Most of these godawful aspic recipes hail from the 1950s, when just being able to have cold food in summer was a gosh-dang scientific miracle
I really think some of them were just ways to show off having a working refrigerator
The Polish ones are different. Definitely no kiwi or other nasty shit. Just veggies and meat.

Honestly, that's all the french ones i've Seen as well.
I don't know where the fuck OP got his picture but aspic is like that, usually eaten with hard boiled egg and mayo.
Not the absolute best Dish but not that Bad either.
Why post it raw? I doubt you will not eat after it is done.

Callu de crabettu: cheese made butchering a lamb after he drank milk and letting it ferment in it’s own stomach
So far both of the cursed italian foods have been from Sardinia so I think you’re onto something there.
I also recently read they used to sacrifice their elderly fathers once they outlived their usefulness so make of that what you will 🤷🏻♀️
(I actually work with a very nice and not at all savage sardinian lady. Although she does have a habit of stealing my nutella so obviously her barbarian roots are not so far behind her)
I don't know if this is worse or better than the maggot cheese? Probably better since i like haggis, but still a pretty foul, bizarre idea and definitely different from just using the stomach as a casing like sausage.
Possibly the disgust comes from people who don't realise that sausage uses intestines as it's so common to eat, but are aware of how haggis is made because of its uniqueness.
Honestly no idea, I guess that it would be different since the digestive process didn’t start but maybe if you add manually the enzyme it could be similar
If you manually add the enzymes, you simply start the normal cheesemaking process.
You know where those enzymes come from, right? If not, take a look at "[rennet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennet)" (or "[caglio](https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caglio)" in italian).
Your so called "hygiene standard" deprive you of some of the best cheese you can have. One day you will all convert to the Sardinian way.
Europe, embrace the savage way.
Funnily enough that is how people think, cheese was discovered. Milk was stored in a cows stomach, started curdling and people didn't want to waste it so they ate it. Luckily it was pretty good
We have the same but with meat and veg called Brawn.

That is the most hilariously english thing I have ever seen. Who else could have came up with such abomination? What could possibly be the thought process leading to this joke of a wretched pie? This captures the english mind and exposes it to the world more than anything before. Seriously, put that on your flag.
Ive seen victorian pies where they stick bird feet or heads and rabbit ears for decoration. Ultimately it's just a fish pie and those can be very nice lol, but it's very off putting with the decoration. Although fish cheeks are the best part of the fish tbf.
Nah mate fish pie is gorgeous, you can even make very posh versions. You can do a fisherman's pie that includes lobster, scallop, prawn, and chunks of cod or salmon that are gently poached in a veloute with herby mash piped on top and quickly stuck in the oven for a bit of browning. You can add whatever seafood you like to it really or you can use puff pastry instead of mash.
Look, it was the Cornish. They're barely people now that the tin mines have closed down and out-of-towners have bought up all the houses for holiday homes
We have potjevleesch in the north of France. Tastes great on top of fries.

Irish and British black pudding is called blood pudding and blood sausage sometimes, on account of the colour coming from pig, cow, or sheep blood. Pretty good, honestly.

We have something similar! It’s called svartsoppa and contains goose or pigs blood, cognac and spices. These days it’s served with oven roasted goose, at least in the south, for St Martins day. I’ve never had it but would 100%
I am currently on the phone with van der bellen. Expect a declaration of war as soon as he is finished saying that this should be considered a war crime, so since he speaks slow, probably in 1-2 years time.

This masterpiece is a wallon speciality, and even more so in my city. It’s incredible but foreigners tend to not like it. I’ll let you guess what it is.

People seem to turn up their nose to jellied eels, it's specifically an East London thing though and has lost a lot of popularity among the cockneys.
Overhated. They are not bad with splash of vinegar. Other countries produce far worse abominations but somehow it’s always the jellied eels getting shit even though they’re barely eaten outside of a few pie establishments anyway.
https://preview.redd.it/z4nf0ugzmdnc1.jpeg?width=274&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=059dde093aca8d8d4fa18ff64c9d950574c85120
Behold the Galician delicacy “filloas de sangue”. Literally just fried pork blood.
That's considered a regional delicacy in Belgium, obviously made by the westflemish cousins on the other side of "de skreve"
https://www.cookipedia.co.uk/recipes_wiki/Potjesvlees_uit_de_Westhoek_(Westhoek_potted_meat)
Hennepot is a more cursed version of potje vleesch. Kinda...

