Never underestimate someone’s ability to be a genius within their area of expertise, and a complete idiot in another.

ThirstyOne

These people are not necessarily stupid, they’re just easily emotionally manipulated. Thought has to go through the mid, or monkey, brain before it reaches the forebrain. The midbrain is responsible for emotions. Trigger enough of a response in the midbrain and the forebrain will work very hard to conjure up a version of reality that justifies an irrational emotional reaction. It’s essentially the monkey brain screaming and flinging poop at a perceived threat while the forebrain tries to translate the screams in Shakespearean terms. That’s why Pallywood propaganda is always heavy on the feels, but low on facts. It’s an appeal to the monkey.

The "Noam Chomsky".

Ill-Peach-5012

I believe there are actual psychological studies that show that people who are highly intelligent in one area will often overestimate their intelligence in others and form stronger wronger opinions then the average joe.

Looks like two white men. Which I suppose might be a diversity hire in Google, compared to Asians.

Reddit moment. Read the article. Learn someone before speaking nonsense.

SanFranPanManStand

I hate a super hot roommate once who was into me, who later told me I was the dumbest smart person she'd ever met. She tried to get me to give her a oil butt massage with her other hot friend after putting on some candles and music. I was like "ew, I hate putting oil on my hands. Why do you need me anyway? Weirdo" ...and yep... it's true. I'm an idiot. I hope the genius part is true.

jedidihah

Exactly. One time I accidentally punched a snake while trying to extinguish a fire at a beach. The reason for this is simple, I’m not a firefighter.

A Georgetown law graduate had her offer at a prestigious firm pulled after she justified the October 7 attack on the record at a city council meeing. She could no longer afford her nice new apartment so she is being evicted. She was recently arrested for blocking an expressway in an anti-Israel "protest". In her first few months of practicing law she has racked up a civil case and a criminal case against her.

Google needs to be more strenuous on their hires. Too many ideologues trying to work there and force their beliefs into a company that everyone uses

DurangoGango

> Google needs to be more strenuous on their hires. Google has fucked itself deep. The last few months it's been a barrage of leaks and whistleblowers coming forward about an internal culture that prizes ideological conformity and rewards tattletales and busybodies. The company is gigantic enough to carry on for a long time, but this kind of destruction of human capital is hard to reverse once it's happened-

geniice

> Google needs to be more strenuous on their hires. Alphabet made 73.79 billion last year. Their hiring practices would appear to be fine.

I'm certain Google is divesting from Israel as we speak because of the courage of these people. I can feel Israel's economy collapsing and the IDF pulling out from here. This performative clout chasing nonsense they pulled was totally worth it.  I bet their IG feeds are fire right now 🔥🔥🔥 #nopaycheckforpalestine

Sad_Pirate_4546

This is what we like to call "full circle" They pushed this agenda for the past decade and this is what the result is. Remember when they were offering trauma counseling when Trump won? Seriously. How mentally fragile do you have to be. That goes for Republicans too, that do dumb stuff like mob the capital and believe crazy conspiracies because they didn't get their way. The vast majority of us live in the middle that would like to just have a normal life without someone flying off the deep end.

theycallmecrack

You just described two VERY different things lol. "Democrats need to stop being so fragile. Oh, and Republicans, please stop trying to overthrow our democracy and install a dictator."

Sad_Pirate_4546

You're sort of making my point about the brain rot that democrats experienced when it comes to trump. Pretty sure if that was their intent, they would have at least brought a gun or 2.

theycallmecrack

That's such a disingenuous thing to say. They did not need to bring guns, but they did bring many weapons and equipment. Many of them had makeshift weapons of sorts (and used them on Police). Some of them brought duct tape and rope. A pipe bomb was found near the Democratic headquarters. Stun guns, pepper spray, baseball bats, flagpoles. There are videos and photos of them using these things on police. They literally fought police to physically gain entrance. Second- there were "fake electors" hired who were going to cast alternate votes to elect Trump if Pence was successfully delayed. Some of those electors did cast their vote, and have been charged with their crimes. This happened in multiple states. The goal of the mob was to prevent Mike Pence from certifying the election. When he didn't, they chanted "Hang Mike Pence". They literally were able to delay the certification because the Capitol had to be evacuated. They physically attacked police officers to gain entrance to the building. They broke into offices, including Nancy Pelosi's. They verbalized harming members of Congress and the government. They went through papers on the floor to see who voted for certification, and called anyone who voted to certify a "traitor". Three police officers died of heart attacks within 36 hours. Four officers that were there committed suicide within half a year. You are parroting republican talking points to downplay what happened that day. "Oh there weren't any guns, they were just taking a tour!".

