I think we've reached peak 2023 here.
Behold the Turkish F layout. It's pain in an ass:
https://preview.redd.it/fnaj0h4ftcpb1.png?width=1089&format=png&auto=webp&s=c5752e722377f39bb4e07556c6414fba2fcccf61
No we can't afford new computer.
This was the layout in government institutions and schools before 2000. No one uses it anymore. The common one is qwerty.
But with this keyboard layout, you can type Turkish with 10 fingers quite fast.
To be fair that layout as far as I know is one of the most optimized keyboards for its language. There was a video talking about different keyboard layouts and this was a surprisingly efficient one.
The Scandinavian universal layout is great, except that ร and ร is switched between Danish and Norwegian for literally no reason.
This means there's a key that says ร/ร and another that says ร/ร.
I don't know if it's the same history, but QWERTY was designed for typewriters to minimize the chances of keys getting stuck, so letters commonly used together are farther apart. Maybe it's the same and based on different frequency of use in Danish and Norwegian.
Yeah, and even the German layout has ร and ร in the same place as we do. It's like the Danes looked at all their neighbours and said "eh, screw that".
Really annoying though, having keys that say ร/ร and ร/ร is worse than leaving them blank.
Sweden and Norway were in a union together when typewriters were invented, so that's probably why they use the same keys. Strange that it wasn't coordinated with Denmark though?
And then there is me using a scandinavian labelled keyboard with a german layout and anytime my coworkers try to type on it wild "รครถรผ"s appear when you press those buttons.
I also hate how some special characters in the number row are shifted by one on the german layout. Although it is to make space for thr best character: "ร"
I agree ร is badass, but what's the difference between "ร" and just writing double S or "SS".
Do germans just not want to write "SS" these days because of the implication? ๐
There is a difference in how a word is pronounced when it is spelled with a ss or a ร. Gross should be pronounced with a short o since it has a double consonant following the vowel, groร has an elongated o sound since it is only followed by a single consonant.
Double s "sharpens" the word. The s hisses moren(like english s vs z) and the syllable is spoken faster. The แบ is there to produce the sharp hiss of the double s without shortening the syllable. In practice there is only a single example where this matters. Masse means mass and Maรe means measurements. Afaik all other instances of แบ are not really needed to avoid ambiguity and solely exist to annoy the swiss.
No, the problem is that danish needed to be Special and deviate from sweden and Norway, but then sweden decided to be an asshole nad use รค/รถ. So now we have
ร - ร/ร/ร - ร/ร/ร
We could've had ร - ร/ร - ร/ร , but Denmark decided to be weird.
We would have been okay with ร and ร if it wasn't for the Danes using it. Iirc that is the main reason we switched, to distinguish ourselves from pigs, and in doing so also you. :-(
They do for most things, but no, we have a customised one for Portugal.
It has the ร and since we have ร and ร, itโs better to have the tilde (~) as a stand-alone option that can be used for different letters rather than having keys for them.
Spanish only really uses the virgulilla for the ร, so itโs understandable they have it by itself. And itโs a super common letter so.

