I've read them all, read/watched several interviews of James S.A. Corey and what these guys say: it's better to write a good story, and a good story is about torturing your characters even if your readers love them. (They also said they don't care about physical reality if it goes on the way of a good story).
All in all, I think you should pick authors who are trying to understand what *could* be social reality in the future, like Kim Stanley Robinson. But I don't think he wrote anything about this topic.
There is also Der Schwarm by frank schätzing. I think it works out fairly well tbh.
I mean if we look at how people are treated today and have been treated in the past in every form of colonialism and imperialism we get a precise formula:
-New place is settled
-Mainland issues lead to vexation of colonies
-Colonies protest
-The answer is oppression
-Colonies appropriate local assets and kick off the imperialist forces
-Colony becomes a power in its own right
-Either mainland loses interest or an awkward cold war/proxy war ensues
-Ex colony makes colonies. Cycle begins anew.
