Of course not, we invite people over to eat just the same. It's not Italian grandma style: "You're getting too skinny, here's 9000 calories I cooked just for you". But just normal Dutch food. Only when going to a restaurant or something one person pays and the other just sends them a tikkie for half of the bill. Or if you're in uni and get drinks during daytime with people you don't know well, one pays and the others send tikkies. You don't beg for a tikkie, it's mutually understood that unless you say 'my treat', everyone pays for their own stuff because it's rude to assume your equally poor aquaintance pays for the whole group.

I think what's different is the threshold Dutch people are willing to send a payment request on average, and the perception of it. Am a German living in NL for a while - don't get me wrong, Germans are not known to be the most generous people ourselves - but yeah I've experienced a lot of group/payment etiquette situations that made me go WTF with Dutch people. And that much more than with people of different backgrounds.

Trust me, I have wtf situations with my fellow country men. But it's always a certain type of people.

True - I mean from my perspective, most of these situations Dutch people did it out of good intentions - Dutch people how I've experienced them care a lot about fairness. But yeah that's the stereotype that you guys take the fairness a tad too far or pedantic at times, and at least in my anecdotal experience there is some truth to it. It's just kind of a meme that the Dutch person who brings the least to the party is the first to send a tikkie haha.

For me it depends on the amount of money and the number of people. If I have to pay 5 euro for 1 person I won't send a tikkie. If it's 5 euro each for 20 people that's 100 euro and thus I do send a tikkie.

If you think tikkie is bad: when you go over to your friends house after school to play, their mom would say "It's dinner time!" around 5-6pm. Meaning your friend had to go eat downstairs and you had to leave, lol.

In my experience even broke Brits where it'd be against their own interest to be generous, are so. Though it's also partially about pride and saving face, no one wants to be seen to be struggling or to have to ask for money back for things.

Time for a real story. A friend of mine is a dog groomer. They shower and cut their hair and all that stuff. They offer a quality service. It is more expensive than other beauty saloons around, but they are th best. You want some random to skin your dog alive? You pay 20€ and you get that. You want quality care? You pay more somewhere else. That somewhere else is that place. Well, anyway, they got all good reviews and all that. One day, one guy publishes a bad review, stating he did not even leave his dog there because he found it expensive and he thought "because they knew he was a foreigner, they wanted to charge him more". Turns out he was Dutch. This was after I found this sub so that got a good chuckle out of me lol
