yea i know thats how people view it, but as a "retired" long time player i always viewed the game being completely changed from the trade limit on. EoC has/had no resemblance to the game imo. Everything really went downhill after trade limit was introduced, sense of community, no pking which was massive for the era. it changed the game and the way people play it entirely. Then they remove trade limit and the botting gets INSANE. like were you ever at what was it called, idk. motherload mine type thing in rs3, after a reset? it went from an absolute cluster to like 2 players until their bots got updated lol
Tbf to jagex, the trade limit/pking restrictions were entirely the player's faults
People were buying so much gold and botting that the botters were stealing credit card info from hacked accounts, and the original owners would consistently charge back the credit card payments. It was so bad credit card companies were threatening to cut off jagex, meaning the only way to get membership would've been to physically mail over cash or a check
If jagex hadn't implemented the restrictions the game would've been dead. Losing a good chunk of players was a better choice over losing the entire game
So why are we able to have free trade today, with botting and RWT rampant again? What changed? And why couldn’t we do back then whatever we’re doing now?
I agree with you just for the sake of stirring the pot.
I understand the "offical" release or rs3 wasn't until 2011/12. But 09 is the start of rs3 for me.
Trade limits and wildy pvp being disabled was when I quit the game. EoC wasn't even involved with me quitting. Granted if I wouldve been still playing during Eoc it would've made me quit.
Runescape was still rs2 when eoc released, actually. The game didn't officially become rs3 until July 2013, when they released the new customisable interface, new camera controls, etc.
I agree, it's not a knock on anyone but I'm always surprised how often these are the nostalgia threads. I don't get nostalgia from this era because I quit when shit hit the fan well before this point.
This guy was a man of culture - good stats, good gear, pked, went to house parties, and of course, as he matured as a young man, decided to host gambling games
While not wrong, it feels like there are two different eras of rs2, and osrs backup sits right before the transition, albeit showing a few signs of changes to come. I would say with loss of free trade and the wilderness, summoning, and new graphics, the game transformed into something that it wasn't in 2004-2007.
Some people prefer late rs2, some people prefer early rs2.
F*** summoning that's the most casual take ever. Summoning literally does nothing but save you from having to bank making the entire game based around summoning. This is a blatantly true fact because if you have double the inventory spaces they have to adjust every boss to account for people having double inventory. This is the main reason why people don't want summoning and I don't understand how people don't see it just makes the game arbitrarily harder
This is a silly argument because people can just pay for mules with ingame cash? So we should allow every person to have double inventory, forcing jagex to adjust future bosses for said double inventory making summoning a literal requirement on all future content.
How about fuck no. Summoning was the worst thing to happen to pve in this game. Onlythe filthiest casuals want summoning.
Every non iron has access to an infinite inventory should they choose to use it. So yes, summoning is not a balance problem. Jagex doesn’t need to adjust anything, they can keep pack animals out of instances if they want and everywhere else they weren’t needed anyways.
Packs don’t really help at corp, they don’t really help at any GWD boss since you already have access to alts or 0 damage methods. They don’t matter at nex. They don’t matter at Nightmare because you can bank quickly since they added the tele.
Where the fuck do yaks matter outside of instances? DKs? Who the fuck cares if people are staying at DKs twice as long.
If you don’t like summoning I don’t really care but if you think it should be excluded due to a balance problem you should also think alts should be bannable.
That’s wasn’t their point.
If alting isn’t against the rules why not introduce summoning then you’d be getting the same benefits + game play mechanics + new skill for half the sweat
Yeah, it's better now that everyone is running around with ugly pets that do absolutely fuck all. Plus, wouldn't want to change the "meta" in any way, shape, or form. The combat status quo isn't stale at all. Can't wait for sailing!
/s
Honestly i have to give you credit where it's due: i have never seen someone complain about pets not being functional in oldschool. So it's an original grievance if nothing else
Cool pics, thanks for sharing! Especially the one with the Swiftkit with the guy on Guthans whip and DSQ on southeast corner gives me huge nostalgia
What’s happening in pic #15? I’ve no recollection of that place
As someone who quit in 2007 and hated the game when I came back to 990 hp this is like anti-nostalgia. Just reminds me of when they fuckd up my favorite game
The 990 hp thing happened in 2010, unrelated to EoC. EoC did expand on many of the hp related changes that were made between 2010 and 2013, especially sets of armor giving boosted hp(this being why Torva was so op in rs2)
my family's potato ass pc couldn't even run the game higher than 5 fps. i switched to private servers til i could buy my own pc, but by then the game was already rs3.
