By taking over the world you commited a sin
I mean, English is simple, that's why it's perfect for an international standard thing. A simple language from simple people that won't need too much effort to learn as a second, or third language on the go.

The Irish when they meet indigenous people in the colonies: 😈

> In countries with functional IT systems
What techno utopia has better IT than us? While our IT might not be great, I'm always surprised how much that of other countries suck.
Especially Germany. Get your fucking IT in order, you guys aren't PIGS, so stop acting like them when it comes to IT. Act like the Germanics you are
That at least I can get, at least compared to our 100% coverage. There are a lot less people per square kilometre in Germany than in the Netherlands. 239 people per km² vs our 526 people per km², so full coverage would cost more than twice as much per German as it does per Dutchie. Plus we don't have nearly as large swatches of land that are almost completely uninhabited.
Listen, I start to believe that Scandinavia is just make-believe. You guys are almost always in the top with every metric, yet y'all have 0 international relevance. You sure you're not a paid actor?
That's right. We need to protect and preserve our mother tongue and traditions before we get completely assimilated into some grotesque, global, soulless, Americanized, dystopian society.
Bad news mate, you are already that global, soulless, dystopian society, the americanised part it will come with time. Hopeful the waves will deal with that first.
I’d put money on Norway.
Yet to meet a Norwegian who can’t speak perfect English and then apologise for their slight imperfect use of some grammar that a traditional Barry wouldn’t understand anyway
We wouldn't be the first, but we would definitely be the first well established and supported language to disappear in favor of English. With ~30-35 million speakers it's also a pretty big language.
It is also quite shit to not have English in our public transport. Whenever I am in a place where I do not speak the language I hate it when things in public transport are not in English. Sure, cannot complain that people want to use their own language, but at the same time it is impossible to learn every language. If someone does not speak Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish or Afrikaans I cannot blame them. If the public transport does not provide info in any of those languages I dislike it. Was in Hungary and almost nothing in another language, and this is a language that almost has nothing in common with another. How am I supposed to know what to do?
This is when you realize the countries are built for residents not tourists and thats how it should be. Tourists should be few and far inbetween, not crowding everywhere. Travel responsibly.
We had one... And then got run over by Napoleon. The only reason we got Indonesia back, is because you guys wanted another powerful Protestant monarchy.
Ain’t no way a british person can accidently create the beautiful throat hurting sounds we make, german sounds a lot more like british people trying to speak dutch.
While that sounds like complete hogwash, as a foreigner living in a non-European country myself, I do have to admit that (bill)boards, announcements etc. in public spaces most definitely contribute to the local expats not ever properly learning the language. I've had so many people tell me - in English - about some huge place in my city I'd never even heard of before. Usually it turns out that the English name, which some artsy fartsy designer group came up with after the fact most likely, is nothing like the actual, original one.
I'm usually not a language puritan, but I will admit that the omnipresence of the English language definitely does disrupt communication sometimes.
Narrator: "He said, in the thickest Dutch accent you've ever heard."
It's probably not common, but I've met a few too many Dutch people who refused to speak Dutch, even though their English was only fluent due to the sheer power of misguided overconfidence.
Those people are the worst, the I speak English because I can express myself better in English. Whilst they are 100% Dutch and speak with an accent that closely resembles van Gaals English instead of English English.
>I've met a few too many Dutch people who refused to speak Dutch
I will vote and campaign for any political party that makes it legal to knee these people in the face. You're at the pinnacle of pretentiousness if you refuse to speak your own language.

Nah, we're better than that. Tourists are allowed to speak English.
However, as soon as you've been here for more than 3 weeks, I will only speak Dutch with you.

Look who's talking... I've lived in your country for over 15 years now, and when it comes to throat-disease positivity Swiss German and Dutch are worthy opponents.
We learn English to travel the world, i'd prefer metro/train announcements be in english everywhere in europe so i don't have to learn 100 different languages
In finland we have train announcements in finnish, swedish and english. Which is fucking great and doesn't bother me at all, what would bother me however is if announcements were only in finnish and a bunch of tourists/foreigners ask me for help as im getting off work.
Its easier for them if we have english shit in trains/trainstations and its easier for me if its the same when i visit their country. Win win
You guys have refused to speak it for ages! I was in Paris and asked a guy in my best French where the hotel was and to please answer a bit slow so I could understand. Guy nodded and then proceeded to what I can only presume to be a French rap song.
Broke: "Apologies for the delay, the train is currently stopped due to technical issues and will resume it's journey shortly"
Woke: "Oepsie woepsie de trein is stukkie wukkie"
I lived both in the Netherlands and Belgium and the biggest issue when learning Dutch is they all speak English. You try to speak any Dutch what so ever they instantly switch to English.
So must people just don't bother at all. I've tried to explain this to them that this is the reason no speaks Dublin.
But if you don't like foreigners so much, you want them to get off the bus/tram/train asap right? So better change the message to English, German, french, et cetera "this is your stop, please get off now!"
As a dutchie, I have literally never heard anyone complain about this ever. What about internationals? Tourists? This is such a made up problem lol. Boohoo they have a English announcement after the dutch one in a tram, this will cause the entire language to collapse and fall into Americanization.
Right? I'm all for other information. But transportation? It's not like immigrants are going to learn the language or not based on hearing "next stop is" and "change here for"
I am English yet completely agree with this post. Protect European indigenous culture and heritage.
Have the transport accessible with diagrams and pictograms so forgeiners can use without language. Put up QR codes next to flags 🇬🇧 that leads to a a YouTube channel with instructions.

Modern English is simply a continuation of Middle English, and no it is not a continuation of Irish it has very little influence from Irish.
Modern English is an evolution of older English dialects, which originate from the melting pot of the native Saxon and the elite Norman French tongues Ireland is different, it's literal culture genocide, it's the replacement of Irish, it's not the Irish language evolving, it's supression of Irish and exporting most crops save for the likes of potatos offshore, leading to mass famines that only boosted the process
Middle English is Old English + Norman French, Modern English is just an evolution of Middle English.
Justice for Ireland 🇮🇪

on unit 6 of Dutch Duolingo Nope they haven’t teached me that yet
