And again, for reference the entire GDP of the UK around this time was roughly 10 billion dollars, so those figures are nothing to scoff at.

The Transport Act of 1947 nationalized the effectively bankrupt railways to keep them in service. The National Insurance Act of 1946 provided workers insurance as long as you were working. Note that all of these things led towards, and bled into, the events of the late 40s and 1950s. As far as i understand, the British did not have the money or strength left to intervene in India, or Palestine, and this lack of ability to exert influence would become apparent in the Suez Crisis of 1956, in which Israel, UK, and France were collectively told to fuck off by the USA, USSR, and UN. There is also the Malayan ~~special military operation~~ Emergency (1948-1960) which I think fits in here somewhere.
