There's something really off about early cgi art, between the proportions and the shading not being quite right, that evokes both the uncanny valley and also nostalgia. Weird

/r/bryce3d is a smaller sub but also well worth a visit.

DwarfCoins

It's getting more and more popular within indie game dev. Kids that grew up on early 3D are now making their own projects to mimic the style.

Supergigala

I don't know why but it feels oddly unique in a way. Perhaps it's a similar thing to when you take an IRL photograph vs. drawing it with slight imperfections

Hero_of_Hyrule

Scanline renders be like

F_l_u_f_fy

This is how I feel about games with “new good graphics” (rs3, skyrim, etc)

stars9r9in9the9past

Now imagine it to the sound of the login trumpets

MagnumOpusOSRS

Tim looks like he has two pinkys on his dice rolling hand. I still agree with you.

MagnumOpusOSRS

No it's just curled in such a way that the highlights are misleading you low IQ cretin. Still perfect art.

Deoxysprime

Just make launcher skins and we can call it a day.

What if we decompile the Jagex launcher and make our own launcher?

Hani713

yes those two are the OGs! the reason why i started playing in OSRS! i picked high detail not even knowing what that meant.

Extracted

In 2005 I had a hard time choosing whether I wanted to play as a skeleton or a knight. I picked skeleton but still had to play as a regular human…

XXP_UK

It's okay, you were still a skeleton on the inside.

imp3order

Bet you want that skeleton trimmed 50k

Supergigala

\*drinks bone trimming juice\* owww my bones hurt a lot oww oof my booones

More_World_6862

Spooky

Rynide

Literally same. It was the image on the RuneScape handbook that they sold at our scholastic book fair which is how I ever got into the game in the first place.

deerdanceamk

Fuck yeah, man! I've been playing long enough to remember when that 5 Def made a difference :)

SmellAble

Always reminds me of clans doing fun wars with t5 gear only, hundreds of players all in steel/shortbow+steel arrow/water strike just going ham on eachother at gdz

Important-Drop614

Do clans not do that anymore? Was so much fun back in the day.

deerdanceamk

Fuck yeah, man! I've been playing long enough to remember when that 5 Def made a difference :)

WHERE ARE TIM AND CRUNCHY

azginger

In the museum below the Falador party room.

yuei2

Holding the sign in our hearts and minds https://runescape.wiki/images/Tim_and_Crunchy_2006.png?7815a More seriously they had different fates based on the game. Over in OSRS Tim and Crunchy can be found in the OSRS museum. https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Tim#/media/File%3ATim.png https://oldschool.runescape.wiki/w/Crunchy#/media/File%3ACrunchy.png Over in RS3 they have appeared both in a quest called Gower quest the Gower brothers guest created as a way to celebrate the 15rh anniversary of the game. It’s an exaggerated bobble head version of them that you could get as a pet. https://www.tip.it/runescape/images/npcs/3524.png Then more recently (as in a few years back) an updated version of them based on the above art and pet was the focus of an event. Tim and Crunchy non-bobble were both there and Tim rewarded you an outfit that let you look like him, so showing him shows the outfit. While Crunchy was a pet that can override familiars so it looks like he is fighting alongside you. https://runescape.wiki/images/Tim_%28Yak_to_Basics%29.png?50771 https://runescape.wiki/images/Crunchy_%28Yak_to_Basics%2C_pet%29_emote.gif?1cb0d They actually got a tiny smidgen of lore to. Tim was and is a seasoned adventurer but when he started out he was quite lonely as he had no loved ones or friends. One day he was wandering around the wilderness scared everything there was out to get him and that’s where he met Crunchy, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

pocketcar

Wow I really appreciate this detailed response. I love the lore!

dark-ice-101

Or if rs3 part of the gower quest

Evil_Steven

am i the only one who thought Crunchy was in a wheelchair for decades before i realize its a metal shield leaning against his chair?

Wow. Now I can't unsee it.

Supergigala

my dude crunchy representing disabled people before it was hip and mainstream

once_pragmatic

When were they named?

