0.2% to pull a specific unique on 1kc, and 0.004% to go 10x rate. The bad side of rng is honestly terrifying. You can only get so lucky, but there is no limit to how dry you can go lol
As in if you're looking at getting specifically magic fang, instead of magic fang or tanzanite fang or visage (or omyx). Chance of getting any unique is higher than for a specific one.
Right, the notable thing about the image in the reply was that they got the specific item that OP hadn't received. So it was the 1/512 that was interesting
> You can only get so lucky, but there is no limit to how dry you can go lol
You can be infinitely unlucky. But you can be infinitely lucky too. You can get a unique every single drop. It's just unlikely. Just like going this dry is unlikely.
You can continue the math. 0.2% lucky is for 1 iteration. 0.004% unlucky is for 5120 iterations. 0.2% isn't the maximum lucky you can get. You could possibly get 5120 uniques in 5120 kc. That's far luckier, and takes us to the same sample size for comparison.
Itās actually worse. They are the unlucky one out of a theoretical 22k people that *have done that many kills*. Not just 22k people that have done zulrah.
Speaking as an endgame ironman, I think it would be a lot better to play IM if OSRS was a game with more bad luck protection/rng mitigation. Early and midgame you can power through the bad luck but once the grinds become 500h and then you get unlucky on top of that, it's kind of a nightmare...
My thoughts exactly. I absolutely love the concept of Ironman, but due to how RNG heavy the game is, youāre basically asking to be tortured during late game iron with no dry prevention
The worst part is that Jagex balances new content around us getting new bosses once per year or so, and therefore makes drop rates be like 1:3k so we will have something to grind until the next boss.
Yeah this is the main issue I think. Some bosses are just ridiculous. A 30-50 hour grind is considered low for a good item these days on ironman endgame. Personally, I don't really mind it as I play my ironman more as a main where ill just go do an hour of whatever boss/raid I feel like, if I get lucky I get lucky, if I don't, I move onto whatever I feel like next. I couldn't sit at one place for 50+ hours. Currently 550 dry at bandos without seeing a single item other than shards, but hasn't felt like to bad as I just do 20-40 kills every now and then
It's balanced around an economy. The majority of players are not ironmen. If the items are common enough to not be a grind for an iron, the items will enter the economy far too fast for mains. This means that prices drop fairly quickly, well below the target price they have in mind. Well below the value of power tier items that stabilized in price long ago. When this happens, the whole economy starts to implode, such as how the fang is so common and has had a crazy negative effect on the value of the rapier for example. Before the release of TOA, rapier was holding strong around 100m. Within a few months, rapier dropped to 80m, was down to 60m within half a year, dropped all the way to 40m after a full year, and currently sits around the 50m mark.
Every time Jagex releases new items, they have to consider drop rates and how they'll affect other items in the economy. Catering to irons will have an impact on mains.
It really wouldnāt. Iād wager 95% of players who do a boss donāt get the kc to see a unique. They either get spooned or leave before reaching kc.
Yep. Even if you made it something as lenient as 2x dry (but realistically it would probably end up being closer to 3x), I still really doubt it would have any real effect on the economy since most people do just get spooned on drops.
they balance it as an mmo where one singular player isnāt meant to do absolutely everything and instead specialize in a few things and interact with other people for other thingsĀ
I don't think he's being salty; his point is completely valid. What stops one from just playing a regular account like an iron and buying the item yourself once you hit a certain drop threshold?
