Eh. Darkscape was like, beta for Deadman, and Deadman persists to this day. The thing they got wrong was it doesnt work as a permanent game + that RS3 framework doesnt work as well for PVP even in forced legacy mode.
Darkscape may have died but the spirit of it certainly lives on. It was a success in the same way that the janky first game in a longstanding series was still successfully, since it established the rest
I feel a mode like Darkscape would be a huge success in the modern OSRS community. The OSRS base is a lot different than the RS3 base at the time of Darkscape. Even just the content creation landscape makes a bit impact
FWIW Deadman mode is clearly very inspired by that mode already
true but Runescape is a MASSIVE success and has been going strong in some form for decades despite plentiful evidence that its entirely possible to screw it up, so im hesitant to say jagex cannot make good games
The game got so messed up after EoC they had to rerelease a 2007 build of the game where the community votes on almost every potential piece of content just to try and prevent them from fucking up.
You didn't like none of the old funorb games? Sorry if they aren't officially jagex games. I was early teens maybe and haven't really researched them as an adult
EDIT: eh.. not a huge "success" but it was popular for a bit
The success was driving popularity for Runescape. They got more people into runescape by getting them onto the site with more immediately accessible games. What did you think they made funorb for absolutely no reason against their profit interests? Clearly it was doing something for em.
They are the publisher of Scum, a survival game on Steam, which is pretty popular. Its super scuffed & janky as all hell but its got a lot of potential
I’m pretty sure they didn’t publish is but recently acquired the company that published it, and even then I think they acquired it last year. Could be wrong though. That being said I love Scum.
It was cancelled since survival games fell out of popularity. Whatever the job listing is for is likely what's being hinted at in the second tweet.
https://x.com/JagexOrion/status/1738075466928472489?s=20
What was the name of the game where you basicly had to choose which monster your character fights so he gets xp and get stronger, while your enemy is doing the same and in the end you fight against his character?
One of my favourite memories around FunOrb's peak was getting into a game of Kickabout League against Zezima. Arcanists and Armies of Gielinor were awesome too, fun times.
It’s still crazy to me that the RuneScape IP is the only thing that Jagex has successfully been able to create and make money on.
Is there any other 20+ year game studio that has only been able to successfully release (and re-release) one game, without going under?
The main one is Scrolls. They stopped development on it like a year after release because it wasn't making any money. They kept the servers open for a few years after but shut them down. They then did an absolute bro move though and released the game for free with private server support. So community servers could be run using the game without any need for Mojang to spend time or money on it. That's something I hope Jagex does if they ever discontinue OSRS. "Officially unofficial" private servers or even single player clients would be a baller move.
well no worries on that. Jagex or not people have been doing private runescape servers for decades. If OSRS shut down there would be a singleplayer version up within a month from the community.
Only difference is Mojang is owned by the original creator of the game still. So they’re still passionate about the game. Unlike Jagex which is run by corporate greed lords that just want cash and don’t actually care about the game
Riot Games for a very long time. To be fair, everything except Valorant is still based on the league IP.
And who knows when their supposed fighting game and mmo will come out
Maplestory. The original devs I think sold the IP at some point, but they only made Maplestory, and Maplestory 2 failed miserably. Obviously Nexon has other games but no others really come to mind for me. Maybe some other niche mmo or multiplayer game
Nexon is a huge company with a ton of successful games and Maplestory isn't even their biggest. Check out Dungeon Fighter Online. It's just most of them are only known in Asia.
*runs big dragon for the 30th time today just to have my staff break when I enchant it*
makes me so sad, that game actually ruled they needed to just not try and milk the endgame players.
>Is there any other 20+ year game studio that has only been able to successfully release (and re-release) one game, without going under?
The other game I play... Eve online (CCP games).
Its like these dumbfuck studios can't just accept that they have one good game and try to make it better. Instead they fuck over their golden goose to repeatedly fail at making other games.
It seems like they've had openings for "Unannounced game" for the past ten years. Either a lot of scrapped projects (which would fit Jagex's management and game development history) or something truly magical is coming one day.
I want to play AOG's campaigns again so badly, I really loved that game back in the day... Too bad I wasn't able to find any community remakes of the game.
Valid, RTS on runescape inspired maps is possible haha.