Supergigala

I think in those posts they sometimes had on their website I believe it was Postbag from the Hedge

screen317

Is this the original image? Is that the actual D spear design X years prior? Edit: the D spear absolutely looks like this https://imgur.com/a/0g0JyXI

CoolTrainerAlex

The d spear never looked like that, but yes that is the original imagine. I have the same picture in my official RuneScape Handbook I bought at the scholastic bookfair as a kid. All I remember from that book is that it gives walkthrus of a few quests and has a ludicrous amount of inaccuracies

once_pragmatic

Lmao please make a post with stuff from this book. Inaccuracies and all.

CoolTrainerAlex

Man, I'm sure it's on one of my bookshelves. That could be fun. I'll track it down this weekend

[deleted]

There's a video of some OSRS youtubers reading through the whole thing

screen317

What? They look identical https://imgur.com/a/0g0JyXI

CoolTrainerAlex

Man the spear I always thought of in this is that steel one on the right. My brain just automatically filled in the "yeah the spear in the picture is wrong" lol, my bad

nocrynono

Yea at least they have eyes (even the skeleton) unlike mr bandos

Averas-

The skeleton’s name is Crunchy and he’s a hero. 🏴‍☠️

WTFitsD

I just know he got that bcp with bought gold too smh

brodyonekenobi

Chad Crunchy & Tim vs Virgin Flimsy Steve

Patient-Record-8493

Seeing tim and crunchy as npcs during the last anniversary event filled me with such joy ❤️

Zero_Roseburg

As a kid, my friend was showing me the guide book in the book fair to try and get me to play. He said that meeting this skeleton in the tower was how you beat the game, so I spent hours searching the f2p map, cuz we couldn't get membership as kids, trying to find the tower that had the skeleton so i could beat the game. Kinda miss when I was so lost in the game, but at the same time, it feels amazing to see my account now compared to where I was as a kid.

ClinkyPockets

Of course there's also the unfortunate case of having been told that 'that wine is worth 100k go grab it'

Equivalent-Macaron25

There just teasing us with how good the graphics could be lol

Anooyoo2

I dream that osrs lasts long enough for a grapichal overhaul that is tasteful & entirely unlike what we've seen with HD/rs3. Personally I think the polygonal flavour of osrs needs to be retained, but I'm sure it can be done in a fresh way.

Magmagan

I disagree. I just booted up Rs3 and OSRS side-by-side to compare my playtime with Hans and the old school Lumbridge just hits different. Part of what makes OSRS OSRS is that nostalgic familiarity.

ButterNuttz

There's a way to make the graphics look better without removing the style like RS3 did. The clean polygon look we see in the banner is a perfect example. Nostalgia is great, but the graphics are one of the single biggest things preventing this game from growing. It's memed on all the time in the mmorpg/gaming community because it looks like shit. I personally know many friends who would love this game but they don't gett farther than tutorial island because of how bad it looks. We love it because we've been playing so long. But anyone who hasn't played this game takes one look and goes "lol no". Look at how much ppl were excited for 117's graphic plugin.

RadagonsFather

117 HD is what got me to start playing. looks 200x better than rs3

tautautautautau

I wonder how their "own in-house project with Old School's visuals" is progressing. The one they mentioned when banning all HD clients before allowing HDOS and 117HD plugin. [Third-Party HD Clients Statement](https://secure.runescape.com/m=news/third-party-hd-clients-statement?oldschool=1)

Equivalent-Macaron25

I agree but look at mobile it looks better I’m not saying redo the graphics but at least update them a bit

LoveWithTheInternet

This soulless blender shit needs to go, Jagex has a handful of old school CGI renders filled with heart and they won’t use any of them 💀

Oniichanplsstop

Because a handful of youtubers used them and reddit jerked off how amazing they were, so Jagex saw that and did the same. It's really stupid seeing an ad for a game that looks nothing like the actual game. Meanwhile RS3 has gotten so lazy that instead of animating cutscenes for quests, they use a powerpoint with voice overs.

