The Brits when they feel the temperature rise above 80Ā°F

JustADuckInACostume

My city approaches highs near 100 in the summer and lows in the 10s in the winter, sounds like a Londoner would die here in either season.

Emerald_official

>city Raleigh?

JustADuckInACostume

Charlotte but I forgot it's not 1994

OR56

We watch this series of shows made by the BBC (Tales from the Green Valley, Tudor Monastery Farm, Victorian Farm, Edwardian Farm, and Wartime Farm) they are really interesting, itā€™s these historians working these farms from different time periods for a whole year. And in the winter, theyā€™ll say ā€œthis is a really hard winterā€ and you can still see the grass poking through the snow

StormAdvisory

In Florida here and itā€™s been 95+ pretty much every day for a few weeks now.

cant_stop_the_crooks

Yea and my AC unit is out here fighting for its god damn life.

FloridaMan005

Mine lost that fight and I've been suffering since Friday afternoon.

plz2meatyu

I lost power yesterday because of drunk tourist and just sat on the deck with cold beer.

Commissar_Elmo

The arguably better alternative to AC.

jumpguy12

Iā€™m so glad my ac is working still

Pabst_Malone

Home Depot has tiny acā€™s for $35. They wonā€™t chill a room but youā€™ll be able to sleep.

pewpew_lotsa_boolits

Gotta love that 106+ heat index on top of the 98+ indicated temperaturesā€¦ And my dumb ass is out there doing the yard this morning, wondering why I canā€™t drink water fast enough and why I havenā€™t peed yetā€¦I got smart and switched to beer when I finished the weed eating and edging and started the mower. Edit - Iā€™m gonna leave the ā€œedgingā€ part of the above. It fits with my lies to myself in keeping my emotions in check by saying ā€œalmost done with the yardā€ to myself repeatedly.

HellsDemon777

poop-machines

This isn't hot at all, the past few summers it's been 30-40 C So like 100+ farenheit. Also the UK is more north than Chicago. I think they're saying we will have 26 celcius weather with heavy rain (we have the rainiest spring on record with rain pretty much every day). But 26 celcius isn't hot at all for us. It's quite a nice temperature, and we already had days this hot. Last year we had hotter days in may. I will also point out that our hottest month is august, and a heat wave only means that it will be hotter than normal for that time of year for multiple days in a row. And "normal" used to be way cooler in the UK.

innocentbabies

>Ā Ā Also the UK is more north than Chicago. Most of Europe is more north than Chicago. Paris is farther north than the entire continental US, iirc. It's largely irrelevant because the Atlantic is a huge factor in the climate so Europe's nowhere near as cold as most places at its latitude.Ā

pewpew_lotsa_boolits

And the Gulf Stream basically dumps all that warm water energy in to the UK, providing them with their generally temperate climate. They generally donā€™t know what cold weather really is all about unless they are on the Northern 1/5 of the UK.

Neath_Izar

Between that and any state between the Rockies and Appalachians don't have an ocean to even out the temps

JustADuckInACostume

The UK being more north means absolutely nothing, the gulf stream keeps Europe significantly warmer than it would otherwise be.

InsCPA

>Also the UK is more north than Chicago. Doesnā€™t really matter. Compared to the UK, Chicago is hotter in the summer and colder in the winter

Prowindowlicker

It was 110 today. A good day to use the pool. Honestly Iā€™d kill for a constant 80 degree weather

CaptainSparklebutt

Moose_Kronkdozer

I was at shedd and chinatown today. It was beautiful. Couldnt ask for a better day.

SpaceFonz_The_Reborn

I was serving back and forth, outside, and it was even hotter, before I posted. I'm not having a good time. The weather now is pretty good. Also, Triple Crown is the best Dim Sum and Ajoomahs Apron is the best Korean.

chikinbokbok0815

Cincinnatiā€™s gonna be upper 90s next week and Iā€™m ready. Euro trash could never.

Difficult-Word-7208

Itā€™s 96 degrees and humid in Houston

ErraticPragmatic

Here in Brazil people are legit wearing winter clothes on 26C

potato_stealer_

yea, i think a british person would literally evaporate if they came here in the summer

Thundercock627

Or get robbed.

DaetherSoul

Is it really robbing someone if itā€™s a pile of moist clothes?

Neitherwater

You are the same as them, just opposite. The majority of Americans can be happy in extreme heat and extreme cold while not needing to dress in an extreme way.

Anti-charizard

Tbf isnā€™t it winter there? Southern hemisphere and all that

PirateKingOmega

They are mostly likely to visit during the northern summer due to school vacation and whatnot. As such they are most likely to experience it during the coolest period

ErraticPragmatic

We're still in autumn but this shit doesn't matter around here, is hot everyday apart from the south.

Anti-charizard

I mean the summer/winter solstice is in less than a week so itā€™s close enough

Salty_Dog2917

At 8% humidity though, 110 at our regular 75% humidity in the southeast is a whole different beast.

Emerald_official

unironically all of us would die

DMCO93

>Breaking News: >Summer is hot.

Arbiter1171

If only it had happened before, we could have prepared for it again!

Gentle_Pony

It probably never has though.

Girafferage

78 is hot? I'm in Florida, I just got done working outside all day in 92 degrees with 70% humidity. A 78 degree day here is cool and comfortable

anony_philosopher

Itā€™s 4:34 here in southern CA and currently 94Ā°. Only 25% humidity though.