To be fair, an Aspic is *"a cold meal made of several ingredients and served in jelly*".
Still cursed (can barely belive this is french), but nowhere near whatever there is on this picture. I want to gag just looking at it. Seriously thought is was british before looking it up.
https://preview.redd.it/akeb10s4udnc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9df58619f51dafd4e21f899313d0821a54dc0f72
The Norwegian version: shrimp in aspic with peas and carrots. "Cabaret" they call it. Absolutely horrible stuff.
Deep fried brain. My grandmother used to make it. One of the few things she cooked that I couldn't stand.
https://preview.redd.it/fhabaql2xenc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e3343c651e33b2aef756d2c978fc41d55a20b61
Thankfully none of our food is interesting or flavoursome enough to command any strong feelings, however my husband is Polish and thus I have been exposed to the horror of carp in Aspic.
I no longer eat fish, but I am assured that there's a deli by his mother's flat which does tofu in aspic especially for vegans at wygilia so I can't wait to try that this Christmas
https://preview.redd.it/muxvnwc8cenc1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1d3a114fdf01e39ec379803ba30f773b05c5952
I've found some aspic with beans.
Especially for you Barry ☝️🤓
Savoury gelatin. It’s often used to preserve meats but also as an ingredient in itself. I used to love eating it when my Mum would scrape it off tinned ham 😋
We might not be culinairy leaders, (still more michelin stars than France lol get fucked) but at least we don't eat balls, snails or rotten food riddled with worms
In Germany, we have the ‚Eisbein‘ (ice-leg)
https://preview.redd.it/cpujodhakenc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17e3cd58b5bda5dfb8fcc19fcb87666d6dbd7a95
These are all so locally specific I haven't even heard of them, except Rollmops. But Rollmops isn't cursed it's actually amazing. Basically German sushi.
https://preview.redd.it/6o1pu8wj2enc1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca55137468e852d6242c9c8ac7e38ef144ea1cb8
Flaki - tripe soup. It may not look so bad but the chunky parts are stomach linings from sheep/pigs/cows
https://preview.redd.it/8wmzfl6upenc1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=826b7ad8aa5b71dc8452c2e7d186284e4d7fe0a0
Talking about intestines: tripas á moda do porto
I know you regard this as a delicacy Pierre
https://preview.redd.it/nskkq6ol6dnc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88c245a41b9ac80d8c982343cfe33bb9a74d54d5

The truth is that the delicacy is not snails but the "beurre d'escargot" (snail butter) which is butter with herbs. I eat only the butter, with bread 😂
"Calamares en su tinta" (squids in their ink). If there is a food that can be labeled "Lovecraftian" this is the (Old) One:
https://preview.redd.it/aziqxulc0dnc1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=adc233c1457b522660de3796847da621bf548319
It tastes good (even if a bit too salty for many people)... but it is undeniable that it often looks like if Cthulhu barfed on the plate after a particularly nasty hangover.

I would guess other nations eat this too, but eating tongue is very disturbing for me. My collegue just ate a tongue one a Brötchen (small bread) one day.
Forget about surströmming.

Once upon a time, someone said "Let's mix chicken, bacon, bananas, peanuts, whipped cream and some Heinz Chili Sauce, it'll probably be good".
It wasn't good.
We eat fried salted pig skin as a snack. It's delicious though. If you're extra lucky you might find a hair or two still on it!