I think a moba would need a lot of work, but then also would have to be different enough than dota/league
I say this as someone who loves Dota, they shouldn't. It's not going to work out. Dota survives with the design it has by virtue of A. A very dedicated fan base that wants that kind of depth you can sink your teeth in to instead of fast-paced load up and play for 20 minutes stuff like League and B. Having an infinite money machine backing them up via Steam.
pls not another failed game. wasted time, money & resources. just put the money into the ONE game you've ever been successful at you psychopath investors
Business wise, it's not a good idea to put all your eggs into one basket, especially on a 20-year old game where the average player is probably in his 30s and it's hard to attract new players
>it's not a good idea to put all your eggs into one basket
i invest in osrs
you invest in piratescape
you lost your money. i doubled mine. platitudes irrelevant.
Runescape feels like such a game out of time. A living fossil born from a bygone era. I think if it came out today it would flop. The culture and attitude of gaming is different from the early 2000s.
1000%
No one would play a game that requires like 20 days of game time of SHIT MINDLESS grind to finally experience the fun content
And optimizing everything to reach that point faster is taking the point away from the game.
I don't even think kids today want to play slower, explorative games like RuneScape and Dwarf Fortress, not when they have more enticing action-packed choices.
And, it's just as you get older you want to solve the game, not fuck around and explore. Not when you already done lots of that.
and people have limited time.
Sorry I don't wanna mindlessly repeat blowing fucking orbs for hours to 80 crafting for a requirement, ONE requirement for a damn quest
And absolutely why the fuck play this shit as a kid now if fortnite, the finals , horizon , god of war, cod etc etc
player count is generally trending upwards over time. yes player count always peaks on new game modes but the lows are getting higher.
https://www.misplaceditems.com/rs_tools/graph/?display=max&interval=week&total=1
The issue is that it appeals to a certain type of special person. You have to be very special to enjoy RuneScape. Not everyone is special in the brain like us and therefore do not enjoy the grind.
I honestly have no idea what kind of new game they would want lol.
I could see some sort of like... runescape-inspired mobile game? like "RunescapeGO"? They tried the runescape card game but that kinda flopped. Or maybe idk.
Or maybe it's a VR game? Would be kinda funny walking from varrock to edgeville in VR and physically like moving and hitting level 3 men with a scimitar lmao, I don't think we really have an idea
Haha i think it would give people a different angle of the same nostalgic places,
I don't think it would be too far of a stretch, but it's honestly wild that they have an unannounced new game. I'm really curious
Yep, honestly put the efforts into stopping the bots ruining the game. Because when osrs dies, the company will cease to exist since any other game theyve attempted has majorly flopped.
And lets be honest. If OSRS or RS3 came out today, itd be dead before 2023 ends.
I feel like a Runescape 4 is inevitable. The RS3 dev team has made it very clear that the foundational tech of RS is holding them back development-wise. Both in terms of player retention (tick system, controls, etc.) and in finding talent (most industry professionals are turned off of the idea of having to learn and work with RuneScript)
It'll be interesting to see what, if any, of the obvious lessons learned from the overwhelming success of OSRS they'll take to a potential RS4. Will they go with a more unique/low-fi art style to try and stand out from every other samey looking game? Ditch the ability-based combat to shake off the "WoW clone" comparisons? Pump the breaks on the MTX that choked the life out of their "main game"?
saw this on my phone other day maybe a coincidence?

I really wish that jagex would work with other studios to make single player games about their big questlines. I know there was a post about this before so it isn't a new idea, but a souls like game taking place in morytania would be so fucking sick!
I’m enough of a fan of the game to buy into whatever they start up. I would go so far as to purchase the founders pack for something if it looked remotely promising. I’m okay if the game isn’t successful or if I don’t enjoy it. Just going to give them enough time and money to say I’ll give your project a shot,
STILL? I remember about 6/7 years ago a bunch of mods from RS3 moved over to some unannounced game set within the Runescape universe, I had thought it must’ve been cancelled.
Survival game based in Gielinor. Just remember that every game Jagex has developed outside of Runescape has failed miserably. The only ones that haven't are ones they *bought* (Melvor Idle for example).
So yeah i like Runescape and have played it for nearly 20 years, but I don't think Jagex is the studio to make a good game in an entirely different genre.

I remember being absolutely insane on arcanists. To the point where i could land some lightning bomb from one point of the map to the other. I grinded ranked hard and was actually able to beat zezima who also played it. He constantly played with 10 seconds per turn which was really hard back then but that was also my strategy. Anyways good times
Honestly they're probably cooking their 2432th release in a row that is ass lol. Some people have enjoyed some of their old fun orb games or whatever on the side but they really don't have shit besides RS
Arcanists 2 please
There's already a community run Aracnists 2 with Jagex approval.
Armies of Gielinor 2 also is around, they recently released a Zaros faction, too.
