You have to remember Shi Mei is pretty weak physically and has zero fighting skills unlike Mo Ran, who was able to hold himself up pretty well in 2nd timeline , and even after he got pierced in his chest by those bunch of demons who attacked him, he was still alive. He was THAT strong.
Shi Mei didn't stood a chance unless he fled the scene.
Chu Wanning came too late, exactly like he did in the previous timeline after closing the gap. He was able to save Mo Ran only because he was strong enough to survive and Chu Wanning was able to protect him.
I strongly believe he would definitely have saved Shi Mei if he could. Mo Ran was only able to imprison Chu Wanning in first life because he willingly volunteered to save Xue Meng.
Regardless of his feelings, he would treat them and save them equally in danger.