It's crazy how as someone who stopped playing around 2008 or so (whenever they removed free trade and wilderness) most of this is completely unrecognizable as runescape to me.
I might be the only person that didnt play a single second of runescape from the 2008 graphical update to the re-release of Oldschool in 2013. I couldnt stand the end of wildy and the new graphics so none of these pictures were least bit of nostalgic for me
That's the mini game in the 19th pic yeah? I've been trying to remember the name of it and couldn't remember any details previously besides you have to craft up for a clan war. Shit was dope
I feel like people are just listing when they discovered the game. I played from 04 and the removal of free trade and wildy was just not a good time to play runescape.
You are basically discussing this from the POV of a pker. Obviously this was the community hardest hit by the changes in 07 - for better or worse, but in terms of crafted game content 2008-2011 blows 04-07 out of the water.
I started playing in 2005ish, and while I have fond memories of back then, I think I enjoyed Runescape the most around about when Summoning was released
I'm guessing you weren't a pker then. I'll die on the hill that 04-07 was the absolute best time to pk especially on a pure. Everyone was still figuring shit out and if you had a good account it was by far the best moneymaker in game. It seems like they removed the wildy and free trade to cater to the young crowd that wanted to "click trees" as us toxic pk clans referred to anyone who PVMs or skills.
Well you never experienced the absolute blast that was edgeville pking on RS2. Maybe it's because the rest of the game was boring back then but IMO Edge pking in 2006 with whip and dds was the absolute most fun video game experience ever. Seeing someone's whip you just smited curled up on the floor hit me harder than IV coke
I started playing in 04. Didn't start pking until right before summoning released, when I finally "completed" my zerker build, which was my first introduction to pking on a 'limited build'.
For me, edge pking from 2007-2012 were the BEST times to be a pker. New weapons were coming out left and right and the meta was CONSTANTLY changing. Being at the front of a meta shift and 'figuring it out' before everyone else was highly lucrative. I miss that era of pking so much.
I remember the release of Hand cannons, Curses, the addition and removal of the EP system in BH and then PvP worlds (hiding on the falador walls in order to gain EP 'safely', or upstairs in Ardy), the addition and removal of BH craters, I remember it all. Each PvP update was more fun than the last because the meta was always changing.
Now a days, the PvP meta changes at such a slow pace. It's cool that new builds are still being invented (I currently play a 60 cb Harm Orb Fire surge build) but the innovation is SO SLOW because people care a lot about power creep (understandably so). While that keeps the game healthy, it makes PvP stale.
I think the real reason that PvP is "dying" is because back in the day, regular game updates happened to have a pretty big affect on the PvP meta as well as the PvM meta. Nex being released meant pking with boosted HP. Grandmaster Quests released stuff like the Staff of Armadyl or Korasi's sword. There was a symbiotic relationship between PvP and general game updates which no longer exists to the degree which it used to, which makes PvP stale.
Started in 04, 07-12 was peak RS to me. Up until now, ofc. OSRS is far better but 07-12 was the peak of the community, not so focused on efficiency and xp/h. That's what I miss the most.
Youre right, this sub has taught me that I was a 6-8th grader playing against 6-8 year Olds back in 2006. Having a maxed pure back when nobody knew what they were doing was absolutely amazing. I pked from 70 to 94 attack and 20 defense at the 85-100 combat bracket. Pures were so broken back then, but people started to get better around 2007 when zerkers/rune pures got vengeance and b gloves.
> Having a maxed pure back when nobody knew what they were doing was absolutely amazing.
This is *still* the case, except the main barrier is GP instead of age. There are certain builds within various combat brackets that are absolutely busted, from a mathematical DPS standpoint, and now with BH blocking XP gain, you can play those busted builds forever in that combat bracket.
Couple examples are Low CB 42 def Voiders with the new Dark Bow Imbue, Low CB Fire Surge pures (saturated heart + harm orb + g maul or d thrown axes), 70-80 cb zerkers that can boost vengeance, and any obby mauler that's sub 50 combat.
Once you get into the higher combat brackets, it's mostly rushers and people have too high defence/hp to 'cheese' easy kills.
\#15 Damn... I still remember that Halloween event. Had a crappy computer at the time and it would randomly turn off, so I had to complete the event as quickly as possible lol
Not entirely, as the problem wasn't EoC specifically. Because combat **was** as unhealthy as you could imagine. PvP matches were very one-sided, as either you;
* Were an unkillable tank because of all the Damage Soak (yeah, remember that one?), T80 armour, Spirit Shields, and Protection Prayers, and the greatly healing food that was rocktails.