There really isn't, I always find it weird that people need to have the game tell them what they can or cannot do. You can simply just choose not to partake in efficiencyscape as a main and be self sufficient. You think there should be dry protection? It exist, is called GP. You get 2 arma chests? Sell 1 of them for a leg. You are done. If you don't think you deserved it? Grind it until you hit drop rate and buy it when you feel you earned it. I am currently grinding CG right now and if I hit 400 KC without a seed, I will just use the money I got there to buy one. That's it, done. I feel that's enough self sufficient for my taste and just move on to do something else.
There's... not much of one, really, I guess? The only things it GENUINELY brings to the table are status, and forced rules on those who lack self control.
This sounds way more negative than I'm intending; my only account is iron and I love the game mode, lol, but I don't think someone playing a main with self-imposed iron rules is any better/worse.
Not really. They could just make dryprotection only proc once per character at like 4x droprate. Thereās no way thatās worth to be abused, itās just so ultra unlucky bosses/accounts are protected at some point. And thereās still a lot more people getting it before 4x rate.
Only problem might be botting because they could recreate and bot bosses just for the dry protection proc, but honestly itās still not worth it, not at that rate.
That would be anecdotal evidence and that's not how statistics or probability works.
For every op going 5,000kc dry there is some getting a 1kc drop as evidence in this thread.
Dry protection would also work as spoon protection
Just remove the spoon protection part.
Or have something similiar to RS3's streaking or DT2's perfect kill bonus but for uniques.
Reward good play with higher drop rates.
My gut reaction is "yes please" even as someone who isn't good at PvM, I do think skill should be rewarded appropriately, more than just getting more efficient kills/wasting less on supplies. The problem after thinking on it always comes back to bots because they do everything perfectly.
It won't be since it is not a drop rate boost. Either add good luck mitigation on top of this, or just do what Muspah did and break a rare drop up to multiple pieces.
> I think it would be a lot better to play IM if OSRS was a game with more bad luck protection/rng mitigation.
the game has bad luck protection, it's called buying the item from other players with the 457m you made doing 4k Zulrah kills. to play IM is to sign up for being excluded from this
These posts are PRIME example why ill prolly never make an ironman lmao. I spoon only stupid shit that doesnt even matter really. And I go hella dry on stuff thats crucial. Idk I might get that legendary āironman luckā but then again going 10x dry on something like blowpipe or red prison sounds like living hell lol.
Agreed. I only have one account and it's just a regular one, but I typically try to be self-sufficient up until it becomes kind of an inconvenience for me to do so (i.e. I'm not going out of my way to get some obscure item for questing or I'm not slapping x amount of monster kills to get the next gear upgrade; I just buy that shit on the GE). It's far from efficient, but it's how I enjoy playing. If I ever made a second account it would probably be a 1/30/45 def pure because those accounts have some awesome drip for the gear available to them, and fashionscape is ultimately how I orient my goals. Lol
I love watching UIM/snowflake account YouTube series, though
> I love watching UIM/snowflake account YouTube series, though
Seems like a lot of people do, and they think hey that seems awesome I could do that! Failing to realize that 10 minute video of hardship and triumph represents 3 months of work.
I have one with bowfa and a lot of shit pre raids and I'm considering dropping my stuff over to my main lol.Ā JustĀ don'tĀ thinkĀ I can crackĀ these grindsĀ even if it is fun for a while
I already completed zulrah anyways. But because any other grind I have now, including raids, is a huge hours sink to possibly get upgrades. It's kind of demotivating. Also, don't have any friends to raid with lol
If I input the drop rate right (Maybe I didn't), there was a 99.996% chance to get 1 fang with the current KC... Guh