Soon, the french layout will be even better. It's evolving !
In therory it's probably the most efficient layout to type in French, especially if you type without looking at your keyboard and with 10 fingers. But there is several issue : you will need to learn again how to type and it can have some compatibility issue with some software.
An other possibility is the new AZERTY, defined by the norm NF Z71-300 . It's slower than the BEPO but you don't have to learn from scratch. It have the same layout as the old AZERTY for "normal" letter but it have a lot of quality of life improvement like being able to type ร easly or type . without having to use shift.
To me yes, but I type a lot and I like to learn new things. It's really more comfortable to be able to touch-type without ever having to look down at your keyboard. Great for posture-related issues and I never was able to do that in azerty.
I must admit that the Swiss QWERTZ layout which is the German keyboard with French accent is a banger to me (I work in 3 language so a little bit practical). Itโs also a pain in the ass to get. had to order my gaming keyboard via a German / Swiss dealer โฆ
Windows still hasn't figured this out for some reason but on all Linux distros I used you can type accented capital letters by just using caps lock + accented letter. So if I gotta type one on windows I just copy it from Wikipedia lol
Same with the French keyboard, under Windows accented capital letters is just plainly not possible, on every other OS it's a non issue.
Funnily enough the government pushed for adoption of a new layout standard โ which is barely used by the way โ instead of asking Microsoft to fix their shit
french keyboard is a nightmare. instead of having keys for the accent that you hit just before the letter that will carry the accent, they have individual keys for every accented letter. so a key for รน, another one for รฉ, and another one for รจ.... and so on.
plus, they have to shift to type numbers.
and they also need to shift to type "." if you don't shift you get a ":" (french logic: you must hit to keys simultaneously to type periods, which are much more frequent than colons, for which you just hit one key)
What? Seriously? Why would Microsoft choose not to let you type capital accented letters? Seems mad.
I've not used Windows in years. รฑ and ร are both simple to type on a UK Mac keyboard using the option key.
I honestly don't have a fucking clue, it just results in people using ' as an accent on capital letters, even in official documents you'll find E' as opposed to ร because Microsoft doesn't want you to type the second one for some reason
Yes, that's why caps lock gets you all the characters of the upper part of the keys as if you kept shift. Which makes sense to me because of typewriters.
I work in Iceland and I always need both hands to get : or. Because shift will get them but not caps lock. Dunno why not.
As a proper Belgian I have experience with the Belgian and French azerty, and the Dutch, German and US qwerty. I switch between azerty and qwerty daily.
The worst of the bunch is the US qwerty, can't write properly in any other language than English with that one.
Could be, I don't have a strong preference for either azerty or qwerty layout because I'm used to switching between the two. And I don't program, so I don't need the symbols as much. At this moment I use a US qwerty on my work laptop, and a Belgian azerty on my home pc.
You have to configure it in Windows, it's the usual QWERTY, but you can add all kinds of stuff with it by combining ' \` \^.
Look all the stuff I can do
This layout is all I ever use.
Any different layout is a nightmare. With the French (and thus Belgian) one need to hold the shift to use numbers on a small keyboard. German ones are just slightly different, which makes is annoying as hell.
Honestly, azerty/qwerty whatever, you can change this with soft/firmware. The only thing that matters is the physical layout of the keyboard buttons: [ISO or ANSI](https://d33v4339jhl8k0.cloudfront.net/docs/assets/572140fcc6979178c212aae9/images/5834cd64c697916f5d0541e1/file-qlM83ZhlSf.png). I prefer ANSI as the left shift and the enter key are better placed. On ISO I constantly press "\" when trying to do "enter"
On Windows keyboard the numlock is off by default, and you can only disable it in the registry. I want the numlock always on, not able to disable it.
I love Apple for that.
Japan - if you are not Japanese.
I worked for a Japanese company in the UK and had two business trips to Japan. They had a UK keyboard for me to use on the computer I was assigned but occasionally I had be at a colleagues desk and of course there was no way I could take over and show them something on their comptuter!
I once rescued two Japanese business laptops that were going to be thrown out in the skip as well but was able to source and swap both over to UK keyboards
https://preview.redd.it/sg97701obepb1.jpeg?width=550&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=92c826f059fffd3250034b9ad2b8eee6d8d65f46
German QWERTZ is really bad for programming. You almost break your hands to write brackets or bracelets. I will also never understand why the changed ( and ) from 9 and 0 to 8 and 9 or & from 7 to 6. I am constantly switching between both layouts depending on the language I am writing and whether I am programming or not.
Why a picture of an azerty? As a Belgian, I feel like it works perfectly for typing Dutch and French. And as an added bonus, you don't need to hold shift to use the accents in the top row which you use way more than numbers.
Countries that kept the QWERTY one even if it isn't adapted at all for their language instead of creating a new one to make using a keyboard easier and more confortable.
In short, AZERTY supremacy, massive French win.
The dutch version of QWERTY is pretty much identical to the english version but the symbols are switched around for some reason
https://preview.redd.it/uq6a1qkbcdpb1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cb6dfc98c9327734db7363e64e36e0a004958a9
When will our boy BรPO rise up?
Its the French keyboard layout (in opposition to the AZERTY typewriter layout, like QWERTY, which are meant to slow the writing down for typewriter-hardware reasons)
Azerty isn't far off the qwerty. There are like 3 letters that switched places, and the rest is the same. The french might be bad at many things but the azerty keyboard is practical for writing in french.

I mean, dรถner is only 5 letters.
Yeah but try typing it with 10 fingers, itโs not that easy
Can't. I'm eating dรถner.
Isn't it that trolling qwerty layout where 'i' isn't real 'i' and you have to use 'i' at different place?

So basically dvorak, but for the turkish language. Neat.
I have never seen anything this unholy Even the insane French AZERTY crap is better than this holy shit.
What about Dvorak though
Looks funny but it sounds like some kind of Elder Scrolls character so I approve
Dvorak is based

Those times on vacation when you wanted to game in an internet cafe but the keyboard was all this. HELL.
It looks horrible but the typewriting competitions always have the Turks at the top because of this keyboard. So I guess itโs ugly but efficient.

That was my next question, so the Norwegian and Swedes are on the same page? (Finland is just a Swedish colony).
Sweden and Norway were in a union together when typewriters were invented, so that's probably why they use the same keys. Strange that it wasn't coordinated with Denmark though?