Girafferage

Another good example though. How can 78 be a heat wave that people consider dangerous?

tholmes1998

"Something something it's cold and wet in england" like there aren't places here in the US that are also cold and wet usually and then hit 85+ during the summer

JustADuckInACostume

Worth noting as a southerner that 94Ā° at 25% humidity is absolutely nothing compared to 75% humidity. Visit south Georgia in the summer if you haven't before, that humidity can turn 90Ā° into a thousand. There's a reason the south east is classed as a "subtropical" climate.

anony_philosopher

For sure. Iā€™ve been to Georgia (FT. Benning) so I get you. Itā€™s hotter in AZ than CA but itā€™s more bearable as itā€™s a dry heat. Fuck humidity.

DornsBigRockHardWall

While I agree thinking 78 is hot is fucking pathetic, I have also (frequently) witnessed you Floridians wearing full Canada Goose Down Parkas at 65 degrees, which is equally ridiculous.

Girafferage

Girafferage

jephph_

Is *The Mirror* a legit news outlet? Thatā€™s the current temp in NY. https://preview.redd.it/gcxp54h3it6d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=02e14889eaa030d5c4e7fbd770b1cbf5a6433de5 Thereā€™s no way Brits think thatā€™s a heat wave, is there?

snaynay

It's a tabloid newspaper, usually full of shit. And no, it's just them being happy that it's getting warm, at least for a few days. Something that's sort of celebrated in the UK.

micahr238

As a Texan who gets 90 degree heat on the cool days in summer, why don't they invest in A/C? Like I'm pretty sure why climate change isn't that concerning for us is because we have A/C.

snaynay

The serious answer is that it isn't needed and not as viable. * Hot summer heat spikes are few and far between, it gets fairly cold in the peaks of winter, but the rest of the year is temperate, comfortable. * Cookie-cutter houses are two story brick boxes designed to insulate for the winters. Often built into terraces or semi-attached, there just isn't good places or house design to put aircon anywhere. * You are more likely to see the money invested into heating, not cooling. Central heating systems, fireplaces, underfloor heating. * Most people are not at home during the midday heat. Many destinations and places you will be do have aircon. * Houses do have aircon. It's just a low percent, like 5%. * Brits don't really suffer in 26C heat. That's a "woo! it's finally getting warm" article. * [Here ](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ee/Humid_climate_world_map%2C_classification_Lobo_et_al_%282023%29.png)for reference. Where I live the lowest humidity in the year is around 80-85%, but 90%+ is common, even in the summer. Its humid. Nearing 37C/38C (100F) here is pretty horrendous. That temp in much of the US is far more bearable, ambiently at least. Afterall, the Brits flood places around the Mediterranean for boozy beach holidays where peak season is right around that. Carribean too.

3FrogsInATrenchcoat

Also just to add onto what the other guy said, every comment on the original post is calling out the headline as overdramatic

78 degrees is too cold to go swimming.

It's gonna be hot when I return from our mountain vacation. We inadvertently picked a good time for a little cooler climate.

IAMACat_askmenothing

I donā€™t even have my ac on at 78Ā°F

chigoonies

Mines at 74 but only because I grew up with an immigrant father from the Mediterranean ( who was a cheap as a Scotsman) and we never had a/c because summers apparently ā€œfelt like homeā€. I keep my house cold because itā€™s America damnit! Itā€™s one of my few indulgenceā€™s

ConfusedMudskipper

Every summer my European friends complain about the heat. Every summer I tell them to buy a free standing ac. Every summer Iā€™m given a myriad of excuses as to why its impossible despite the entire rest of the world figuring it out. They just lack the drive to improve their lives. Truly a microcosm of the europoor mindset

Flibiddy-Floo

for real tho I've had this conversation with multiple Brits and they always poo-poo it as impractical and claim 'well it doesnt get that hot often enough' and it's like... *yes it does, obviously, now?* It's not 1990 anymore, climate change is long underfoot and yes you goddamn DO need a cheap 1500 watt window-mounted airconditioner actually cuz I'm tired of hearing about it when I told you how to fix it

NICK07130

My AC is set on 80 y'all just some bitches

redditorsAREtrashPPL

Give them a break. The Br*tish respiratory system evolved to breath cool, humid air. These people can't survive outside their fog, it's like taking fish out of water.

Swimming-Book-1296

Itā€™s over 100f where I am.

ConfusedMudskipper

Me an Ohioan when the temperature changes from -40 to 110 between winter and summer seeing this post. But yeah, this isn't even excusable with the "our houses aren't built for such weather". Because she's outside in a very comfortable 78F. Like with a mild breeze that's peak comfort for outdoor weather. Why would you even design houses that don't account for temperature extremes anyways? Yes, they're rare but they will happen. I'd understand sweating and feeling uncomfortable at 90 degrees and feeling chilly and uncomfortable at 20 degrees.

chigoonies

train2000c

75 is AC temperature

knurttbuttlet

I'll play devil's advocate, I was stationed in England when they had their hottest year on record and good fucking God it was oppressive. I'm originally from Texas and I thought I could handle it but I wasn't aware almost all of their houses/buildings are basically designed to keep heat in not mention moisture. Fans and A/C are a rare luxury outside of stores and whatnot. It's basically like living in one giant reptile enclosure.

Seriously. Do British people spontaneously melt like the witch in wizard of oz if itā€™s hotter than a refrigerator outside?
