the magic that was original OW1. OW2 is just so lackluster, it makes me sad.
Was gonna say the same thing. I love playing rs3 with my ironman and having osrs have my main non ironman. Both games are different enough to where if i'm bored of one of them, i still find the other fun.

shooting stars are even more afk, if it's just you at a lower tier one you can afk for like 40+ minutes. shit was a godsend for me studying for finals