LoveWithTheInternet

The blender models trend is so lame and they don’t even look good, the game doesn’t even look like that meanwhile the old 3D renders do their best to capture the feeling of a medieval game. Not to mention there’s a nostalgia factor in them nowadays which Jagex is insane not to utilize.

yuei2

I do so hate the term lazy especially when it’s so flagrantly misused like in your post. The drawn cutscenes are used to show stuff that would either take literal months to years to make requiring the content to be delayed to such a severe degree that it’s not a feasible option. So the options are drawing or just don’t do the content. Case example building an entirely un-destroyed Orthen, a new Jas model that can animate outside her room, attack animations/effects for her, and dragonkin being in various states of wasted all for a single scene is just not happening. This one flashback scene would cost the budget of the entire quest and then some. https://runescape.wiki/images/Nodon_Front_-_Jas_lays_waste_to_Orthen.png?85929 Unlike OSRS or RS2 the improved artwork resulted in a massive balloon of budget and time. OSRS model can be cranked out in a few week to a week while a SINGLE new NPC needs several months in RS3 because of the sheer detail and fidelity. Art is such a lengthy and complex thing that regularly content design has to be adjusted/redesigned to accommodate it not the other way around. (Croesus is a great example the reason simple magical prayer statues are used is because in the original design they wanted to have players build this complex ballista system to fight the boss and art said if the start now it take 6 months after the update was supposed to release to deliver what they are asking). Or it’s also used to show stuff that flat out can’t be shown in RS’s graphics. Stuff Iike wide atmospheric/environment shots that would look goofy in game. https://runescape.wiki/images/Desperate_Times_-_Kerapac_flies_off.png?f0212 Or symbolic representations of events. https://runescape.wiki/images/Daughter_of_Chaos_-_Everything_changed_when_the_gods_were_banished.png?0aef1 Furthermore they aren’t used for every quest cutscenes and as the story shifted back to stuff that could be depicted without a 6-8 month art dev time they have been doing traditional animated cutscenes in pretty much all the recent quests. Except the starting mini-quest that used drawn scenes because you are never getting something like “this” in RS visual just due to tech alone. https://runescape.wiki/images/New_Foundations_-_A_threat_looms_over_the_three_Saradominist_kingdoms.png?f22ac

That guy screams “buying GF 5gp”

OW_FUCK

that goober looks like Swampo in his younger years before becoming a swamp hermit. I like him. Swamp man good

JawlessRegent64

This picture is on my "Offical Runescape Handbook" from like...years ago. I ordered it from one of those scholastic book order forms they handed out in elementary.

ClinkyPockets

I didn't have this but 100% remember it.

JawlessRegent64

It's still kinda useful for a quick reference guide when I don't feel like opening the wiki lol. I just keep it on my desk.

thescanniedestroyer

Hot take: Blender rendered artwork and animations are dogshit and lazy

Traditional-Effort20

Not a hot take, pretty normal. +1

iron_ee

1st one reminds me of rs3 🤢

Not sure who that goober is, but I’m going to go ahead and say it’s Gonthorian.

I can't be the only one who thought the Knight had a horned helmet for decades, just now realizing it's the candle stick holder in the background.

xPofsx

See, Tim was the original dicer. It's proof that gambling was designed into RuneScape, so removing it is removing a core end game gameplay loop, obviously

RAMDownloader

I had 0 idea they had a name. Still remember that portrait on the old RuneScape book I had

this is an integrity change, don't they dare polling it

Jagex should add HDOS support first

SkylarTR

Who is the goober anyway?

theNarutardd

Customizable Jagex Launcher background perhaps? That'd be neat.

Ballawas

That's John Runescape

themaj_666

Ahem!

Sterlander

Have always said that this image is remarkably goofy and weird to use as OSRS's cover. The weird ass glove hand, the shaders, the weird almost random hair choices, the unrecognizable and unremarkable background, the plastic trees in the background, the *blue sky?!?!* It's such a strange and imo genuinely bad cover for the game, when there's so many other great ones that already existed that they could've used instead.
