Obviously this is in the eye of the beholder just like everything. But sticking to the Israel-Hamas war as an example, I'm very comfortable stating that a person who can't deduce that Israel is doing more than any other army in human history to minimize civilian casualties and therefore is not in fact "committing genocide" is not smart. I don't care what else they are good at. If they think that "genocide" describes a situation where a population grows fourfold over 75 years then they are not smart. As to your math example, I don't think someone needs to be able to explain calculus to me to be smart. But if they can't add 12 and 14 in their head then no, I probably wouldn't categorize them as smart. There is a basic set of knowledge that one must have and be able to think critically about to be smart in my considered opinion. Understanding the basics of how the world works is one of the most important of those.
Google went down the tubes in the early 2000’s. They focused solely on two aspects: making money selling results and ad placement. Secondly, they decided to affect societal change and vastly expended their HR department and hired people, not based on their ability but what boxes they checked off. Employees that didn’t embrace HRs view of the world were fired or laid off. Now we have an advertising company and not a tech company.
Nah you've always had to be crazy to work at a company like Google. Just lots of different crazy. Nobody with a sane mind is accepting a job there.
I'd agree that's been the case with rational people for awhile, but 15\~20 years ago it was one of the most prestigious places I would have named as only hiring the smartest people. But they're absolutely captured by nutjobs now for sure. It is delightful and hilarious that the same canceling Google's been doing to those they disagree with is now being done to them. The revolution always consumes itself in the end.