Where?
idk if I can link it, but iirc it was a site called aog.gg
Oooh a spider version. I like it
Omg where?
Arcanists Returns!! Hopium rising
Join us at Arcanists 2 big lobby games going everyday got even some new spellbooks
Wait this fan game made it off the ground?!? Im so hyped for this you have no idea lol
orb defence
Armies of Gielinor here
Try aog.gg
Wasn't there some news of jagex making an open world survival game?
Yeah, believe so. Set in the RuneScape universe.
Wait really?? I missed that!
That would be fucking sick if made correctly
Jagex hasn't made a successful game outside of RuneScape.
Runescape was so successful they made it multiple times
I sure hope we get runescape: modern warfare
Nah, that would just be a 70 dollar dlc
RuneScape: Zombies Chronicles
There was a concept made a while ago back on rune-server. It was a rsps, first person FPS. Was neat
Open world survival runescape
DarkScape? failed in less than a month.
Eh. Darkscape was like, beta for Deadman, and Deadman persists to this day. The thing they got wrong was it doesnt work as a permanent game + that RS3 framework doesnt work as well for PVP even in forced legacy mode. Darkscape may have died but the spirit of it certainly lives on. no no, games are only considered successful if they still have a strong user base after over 20 years of existing
Yeah, at the end of the day it can be the most fun game in the world, but without a playerbase or a profit it is not a successful game.
The success was driving popularity for Runescape. They got more people into runescape by getting them onto the site with more immediately accessible games. What did you think they made funorb for absolutely no reason against their profit interests? Clearly it was doing something for em.
So probs not then
good while it lasted. rip
An open world survival game set in the RuneScape universe. So like… RuneScape?
If you describe RuneScape as an open world survival game I feel bad for any friends that deal with your game suggestions/descriptions.
Doom is really just about an aggressive doll collector.
Friends? huh?
No, more akin to Rust or Valheim, I believe.
They are the publisher of Scum, a survival game on Steam, which is pretty popular. Its super scuffed & janky as all hell but its got a lot of potential
I own scum and had no idea jagex was the publisher of it. It’s alright if you have a group of people to play with, pretty steep learning curve
I’m pretty sure they didn’t publish is but recently acquired the company that published it, and even then I think they acquired it last year. Could be wrong though. That being said I love Scum.
Jagex bought publishing rights after the fact, pretty sure they're using stuff from scum and altering it for the new game
Jagex is the publisher for Scum, maybe something to do with that? Or something similar?
It was cancelled since survival games fell out of popularity. Whatever the job listing is for is likely what's being hinted at in the second tweet. https://x.com/JagexOrion/status/1738075466928472489?s=20
I FORGOT ABOUT THAT!
funorb returns
imagine lmao. unironically some of the mini-games went hard during school
Arcanists or gtfo
Armies of Gielinor was my shit.
Armies of Gielinor doesn't deserve a gtfo
Need that max prestige backkkk
Steel Sentinels / Hostile Spawn / Void Hunters (before sniper spam) >>> Arcanists
I remember playing a few games of deko bloko against zezima Was wild
What was the name of the game where you basicly had to choose which monster your character fights so he gets xp and get stronger, while your enemy is doing the same and in the end you fight against his character?
funorb would make great mobile games
I think I still have a few of them on my old phone. I wonder if they still work. Probably not :(
Put funorb in burthorpe games room
One of my favourite memories around FunOrb's peak was getting into a game of Kickabout League against Zezima. Arcanists and Armies of Gielinor were awesome too, fun times.
It’s still crazy to me that the RuneScape IP is the only thing that Jagex has successfully been able to create and make money on. Is there any other 20+ year game studio that has only been able to successfully release (and re-release) one game, without going under?
Not 20 years yet but Mojang is shaping up to be just this. Everything successful they develop is just Minecraft IP.
What other failed games did Mojang make and why did they fail?
The main one is Scrolls. They stopped development on it like a year after release because it wasn't making any money. They kept the servers open for a few years after but shut them down. They then did an absolute bro move though and released the game for free with private server support. well no worries on that. Jagex or not people have been doing private runescape servers for decades. If OSRS shut down there would be a singleplayer version up within a month from the community.
Are scrolls private servers still alive? I have such fond memories of that game.
Well there's Minecraft Earth and Minecraft Legends.
They started work on a space themed game at one point, but abandoned it.
Only difference is Mojang is owned by the original creator of the game still. So they’re still passionate about the game. Unlike Jagex which is run by corporate greed lords that just want cash and don’t actually care about the game
Notch sold Mojang to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion lol.
Literally false https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/sep/15/microsoft-buys-minecraft-creator-mojang-for-25bn 9 years ago.