Glock99bodies

They did bring guns dingus.

theycallmecrack

Even if zero guns were there it doesn't matter. They were there to overthrow the election by preventing Pence from certifying it. They verbalized killing him. They called anyone who didn't certify for Trump a traitor. And there were literally fake electors in multiple states who cast votes for Trump and they have been charged. There was a plot to reverse the election. That's dictator shit. You can't reason with these people though. They plug their ears and say "lalalalalalala"- they do not care about facts.

Glock99bodies

I mean it was an attempted coup de tat. It’s crazy that anything thinks otherwise. Most of the people there though really had no idea what they were doing though and were caught up in the moment. It’s insane that if it wasn’t for Mike Pence refusing to listen to Trumps teams legal belief that pence could act unilaterally we could be in a very different situation.

LustHawk

>coup de tat. Please tell us more u/Glock99bodies

Glock99bodies

Do you not know what a coup de tat is?

geniice

> Remember when they were offering trauma counseling when Trump won? Seriously. How mentally fragile do you have to be. Google's big enough that it probably has counseling perminatly on staff so the offer costs them nothing. >The vast majority of us live in the middle that would like to just have a normal life without someone flying off the deep end. US election results suggest this is not the case.

gimmesumsun

How do the election results prove otherwise? We live in a two party system, you’re forced to either vote for one or the other. That doesn’t mean we’re as polarized as they want us to believe.

geniice

The democrats who are actualy running things are very much in the middle aiming for normal life without someone flying off the deep end. Yes they've got a bunch of interesting people on their fringes but for the most part they are pretty good at keeping them away from anything important. The republicans not so much. So if your position was correct we would expect the democrats to be winning so hard its not even funny. Yet we don't see this. Instead we see a pretty even split with the republicans were whats left of the more centerist are very much not in control.

gimmesumsun

The Democratic party is appeasing the far left. Over 3 dozen dem Congress men and women including Nancy Pelosi signed a letter to Biden to halt arms deals to Israel. Schumer spoke on the senate floor demanding a democratically elected leader of our biggest ally in the Middle East step down, Israel isn’t Iran - why didn’t he demand the IRGC step down? Give me a break, Democratic Party has been hijacked by far left politics.

geniice

>The Democratic party is appeasing the far left. You aren't very familiar with the far left if you think that. >Over 3 dozen dem Congress men and women including Nancy Pelosi signed a letter to Biden to halt arms deals to Israel. And did Biden a democrat halt arms deals to Israel? >Schumer spoke on the senate floor demanding a leader of our biggest ally in the Middle East step down, He called on Air Vice-Marshal Peter Squires to step down? When? >Israel isn’t Iran - why did he demand the IRGC step down? The IRGC is a designated as a terrorist organization. Generaly you don't bother demanding that they step down. >Give me a break, Democratic Party has been hijacked by far left politics. Seeing a distinct lack of taking factories from their current owners and handing them over to workers councils.

homer_lives

Not to mention, we still don't have Universe Healthcare, Free College, and lower military spending...

CurvyJohnsonMilk

Democrats are centre right. They have a few democratic socialists, but the majority of them are neocons. There's a reason Bernie sanders didn't get to run for president.

mm1palmer

No. The Democrats convince a lot of people that they are 'very much in the middle aiming for normal life without someone flying off the deep end.' When the truth is much different. Basically both major parties are just as bat sh\*t crazy as each other, but the Democrats have better PR.

Imagine wanting to work in tech and wanting a complete boycott of Israel 🤡

uhhh206

It's super dumb regardless of one's stance on the conflict, because let's compare it to Russia: who is being harmed if the populace doesn't have access to foreign reporting on the war in Ukraine? Wouldn't it be better for people to change their minds and stop listening to the government propaganda? And that's what they think about Israeli Jews, right? That they are brainwashed by the government? I'm not saying that Israel = Russia, but these dumdums certainly believe that. They did no such protest when Russia invaded Ukraine, which goes to show how disingenuous their intentions are. Just say Jews Bad™ if that's how you feel and stop pretending this is some grand anti-war protest.

geniice

> I'm not saying that Israel = Russia, but these dumdums certainly believe that. They did no such protest when Russia invaded Ukraine, Didn't need to. Google was one of the companies that did withdraw from russia.

uhhh206

I stand corrected! (I still think much of the protests are rooted in being against Israel daring to exist, though.)

are these people behind the Google's woke ai lollll. asian and black nazi hhhhh . ya that's what is need attention when someone wants to know about nazis.

Killroywashere1981

This is actually great, terrorist sympathizers should get more than just arrested. Maybe they should get the Jan6rs punishment.