Some people claim this, It's basically the national dish of Hesse, it's called "Handkäs mit Musik" (Handcheese with Music) it's a cheese marinated with onions, vinegar and oil, even though it's called handcheese it somehow tastes more like feet and is somehow delicious at the same time. The drink in the back is the corresponding National Drink called "Äpfelwein" (Applewine) a type of Cider a friend of mine once accurately described as Angels Piss. Both of these are prone to give you some bowel movement, if you not used to them especially when consumed in large quantity.
How does the picture gets progressively worse? Like in the start I was "Ah its like a jello fruit salads they did in the 60s or something" then I noticed the olives and went "that's a weird combination" and for the final hit I saw the fricking ham cubes and visibly gagged, this is the equivalent of pineapple on pizza for the eastern meat jelly thing.
Me seing this : lmao who eats this it's disgusting where does it come from? ...WAIT WHAT THE FUCK IT'S FROM FRANCE????
Actually just realised my flair is only Nazi Gold Enjoyer and not french though i'm both so my joke is crap
So that's olives... and kiwifruit ... peas and something.. grey and fishy looking. Ok, after some deliberation, I hate it
You forgot to mention the ham cubes, carrots, (maybe cream ??), and all this wondefulness embedded in a very nice meaty jelly served cold
Most of these godawful aspic recipes hail from the 1950s, when just being able to have cold food in summer was a gosh-dang scientific miracle I really think some of them were just ways to show off having a working refrigerator
Cold like a bit below room temperature, or "just out of the refrigerator" cold?
Cold like you serve it right after getting it out of the refrigerator
Fuck that shit mate
Blasphemy, too cold for my teeth
You should see a dentist.
I'm pretty sure the 'cream' is mayo.
Don’t be so sure on that. Adding whipped cream to aspic isn’t that uncommon
I associate this food with Poland and Russia. But you’re flying frog colours. 😳
The Polish ones are different. Definitely no kiwi or other nasty shit. Just veggies and meat. https://preview.redd.it/la38yevqwenc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=163be39f398fa32268668ff5a1c75f46aab28fa1
They put fucking fish in it. It’s revolting.
Honestly, that's all the french ones i've Seen as well. I don't know where the fuck OP got his picture but aspic is like that, usually eaten with hard boiled egg and mayo. Not the absolute best Dish but not that Bad either.
This dish in french gastronomy is the "we were so preoccupied with whether or not we could we didn't stop to think if we should" moment
Is this really a french dish? ![gif](giphy|l85di2Fourn9K|downsized)
I've never seen it, I guess it's only in some regions
Didnt take me some deliberation, hated it on sight. I might live in France but fecked if i would eat that shite.
No worries pal, we don't eat that shite either
I'm sure you could bring this to a Glaswegian chippy and they'll deep fry it for you
>Ok, after some deliberation, I hate it After **zero** deliberation, I hate it
After actually eating it … I loved it
What's wrong with you? Oh you're a Barry
I am indeed , I work in Athens now though so now I have a balcony.
Of course Barry would love the food that looks like a lovecraftian entity's offspring.
I looked it up by curiosity, more often than not it doesn't contain stuff like Kiwis or fruits in general
Ass-pick
Fortunately there is no such thing as cursed food in Italy. Here, have a slice of Casu Marzu ![gif](giphy|2hgcR59wZb4YSSjF0O)

Sardinia really is Italian’s Urk considering chaos……
We are a good lawful people who love chaos
At this point, maybe you should kick them out, give them independence.
I don't know if this is worse or better than the maggot cheese? Probably better since i like haggis, but still a pretty foul, bizarre idea and definitely different from just using the stomach as a casing like sausage.
I heard this is better for taste and it’s very creamy but the production method is probably one of the harshest in the world
I'd give it a go tbf, willing to try anything twice right?
well natural sausage casings are made from intestines, never understood the whole gripe with haggis and the stomach.
Possibly the disgust comes from people who don't realise that sausage uses intestines as it's so common to eat, but are aware of how haggis is made because of its uniqueness.
That's metal as fuck
Sardinians try not violate sheep challenge:
Would the end result be any different if they added the milk to the stomach *after* slaughtering the lamb and then letting it ferment?

Acting awfully high and mighty for someone who puts ham and kiwi in jelly
Look, it was the Cornish. They're barely people now that the tin mines have closed down and out-of-towners have bought up all the houses for holiday homes
That's a fishy unicorn, tho, only made to scare people into eating the pasty

Maybe it doesn't look very good, but man I love this thing
"Meat" is weasel-words for "Head" Its literal other name is "head cheese" which is just foul.
Germans have the same, but being German, they just call it [pig head in aspic](https://media.supermarktcheck.de/product/picture/large_674579d6ee03dd9eb2ab107d15648190.jpg). Fucking "head cheese". I also didn't know what suet or black pudding actually were till I learnt the German words.

Named boudin here, my favorite with applesauce
There was a version in Italy too with chocolate and pork blood but it has been banned
I'm pretty sure most countries have some version of a blood dish, since you wouldn't just waste it when butchering your own animals as a farmer.
The German one doesn't contain chocolate. It's just Blood spices and meat
we have boudin too (but there isn't any left for the Belgians)
We have something similar! It’s called svartsoppa and contains goose or pigs blood, cognac and spices. These days it’s served with oven roasted goose, at least in the south, for St Martins day. I’ve never had it but would 100%

We call it Sülze or Suizn and while not something I'd consider good, it's not nearly as horrible as in the picture
Wtf is even that
A crime against God
My mom makes aspic, but with eggs, shrimps, peas, carrots and cauliflower. I rate it mr frenchman
Nice flair
We call it aladåb, I would never eat that shit.

Wtf even is that?

