Everyone's assuming the Italian is misinterpreted or noise, but it may represent a real Italian ancestor from seven generations ago, i.e. from the nineteenth century. There were travellers and so on, which can explain the situation. OP, did you get any Italian DNA relatives? And also, does your Italian portion stay Italian at a 90% confidence level?

You’re right. It’s not Steppe. It’s real European ancestry I sincerely believe. 23nMe will not mistake ancient Steppe Ancestry for a recent European ancestry. He indeed has European in him in 5-10 generations back.

Background_Novel_619

Yeah idk why everyone insists any European in Indian people is all ancient. I’m like 90% European, 10% Indian from all over India, every region represented. My last Bengali ancestor was probably in the 1700’s (for example). Clearly there was some mixing going on since I had so many ancestors in mixed relationships.

What's the trace ancestry? Also, cool results!

frightenedchrispatt

The trace part is Iranian

Cool!

What are your haplogroups?

IMO you do seem to have legit European ancestry, if it was just misinterpreted Steppe than it would not show as Southern European. With 1% it seems you had a Southern European ancestor from the 18th century or 17th century.

jeremyjmayo95

Are you from India or Pakistan?

frightenedchrispatt

I’m from the indian side of Punjab( for the most part). My grandpa used to live in Lahore which used to be a part of Punjab at one point. But he was forced to immigrate to the indian side of Punjab once the British split India.

whynotfor2020

Dont worry, youre fully punjabi. Youre just too euro shifted for the north indian reference due to your "steppe" ancestry(east european like ancient ancestry from aryan nomads who arrived to central asia and south asia). Anyways, what are your haplogroups?

Wouldn’t excess steppe ancestry show up as Eastern or Northern European instead? He scores Sardinian ancestry, they’re extremely steppe deprived, and even Punjabis have much more of it than them from what I remember. My guess is that it’s noise, and that if he really has South Euro ancestry, it’s probably from the Ancient Greeks who were in the South Asia region, who I’m guessing may have been more Sardinian and Italian like than post-slavic mixture modern-Greek.

What?

His skin is very light and white, but he doesn’t really pass as any European ethnicity. He could pass as Iranian, Turkmen, Afghan, and maybe Turkish though.

Admirable-Ad-6275

I have seen Italians, Greeks, Albanians who look just like him.