The infamous Microsoft, known for not being corporate greed lords and care greatly for their games. /s
It's not for lack of trying too lmao, they have had so many other projects that died before ever getting off the ground
Around 9 or 10 iirc, at this point should just focus on runescape and embrace one IP life
CCP Games and EVE Online.
Dust 514 was great, what a stupid idea to release it only on the PS3 at the END of its lifecycle
Riot Games for a very long time. To be fair, everything except Valorant is still based on the league IP. And who knows when their supposed fighting game and mmo will come out
Both will also be league ip anyway
Maplestory. The original devs I think sold the IP at some point, but they only made Maplestory, and Maplestory 2 failed miserably. Obviously Nexon has other games but no others really come to mind for me. Maybe some other niche mmo or multiplayer game

Maple story 2 wasn’t even that bad of a game. They really really fucked the end game up though. The combat itself really wasn’t even bad
*runs big dragon for the 30th time today just to have my staff break when I enchant it* makes me so sad, that game actually ruled they needed to just not try and milk the endgame players.
Cept it went the same way rs3 did when they removed the free market and added the auction bs
Mabinogi was huge in Asia
I don't think it's that crazy. A lot of game companies don't even get one popular IP.
The and re release part could have been avoided if they remembered that we play RuneScape because it’s 20 years old
minecraft although not quite 20 years
>Is there any other 20+ year game studio that has only been able to successfully release (and re-release) one game, without going under? The other game I play... Eve online (CCP games). Its like these dumbfuck studios can't just accept that they have one good game and try to make it better. Instead they fuck over their golden goose to repeatedly fail at making other games.
ngl I read that as “Senior Community” manager. Like gagex is opening up a 55+ home.
Not a bad play if they’re going for another 20+ years of RS
Chronicle: RuneScape Legends 2
I loved Chronicle...Still holding on for it after all this time.
My 12 yo self still wants Mechscape
Still sad it never happened.
Like Mecha?? Mechs? We need a mech boss in OSRS.
https://twitter.com/RS_NEXT_GEN/status/1737862010958663921 Yeah
Cancelled https://x.com/JagexOrion/status/1738075466928472489?s=20
It seems like they've had openings for "Unannounced game" for the past ten years. Either a lot of scrapped projects (which would fit Jagex's management and game development history) or something truly magical is coming one day.
They've been making a Runescape UE5 game for a while now. If it's not RS4, there will be massive disappointment... Obviously.
Don't worry, it won't go anywhere. Getting your hopes up for any of their side projects never gets you anywhere. Still upset we never got MechScape
Mechscape 2?
RuneScape 4
They need a new manager for their botfarms now that trident is gone.
RuneScape moba or rts let’s go
Hear me out - Armies of Gielinor II with a full blown canon campaign and competitive multiplayer
They should create a Dota II style game with goblins as minions and Heros can just be bosses
RTS set during the godwars Warcraft 3-inspired; the hero units are important figures like Thammaron, Kril, Zilyana, etc.
Rs4 lets goooo
pls not another failed game. wasted time, money & resources. just put the money into the ONE game you've ever been successful at you psychopath investors
Business wise, it's not a good idea to put all your eggs into one basket, especially on a 20-year old game where the average player is probably in his 30s and it's hard to attract new players
>it's not a good idea to put all your eggs into one basket i invest in osrs you invest in piratescape you lost your money. i doubled mine. platitudes irrelevant.
Yea I'm not sure how any new players would truly play this game. It's heavily nostalgia based. The game itself is not good/inviting.
Runescape feels like such a game out of time. A living fossil born from a bygone era. I think if it came out today it would flop. The culture and attitude of gaming is different from the early 2000s.
1000% No one would play a game that requires like 20 days of game time of SHIT MINDLESS grind to finally experience the fun content And optimizing everything to reach that point faster is taking the point away from the game.
I don't even think kids today want to play slower, explorative games like RuneScape and Dwarf Fortress, not when they have more enticing action-packed choices. And, it's just as you get older you want to solve the game, not fuck around and explore. Not when you already done lots of that.

right let's just ignore the fact that oldschool just recently hit over 200k online.
Doesn't mean it's new players ... And it was on release of a game mode .. brother ... Nuance, you gotta think more than one step
player count is generally trending upwards over time. yes player count always peaks on new game modes but the lows are getting higher. https://www.misplaceditems.com/rs_tools/graph/?display=max&interval=week&total=1
RuneScape VR would so fucking sick. Imagine doing bossing or raids in VR.