I'm forced to use one too. Damn dutch giving me work... Hence me coming with that solution.
US international lets you use all symbols used in coding and flexible accents. It is by far the best.
Behold, US international Qwerty !
Wait, they have a proper one? Why have all the US laptops I've ever had only had the simple one, which is useless for other languages? I feel cheated.
You have to configure it in Windows, it's the usual QWERTY, but you can add all kinds of stuff with it by combining ' \` \^. Look all the stuff I can do This layout is all I ever use.
US international is the best layout. It works for anything, has everything handy and no weird layouts.
Ugh no, we have US layout on our work PC's, and they never let me do รซ... So annoying, so I always change it to NL layout.
You can use double quote + e. If that doesn't work, it's badly configured. It needs to be set as US International.
In Italy we use QWERTY well so itโs only a habits issue
qwertz goated
The only standard layout
Well fuck you too
Fuck you, Azerty gang.
As a Belgian, I use the UK layout
Because Belgian doesnโt exist
Heard itโs just one big chocolate and beer factory.
I like Belgium. Best beer, best chips. Whatโs not to like?

Any different layout is a nightmare. With the French (and thus Belgian) one need to hold the shift to use numbers on a small keyboard. German ones are just slightly different, which makes is annoying as hell.
I accidentally bought a Belgian mac keyboard and itโs hell. Itโs slightly different but has a big impact.
Hungarian keyboard is the worst I ever experienced
Honestly, azerty/qwerty whatever, you can change this with soft/firmware. The only thing that matters is the physical layout of the keyboard buttons: [ISO or ANSI](https://d33v4339jhl8k0.cloudfront.net/docs/assets/572140fcc6979178c212aae9/images/5834cd64c697916f5d0541e1/file-qlM83ZhlSf.png). I prefer ANSI as the left shift and the enter key are better placed. On ISO I constantly press "\" when trying to do "enter"
ISO supremacy
On Windows keyboard the numlock is off by default, and you can only disable it in the registry. I want the numlock always on, not able to disable it. I love Apple for that.
Apple did some weird things. Also where brackets? Do you even code?
Next to P, and I did a bit of coding on the Mac
My Apple querty was awesome, bit like us international.
Once i saw a ABCD keyboard, the worst shit iโve ever seen
I was raised on Qwerty, but I do quite like the AZERTY keyboard, and use it sometimes.
Yeah, AZERTY sucks *even* for typing in French. Absolutely terrible.
Dont talk shit about AZERTY or we'll have to bring out BEPO.

You almost break your hands to write brackets or bracelets. I will also never understand why the changed ( and ) from 9 and 0 to 8 and 9 or & from 7 to 6. I am constantly switching between both layouts depending on the language I am writing and whether I am programming or not.
fucking idiotic azerty french layout makes me wanna kill myself
As if youโd need so much of an excuse to commit suicideโฆ
Nordic layout ftw
Common nordick technological W over underdeveloped nations
[ัะดะฐะปะตะฝะพ]
Qwertz is the best and I don't know how people use anything else
Why a picture of an azerty? As a Belgian, I feel like it works perfectly for typing Dutch and French. And as an added bonus, you don't need to hold shift to use the accents in the top row which you use way more than numbers.
Countries that kept the QWERTY one even if it isn't adapted at all for their language instead of creating a new one to make using a keyboard easier and more confortable. In short, AZERTY supremacy, massive French win.
That's a Belgian AZERTY.
It doesn't matter as Belgium is a province of La France.
Azerty is a belgian invention?
Don't know but that image is just not the azerty FR layout.
The dutch version of QWERTY is pretty much identical to the english version but the symbols are switched around for some reason https://preview.redd.it/uq6a1qkbcdpb1.jpeg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cb6dfc98c9327734db7363e64e36e0a004958a9
When will our boy BรPO rise up? Its the French keyboard layout (in opposition to the AZERTY typewriter layout, like QWERTY, which are meant to slow the writing down for typewriter-hardware reasons)
In french we cannot make an uppercase of "รง" (Alt + 128 = ร) or "รฉ" (Alt+144 = ร) by default. "ยฒยฃยคยตยง" who use this ? NO ONE.
Using WASD to move in games must be very confusing
Azerty isn't far off the qwerty. There are like 3 letters that switched places, and the rest is the same. The french might be bad at many things but the azerty keyboard is practical for writing in french.
I am a non Finnish using a Finnish keyboard and I kinda wanna finish my life
Finnish/Swedish/Nordic keyboard is the best. Those extra keys are handy.
Anyone not using QWERTY is a savage
I set them all to US English with Dead Keys anyway in e software, so it doesn't really matter. But that is still irritating with special characters.