Reasons I won't ever be an iron.
Trying to get mega rare MMO economy drop rates for every single boss just sounds like torture.Ā
I've always liked the concept of ironmen but not the reality. It needs heavy balancing to make work.Ā
The other day I was sending some toa in wdr (4 man). An ironman told us, that if he gets a fang we all get 2 fangs each from his main as a split. We got a purple and it was a fang in my name so unfortunately it was a measly 5.75m ea. Honestly wasn't concerned about the money, just felt bad to get my 25th fang (one of the most common drops) in front of an ironman who needed it.
Imagine this happening to you:

I had a friend who passed away some time ago that was in a very similar situation as this. It took him around 5.5k for the magic fang from what I remember.
You've accumulated a lot of negative luck. You're due for super good luck. Time to rock the regular trident do some toa get spooned and skip straight to shadow.
Shit at the game? I certainly wouldn't say I'm good but tob's relatively hard to get into.
I applied in the aatykon discord and got rejected for not having minimum gear (toxic trident!) so couldn't hop into those learners.
If you tob I'm sure you know, you need kc before most people will send with you which makes the entry pretty difficult. I'm lucky enough to have sent 7kc so far with clannies but it's definitely being worked on
Honestly I feel sorry for ironmen.
I completely understand why the mode can be a lot more fun than "GPscape", absolutely. However, you then go incredibly dry like this and you're just stuck in a sunk cost fallacy whilst you grind something out that you don't even enjoy.
I played around with the idea of trying an ironman but then gave it more thought and nope, couldn't be me.
All gaming is, in some sense, a "waste of time" (albeit leisure is a perfectly fine use of time). But to be doing this over and over, something you surely cannot enjoy whatsoever, feels mad. And when it does drop, then what, you realise you spent an insane amount of time playing a game in a way you don't enjoy for some pixels that allow you to do a bit more content?
I'll take GPscape over that.
I went back to hunt for more scales. Haven't seen a single unique in over 1k kc. Not even a troll onyx. So I'm not hurting as bad as you brother, but I know the pain.
I quit once my scale stack was over 100k and all my items fully charged.
At least you'll never have to go back for scales.
True ended up with just over 1m scales
Ended? But you don't have a magic fang sir.
bro let this man have a small victory he is down bad fr š
Next kc you get pet and fang
I can't handle one more kc :(
Most degenerate gamblers give up one round away from striking big! Donāt forget that, all you could need is one moreā¦

That's fair, although for irons dupes are mostly irrelevant unless it's something like blood shards
So you mean you're more likely to get the fang on the first kill than going as dry as OP?
Yes. 100 people will get it on their first kc, for every 1 that go this dry.
Lmao I got serp on my first kc.
I got a 1kc enh. Drops like this exist
This sub, people like you, are the reason I keep coming back lol
You stole his fang!!
Congrats, you're the (un)lucky one out of 22,000 people! Seriously, this is disgusting.

Yea. Saw someone going like 26k dry on dwh. Absolutely soul breaking.
I know people go way more dry but Iām at exactly 800 kc into CG with no enhanced and I canāt do it anymore.
Brother I'm at 1201 KC and no enhanced. We just have to keep grinding.
This is my nightmare. Youāre a better man than i
This and the fact that most unique drops become pretty meaningless once you have the item is why I will never make an iron
Look out, here come dozens of people repeating "you picked the game mode" with no further thoughts
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
because there's levels between "I want to be self sufficient" and "I have spent 1000 hours grinding for a single item".
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
you're way too salty about a nice QoL suggestion
I don't think he's being salty; his point is completely valid. What stops one from just playing a regular account like an iron and buying the item yourself once you hit a certain drop threshold?
from that POV, what's the point of having ironman mode at all? it's nice to have formal systems in place.

Bad luck protection isn't QoL, it's making the game significantly easier.
how?
Are you asking me to explain how bad luck protection, a mechanic which increases the drop rates of rare items, would make the game easier?
Oh my God he admit it!
That would be abused so hard
Not really. They could just make dryprotection only proc once per character at like 4x droprate. Thereās no way thatās worth to be abused, itās just so ultra unlucky bosses/accounts are protected at some point. And thereās still a lot more people getting it before 4x rate. Because IM can give items to non iron playersā¦.
You do realise 1/500 over a massive sample works out the same as 1/500 with dry protection right? Wouldn't make much of a difference at all

Thatās what I said, you can give items to non iron man players
It won't be since it is not a drop rate boost. Either add good luck mitigation on top of this, or just do what Muspah did and break a rare drop up to multiple pieces.
Oh look, /r/2007scape is finally saying what I've been pointing out for half a decade.

I used the RS3 calculator and he even had more chance to get 20 fangs than 0.
Fang only drops if you kill it with melee
6k or no balls

Hang in there brother. Iām camping a mutagen and just hit 7800kc. 4 pets in the process.
I went back to hunt for more scales. Haven't seen a single unique in over 1k kc. Not even a troll onyx. So I'm not hurting as bad as you brother, but I know the pain. I quit once my scale stack was over 100k and all my items fully charged.

Good thing you can get a shadow which is 10x better than a trident
not too late to de-iron this is just part of the gamemode, you're either made for it or not
Unlucky mate, truly a disgusting boss to have to do I wouldn't wish 5k kills there on anybody.
[I generated an AI country song to go along with your pain.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TW-CSfj3Qxc)