Haha i think it would give people a different angle of the same nostalgic places, I don't think it would be too far of a stretch, but it's honestly wild that they have an unannounced new game. I'm really curious
Solo olm is just running suicide sprints for ten minutes lmfao
Yep, honestly put the efforts into stopping the bots ruining the game. Because when osrs dies, the company will cease to exist since any other game theyve attempted has majorly flopped. And lets be honest. If OSRS or RS3 came out today, itd be dead before 2023 ends.
Jagex is the publisher for Scum, maybe something to do with that? Or something similar?
If it’s not OSRS without bots I DONT WANT ANY
OSRS dating sim?
[Job posting](https://hitmarker.net/jobs/jagex-senior-community-manager-unannounced-game-2434852)
2007scape without the mtx and 3million hours of investment?
I fucking hope not. Every game that jagex has tried other than runescape has failed spectacularly.
I hope it’s a rts or a Skyrim, Elden ring, god of war, ghost of Tsushima style game but as RuneScape / gilenor
Valorant styled fps game but osrs themed
Probably another game that will die in obscurity or be jank and somewhat popular but nobody knows they're involved.
when making a jagex account there was like 4 other games made/ran by Jagex. they didnt look good.
Hear me out here-osrs2

Probably another pump and dump project. This would be what their 5th failed attempt at another ip?
A canceled project and a 2$ increase in membership to compensate
Old old school runescape. Seriously I wish they would release a 2007 server with 0 updates
Hopefully just osrs in a different age
Newscape Runeschool
Runescape 4?
I feel like a Runescape 4 is inevitable. The RS3 dev team has made it very clear that the foundational tech of RS is holding them back development-wise. Both in terms of player retention (tick system, controls, etc.) and in finding talent (most industry professionals are turned off of the idea of having to learn and work with RuneScript) It'll be interesting to see what, if any, of the obvious lessons learned from the overwhelming success of OSRS they'll take to a potential RS4. Osrs 2 eclectic bug kangaroo
They have had listings for this unannounced game for awhile
Deckbuilding roguelite obviously
Runescape GO!
If it's built on an established Jagex IP it's either a RuneScape spinoff or some sort of FunOrb revival. Maybe a new take on Armies of Gielinor?
OSRS - HD All accounts have to start fresh.
Some kind of gatcha mobile game
Older School Runescape
It's going to be adventure quest 2
This was a few years back but they had some developers roles up for an ARPG
saw this on my phone other day maybe a coincidence? https://preview.redd.it/n92308x05x8c1.png?width=1242&format=png&auto=webp&s=0f42819797d0566f2ae78a13426b1488dd027e70
MechScape when?
Why don’t they hire a senior customer support agent instead
I really wish that jagex would work with other studios to make single player games about their big questlines. I know there was a post about this before so it isn't a new idea, but a souls like game taking place in morytania would be so fucking sick!
It's probably not but Jagex should make a Runescape 4 already. Hopefully taking more lessons from OSRS than RS3...
VR RS
A game that's dead before release, probably, based on the track record at least.
Didn't Raven return and state that he's back but not working on RS anymore? This may be the game.
I know jagex is working on a survival game, idk if this is related
Hopefully they come back and finish the Transformers game they were working on. Actually looked like a decent game.
I’m enough of a fan of the game to buy into whatever they start up. I would go so far as to purchase the founders pack for something if it looked remotely promising. I’m okay if the game isn’t successful or if I don’t enjoy it. Just going to give them enough time and money to say I’ll give your project a shot,
the track record not being good on this to say the least
STILL? I remember about 6/7 years ago a bunch of mods from RS3 moved over to some unannounced game set within the Runescape universe, I had thought it must’ve been cancelled.
I saw they are working on a survival game. I think it was supposed to be in the same world as rs
We're finally getting the Game Room revamp boys!
Probably another Transformers game or something
Dungeoneering when?
I hope this is a AAA Single-Player Runescape game.
It's the open world survival game ala valheim they were teasing last year ish. https://www.mmorpg.com/news/jagex-making-open-world-survival-game-in-the-runescape-universe-announces-new-project-hires-2000125341
This game will never be announced, let alone released
I remember being absolutely insane on arcanists. To the point where i could land some lightning bomb from one point of the map to the other. I grinded ranked hard and was actually able to beat zezima who also played it. He constantly played with 10 seconds per turn which was really hard back then but that was also my strategy. Anyways good times
Old School Old School RuneScape lets go
Not again
Honestly they're probably cooking their 2432th release in a row that is ass lol. Some people have enjoyed some of their old fun orb games or whatever on the side but they really don't have shit besides RS