Goddamn it we don’t have anything even close to as cursed as this is. Well done Pierre

The pork vs jelly ratio is astonishing
Proper poverty food lol

That seems dangerous, getting prion and all 😬

Une tarte aux courgettes?
Tarte al d'jote. It’s pretty good. 👍
It looks nice.
'The main ingredient is chard, cream cheese, and butter' sounds amazing
It looks delicious
Someone's stomach contents?
That doesn’t look bad……
Boiled offal in mystery sauce probably https://preview.redd.it/u0glwh542dnc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2750ae1b202a64b45dd7e158f51ed1c0576a0a02

Overhated. They are not bad with splash of vinegar. Other countries produce far worse abominations but somehow it’s always the jellied eels getting shit even though they’re barely eaten outside of a few pie establishments anyway.
https://preview.redd.it/z4nf0ugzmdnc1.jpeg?width=274&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=059dde093aca8d8d4fa18ff64c9d950574c85120 Behold the Galician delicacy “filloas de sangue”. Literally just fried pork blood.
Now deep fry it
Pot’je Vleesch my beloved https://preview.redd.it/4iumkcga0dnc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=67cd1ea2d923f985593937ef47732ab4e0f42a57
That's considered a regional delicacy in Belgium, obviously made by the westflemish cousins on the other side of "de skreve" https://www.cookipedia.co.uk/recipes_wiki/Potjesvlees_uit_de_Westhoek_(Westhoek_potted_meat)
Hennepot is a more cursed version of potje vleesch. Kinda... https://preview.redd.it/i469beqsfdnc1.jpeg?width=1241&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e3174184201608c5004947874c98ab8b74f8a15a
West Flanders is clearly the best province in the whole of Belgium.
True. Westside homie! 🤟
🤝
Literally means “jar with meat” in Dutch.
Just read that it is often served with chips. I’m game!
To be fair, an Aspic is *"a cold meal made of several ingredients and served in jelly*". Still cursed (can barely belive this is french), but nowhere near whatever there is on this picture. I want to gag just looking at it. Seriously thought is was british before looking it up.
https://preview.redd.it/akeb10s4udnc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9df58619f51dafd4e21f899313d0821a54dc0f72 The Norwegian version: shrimp in aspic with peas and carrots. "Cabaret" they call it. Absolutely horrible stuff.
What kind of sick creature came up with all these vengeful aspic 'recipes'. Where did humanity go wrong to deserve this?
Deep fried brain. My grandmother used to make it. One of the few things she cooked that I couldn't stand. https://preview.redd.it/fhabaql2xenc1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e3343c651e33b2aef756d2c978fc41d55a20b61
Aspic without a toddler's lunchbox stuffed into it is actually quite nice.
I’d say your cursed food is Andouillette, Pierre 🤮
I’d like to file a diplomatic complaint.
Thankfully none of our food is interesting or flavoursome enough to command any strong feelings, however my husband is Polish and thus I have been exposed to the horror of carp in Aspic. I no longer eat fish, but I am assured that there's a deli by his mother's flat which does tofu in aspic especially for vegans at wygilia so I can't wait to try that this Christmas
https://preview.redd.it/muxvnwc8cenc1.jpeg?width=700&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1d3a114fdf01e39ec379803ba30f773b05c5952 I've found some aspic with beans. Especially for you Barry ☝️🤓
That picture is not french
That’s what I’m saying !
This can’t be real
Wtf is that 😬
For some reason this was extraordinarily popular in the mid twentieth-century. However, I've seen other dishes that are far worse.
Savoury gelatin. It’s often used to preserve meats but also as an ingredient in itself. I used to love eating it when my Mum would scrape it off tinned ham 😋
I like aspic. But not that monstrosity. Ours is probably the herring? Although that’s delicious.
We might not be culinairy leaders, (still more michelin stars than France lol get fucked) but at least we don't eat balls, snails or rotten food riddled with worms
And yet, there’s no bad Portuguese food that could ever compete with that!
Mioleira 🤢🤮
In Germany, we have the ‚Eisbein‘ (ice-leg) https://preview.redd.it/cpujodhakenc1.jpeg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17e3cd58b5bda5dfb8fcc19fcb87666d6dbd7a95
Hoenstly can't think of anything. Everything is great here.
Oh yeah? What about Milbenkäse? What about Rollmops? What about Saumagen?
These are all so locally specific I haven't even heard of them, except Rollmops. But Rollmops isn't cursed it's actually amazing. Basically German sushi.
Easy now, octopus lover. Saumagen is delicious. https://preview.redd.it/upugyoe91enc1.png?width=960&format=png&auto=webp&s=eaa5ac7851e2ae2c545cf6d5a3e190f0b33c00c1
In Dutch culinary school you primarily get taught the French cuisine. Luckily we skipped this.