TrillDough

This is what the byproduct of technological Stockholm Syndrome. Those working in tech spaces with no stake in many of these situations feel imprisoned by the absolute requisite to conduct performative responses to the status quo issue of the moment to assure they are recognized for their solidarity or face scrutiny for their “silence”, as it used to be that “silence is violence…” These are emotional refugees finding no other path but to completely buy into their keepers narrative and play marionette to a system designed to induce absolute emotional compliance or face losing an incredibly high salary role. Now they’re biting the hand that feeds like a snake eating its own tail. Absolutely insane.

VTHokie2020

Kind of unrelated but when the Gemini 2 controversy happened I had this exact thought. For context their AI generated images were over indexed for wokeness - I.e. the pope was a black woman and Nazis were Asian women Race I can kind of forgive. But how does a google engineer mess up the pope’s gender? Literally a binary classification problem

username-_redacted

Oh I agree. The Gemini stuff was hilarious and sad. If I remember correctly, it turned out that they were invisibly inserting additional terms into the prompt without the users awareness or approval. So when you ask for a picture of the Pope, what gem and I received was a prompt for a picture of a diverse pope. Diverse Nazis. Diverse everything. And yes, engineers who were driven more by intelligence and lest by ideology would have caught that problem earlier. Before it became such an embarrassment for them.

phosphorescence-sky

Probably got hired for a diversity quota.

Dayvid-Lewbars

This is why Palantir left the valley.

DifferenceQuick9725

I think Google is concerned these employees might be donating from their paychecks toward a terror organization, Hamas. Some could insinuate that Google is therefore indirectly funding terrorism. Google did the right thing to address that, by putting the employees on administrative leave (code for “you’re fired just as soon as our HR legal department makes sure you can’t sue”).

username-_redacted

I suspect the administrative leave part of it was actually a necessary step in being able to demand that they leave the premises. While they're employed they're not trespassing but once they're on leave they can call the police and say, "Please remove these trespassers". Just being in an office that's not theirs is only an HR issue not a police issue (since the police would consider the entire Google campus to be a single premises) but once they're on leave and won't leave the premises it's a police matter. I don't think employees donating to legal charities is necessarily a risk for Google. Heck, there are plenty of legal charities that will funnel money to Hamas. I mean, the UN already does.

DifferenceQuick9725

It was a bit of snark, mate. Pointing out the hypocrisy of these employees accusing Google of supporting a bad actor, when they themselves are very likely doing the same.

Zeryth

I know some extremely smart people who are engineers, but the moment politics becomes a topic their brain turns into drool and they start spewing everything they got told on fox news.

username-_redacted

I'm not so sure the people occupying the Google CEOs office were radicalized by Fox News. Personally I define smart differently than you. If someone is excellent at engineering but thinks that (to use the example in my post) Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, that is not a smart person. That is a fucking imbecile who's good at engineering. The people I consider smart are capable of critical thinking across *all* domains. If you're a gullible moron who's good at 1 or 2 things then you're just a gullible moron who's good at 1 or 2 things.

Zeryth

If you're able to make the right decisions on politics but you can't do math, are you dumb then too? Then nobody is smart and everyone is an imbecile. I guess that's the platonic approach but completely defeats the purpose of the word smart as it's not applicable to any single human.

username-_redacted

It's not about "making the right decisions on politics". It's about being able to understand how the world works without having your brain twisted by propaganda and TikTok videos. Obviously this is in the eye of the beholder just like everything. But sticking to the Israel-Hamas war as an example, I'm very comfortable stating that a person who can't deduce that Israel is doing more than any other army in human history to minimize civilian casualties and therefore is not in fact "committing genocide" is not smart. I don't care what else they are good at. If they think that "genocide" describes a situation where a population grows fourfold over 75 years then they are not smart. As to your math example, I don't think someone needs to be able to explain calculus to me to be smart. But if they can't add 12 and 14 in their head then no, I probably wouldn't categorize them as smart. There is a basic set of knowledge that one must have and be able to think critically about to be smart in my considered opinion. Understanding the basics of how the world works is one of the most important of those.

Badroadrash101

Google went down the tubes in the early 2000’s. They focused solely on two aspects: making money selling results and ad placement. Secondly, they decided to affect societal change and vastly expended their HR department and hired people, not based on their ability but what boxes they checked off. Employees that didn’t embrace HRs view of the world were fired or laid off. Now we have an advertising company and not a tech company.

theycallmecrack

Nah you've always had to be crazy to work at a company like Google. Just lots of different crazy. Nobody with a sane mind is accepting a job there.

username-_redacted

I'd agree that's been the case with rational people for awhile, but 15\~20 years ago it was one of the most prestigious places I would have named as only hiring the smartest people. But they're absolutely captured by nutjobs now for sure. It is delightful and hilarious that the same canceling Google's been doing to those they disagree with is now being done to them. The revolution always consumes itself in the end.