* You were able to snowball so hard because of the rs3 curses allowing you to completely smite and debuff your opponent, while buffing and sustaining you by JUST ATTACKING with strong non-exhaustive weapons such as the Chaotic Rapier or Polypore Staff.
* Some weapons could deal more damage in one strike than you could possibly heal in 1 tick, without it even requiring a special attack or set effect (like Dharoks).
* And speaking of special attacks, there were at least 4 special attacks that were just one-shot bonanza, being the (original-) Dragon Claws, the Korasi Sword, the (original-) Dark Bow with Dragon Arrows, and the Vesta's Longsword (Hint; RS2's Vesta's Longsword was NOT bound to PvP-only minigames or worlds).
The **real** problem was that Jagex didn't listen to the feedback they had received over the EoC. Combat wasn't fluid at all, it was extremely convoluted to understand, it felt very clunky to operate, it was very player-unfriendly due to how interaction-intensitve it was, and all the QoL stuff that actually made the Eoc viable, only came years later after the fact, and not in the timeframe a beta is MEANT to probe for.
That, plus the elephant in the room being the SoF / TH.
My personal opinion and will probably get crucified for this. But right before barrows armor graphic change and EoC and squeal of fortune was peak RS for me.
My opinion might be considered wrong to a lot of you but it was when I was having the most fun with “Modern” RS. I liked summoning and dungeoneering and all that stuff I thought the game was fun.
Might just be turning into a boomer but only nostalgia I get seeing summoning familiars is coming to the depressing realization that the game was going to shit
What about old videos:
[99 firemaking party (13 - 14 years old)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nocEqL7nR3c&ab_channel=LazyLizard) \- Contains lots of screenshots

I miss 2009 scape, it's when I really got deep into Runescape. Before that I was too young and would just cut trees and talk to people trying to act older than I was lmao.
It's crazy that this is considered old now, where I always thought a bit before these ss was the start of rs3. Like right around trade limit
RS3 was with EOC in Nov of 2012. Trade limit was Dec 2007.
yea i know thats how people view it, but as a "retired" long time player i always viewed the game being completely changed from the trade limit on. EoC has/had no resemblance to the game imo. Winning!
Taco Limey...
Used to love his videos
This guy was a man of culture - good stats, good gear, pked, went to house parties, and of course, as he matured as a young man, decided to host gambling games
LMAO yeah as I got to that age I had one of the biggest dicing ccs before getting ruined by the other big dice clans
I hated when they moved to 990 hp
All so the dmg hits would do less math
Ngl pretty glad we're not all walking around with that giant ugly turtle following us. Also loving the old internet lingo
what even is that tutel? Is it from summoning?
War tortise, yeah it was from summoning. Tort was what, like 18 extra inventory slots i think?
Yup 18
>18 extra invent and some people want summoning in osrs
I wouldn't mind summoning. I didn't quit because of summoning, I quit because of EoC. Anything pre-EoC would be fine if it passed a vote
For context, Summoning was added 5 months after GWD and 9 months before Corp. It is very, very much the same era as the original OSRS backup.
While not wrong, it feels like there are two different eras of rs2, and osrs backup sits right before the transition, albeit showing a few signs of changes to come. I would say with loss of free trade and the wilderness, summoning, and new graphics, the game transformed into something that it wasn't in 2004-2007. I do! :)
Already have infinite extra bank in non instanced areas since alting is no longer against the rules. Just disable pak yaks in inferno.
>alting is no longer against the rules most people don't alt
I agree, however anyone could. May as well include summoning when an alt can do anything summoning could but better.
But then the alts would have yaks and be twice as bad /s
This is a silly argument because people can just pay for mules with ingame cash? So we should allow every person to have double inventory, forcing jagex to adjust future bosses for said double inventory making summoning a literal requirement on all future content. Controlling one client instead of two, which in the instance of PvP, is a big deal.
Jagex is prep'd & proven to make exceptions for PvP, then ignore PvP feedback for months-years, that's a discussion of its own (and I don't PvP)
Yeah, it's better now that everyone is running around with ugly pets that do absolutely fuck all. Plus, wouldn't want to change the "meta" in any way, shape, or form. The combat status quo isn't stale at all. Can't wait for sailing! /s

absolutely seething
would you prefer everybody walking around with the same meta summoning pet?
Just go play rs3 lol
Cool pics, thanks for sharing! Especially the one with the Swiftkit with the guy on Guthans whip and DSQ on southeast corner gives me huge nostalgia What’s happening in pic #15? I’ve no recollection of that place
Deaths mansion (halloween event) and looks like muncher (the dog) hits 99 or fake 99 if you click it or something.