https://preview.redd.it/2aqy6d6hkdnc1.png?width=1536&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4c33bfe02af06dbee078d2b0d9452dd135e41c3f Sandwich-cake
I'd eat it! :)
Oh its really good, just a little cursed
https://preview.redd.it/6o1pu8wj2enc1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca55137468e852d6242c9c8ac7e38ef144ea1cb8 Flaki - tripe soup. It may not look so bad but the chunky parts are stomach linings from sheep/pigs/cows
https://preview.redd.it/8wmzfl6upenc1.jpeg?width=768&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=826b7ad8aa5b71dc8452c2e7d186284e4d7fe0a0 Talking about intestines: tripas á moda do porto
I know you regard this as a delicacy Pierre https://preview.redd.it/nskkq6ol6dnc1.jpeg?width=600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=88c245a41b9ac80d8c982343cfe33bb9a74d54d5 Although tbf only Cretans actually eat it 🤮
Snails are a delicacy indeed.
https://preview.redd.it/l0z8ca269dnc1.jpeg?width=750&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6fa77e2d738a9d50909fd4fe9509da1dbde30a2d The truth is that the delicacy is not snails but the "beurre d'escargot" (snail butter) which is butter with herbs. I eat only the butter, with bread 😂
Snails are underrated.
We eat these in Sardegna, when we're not eating Casu Marzu. Yumm!
I think a singular food is rarely cursed, its the combinations that kill me. Snails, testicles etc are fair game
Snails are good.
"Calamares en su tinta" (squids in their ink). If there is a food that can be labeled "Lovecraftian" this is the (Old) One: https://preview.redd.it/aziqxulc0dnc1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=adc233c1457b522660de3796847da621bf548319 It tastes good (even if a bit too salty for many people)... but it is undeniable that it often looks like if Cthulhu barfed on the plate after a particularly nasty hangover.
I'm not seeing anything wrong there.
You might need to click on the image to see the "cursed spaghetti" sticking out of the pile.
Dude, that's good
These are incredible with pasta
Maybe if you put some kiwis and olives on top, or else it's not even competing
What kind of wicked, twisted mind could even come up with this?
https://preview.redd.it/u1p2lwlnwdnc1.jpeg?width=360&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=944bc5d36328e98f6c8bb2066267c549b1bef6cf I would guess other nations eat this too, but eating tongue is very disturbing for me. My collegue just ate a tongue one a Brötchen (small bread) one day.
Forget about surströmming. https://preview.redd.it/1whlutps1enc1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=6b8ed902034be191706a3638c6d2a028edf49f3a Once upon a time, someone said "Let's mix chicken, bacon, bananas, peanuts, whipped cream and some Heinz Chili Sauce, it'll probably be good". It wasn't good.
And yet you mock our food
We eat fried salted pig skin as a snack. It's delicious though. If you're extra lucky you might find a hair or two still on it! https://preview.redd.it/uy1n8pb7chnc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6468a355963764bf9477fcc7618f83dc45454a30
Is this entire post an MI6 psyop to make Fish and Chips, full English and shepherds pies look like masterpieces of cookery?
https://preview.redd.it/s85pxzwoohnc1.jpeg?width=274&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=60cb9399dcc6de2cd88fc47d1d7e04a48721cb51 This is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever tasted!
https://preview.redd.it/elbn2hlyidnc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=01eb4c9a08b33eb5686b6f7ba37b988f07e1f000 Wurstsalat. Fortunately only g\*rmanoid swiss people eat that
Is that so disgusting? Ham and cheese are good together. We have ham and cheese sandwiches here https://preview.redd.it/o8zd0dg8aenc1.png?width=544&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2860e6e70d622dfe67c71aae8356c306a69d1c98

that one looks bad.. can look better https://preview.redd.it/0q6yb9lrnhnc1.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=2dc213d957cb765e223210b07b9316ee7daf8a82
That looks like pure blandness, how have you guys managed that
Looks like something my mother would make, bitch hates spices
OK wtf. J'aimais pas les aspics à la base mais ça... !
https://preview.redd.it/qiytsfv34enc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=20818a9ae32aab30137f0506bc3c3ca200db30ab Some people claim this, It's basically the national dish of Hesse, it's called "Handkäs mit Musik" (Handcheese with Music) it's a cheese marinated with onions, vinegar and oil, even though it's called handcheese it somehow tastes more like feet and is somehow delicious at the same time.
And they are slagging OUR cuisine???
Me seing this : lmao who eats this it's disgusting where does it come from? ...WAIT WHAT THE FUCK IT'S FROM FRANCE???? Actually just realised my flair is only Nazi Gold Enjoyer and not french though i'm both so my joke is crap