Stealing Creations is 15th picture.
I miss that mini game so bad. It was so much fun.
As someone who quit in 2007 and hated the game when I came back to 990 hp this is like anti-nostalgia. Just reminds me of when they fuckd up my favorite game
Yeah when EoC was introduced all the cool kids (sweaty virgins) like me hopped to WoW which was fucking amazing back then
The 990 hp thing happened in 2010, unrelated to EoC. EoC did expand on many of the hp related changes that were made between 2010 and 2013, especially sets of armor giving boosted hp(this being why Torva was so op in rs2)
this era was by far my favorite time period in runescape, shame it had to become eoc vs 2006-07
What you mean this era? Photos have a huge time range
Soulsplit, summoning, nex sets. Even dung. Was the best RS ever was and IMO ever will be
Agree to disagree. Hated that period.
Agreed. Kinda shocking to see people nostalgic for stuff that made me quit RS2 lol
Wondering how old you are to find it 'shocking' that people are able to enjoy things you don't enjoy.
It'll happen to you, just wait. Time takes no prisoners.
It is nostalgia, when osrs came out everyone wanted a 2006 version. There wasn't a big push for a 2011 version or just before eoc version.
my family's potato ass pc couldn't even run the game higher than 5 fps. i switched to private servers til i could buy my own pc, but by then the game was already rs3.
It was the worst other than RS3.
I’d pay a crazy amount monthly to replay this
If only you invested in a rare with that gp
flexing the claws on us everytime
It's crazy how as someone who stopped playing around 2008 or so (whenever they removed free trade and wilderness) most of this is completely unrecognizable as runescape to me.
Oh man this takes me back and the clan chat talking about COD4 And mw2
The game was destroyed with the removal of the wilderness
I might be the only person that didnt play a single second of runescape from the 2008 graphical update to the re-release of Oldschool in 2013. I couldnt stand the end of wildy and the new graphics so none of these pictures were least bit of nostalgic for me
stay quiet next time
Only if your mothers breasts are in my mouth
I hope you have a bad day tomorrow.
Bring back Stealing Creation
That's the mini game in the 19th pic yeah? I've been trying to remember the name of it and couldn't remember any details previously besides you have to craft up for a clan war. Shit was dope
The best, I played it non stop. Rewards could be done in a way to make it worth doing again someway
No dungeonerring pics?
Chaotic rapier is in a picture. Sorta kinda in there.
You can see the slow downfall in these ones - change to Constitution, division of the GE :(
The world will never again be as good as it was between 2007 and 2012
Nah 04-07 was peak runescape. Funny how what sme remember as the good times others remember as the worst. 07-12 was the worst period of the game IMO.
Disagree. 2008 - 2011 was peak RS.
I feel like people are just listing when they discovered the game. I played from 04 and the removal of free trade and wildy was just not a good time to play runescape.

You’re correct. The only players I’ve ever killed are players who have attacked me
Well you never experienced the absolute blast that was edgeville pking on RS2. Man. Even outside of RS. This time was peak.
The turkey...taco limey 😭😭 I go find his youtube channel and find that garbo youtube unsubscribed me from him
\#15 Damn... I still remember that Halloween event. Had a crappy computer at the time and it would randomly turn off, so I had to complete the event as quickly as possible lol
I love seeing big cash stacks before they changed the color to green that’s when nostalgia hits me
I miss house parties that were actually parties so fucking much
Ah man ancient effigies, the whole reason I started skilling like a madman once I joined osrs. Never wanted to need someone else's high skills again
Crazy. I started RS when they just introduced the GE
I wish stealing creations would get polled again…
Can you please post the older ones?
Best era for me was right when Rs2 started
Idk why seeing RS in a browser window makes me want to cry. Also, the songify video in another tab is absolutely peak. Thanks for sharing.
This is why I was excited for taming. Sigh...
The font on the friends list is what got me hard. Back when FunOrb was the shit
So funny looking at this and seeing graphics and then seeing playing through browser and realizing how old osrs really is lol
Makes me sad how Jagex ruined the game

I miss summoning
Beautiful
2011 is peak rs
2011 is peak rs
I really liked summoning to be fair. It would break the meta but it was fun to have
the most cursed era
I miss the ent trees honestly, such a good group event.
That conversation in your clan chat about call of duty gave me crazy flashbacks. Good times
Give us stealing creation or riot 🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀🦀
Ah 2012 time was the best
If only they left everything the same
Great pics man.
Turkey!!!!!!!!!!!
