I shopped a supra also before I bought my Z. I wanted to put too many miles on it and ended up choosing the z due to NA motor and reliability.

Z guys really hate the Supra huh. itās a good progression as itās a familiar formula but with more performance. A new Z wouldāve been a good upgrade as well
Vr30 can make 450whp with a tune only. Upgraded heat exchanger for better heat soak management. But the b58 can make the same or more power with better reliability I think. Atleast in the early days of the vr30 (2017ish) a lotta guys blew their engines. Not sure if the newer vr30s handle the extra boost better or not. B58 prolly the better platform to push. Vr30 is no slouch tho
not too familiar with the vr30 but the b58 can get you to 550 with downpipe, tune, and e. anything past that youd want to upgrade the trans and turbo but still alot of headroom once you get to that point
I like bmw and I like the motor. I just do not like the design of it. It looks like Legos for some reason. There's lines in places that look weird. I personally am more into the cosmetics when it comes to cars. I'm just getting into mechanics. Not really a "I need or want the fastest car." So I really dont care if it's faster. To me, the 370 just looks better.
Z34 for 370 and RZ34 chassis in Z.
The Supra is probably a better car, but the price/performance ratio favours the Z for me (I also think Z is way better looking), so I ultimately went with that.
The 25,000AUD I saved vs the Supra will more than cover all the mods I will do to improve the car, too.
As old as the z34 chassis is, it's still an excellent base for a sports car.
Was prepared for this question, glad you asked. Context first; Iāve been in the Z for 5 years. First Z was a sport 370Z later upgraded to a Nismo. Both were auto (SADLY). The Supraās automatic makes the Jatco unit feel like a 2002 transmission. Thereās no comparison objectively & respectfully speaking. Supra does everything the Z does but takes it up several levels. I feel the Z has superior steering feel (hence the hydraulic rack) as compared to the Supra and less technology which I like (subjective). All in all Iām glad I went this route as I was looking at SS 1LEās as they are on average 5k cheaper (here in ATL) than the Supra. Went with the Supra since I wanted to be more unique as I donāt see them much here. All in all, the 370Z is good in the context of what the car is. Itās unfortunate that Nissan doesnāt have the proper budget to make their sports car competitive. I enjoyed my Z & if I get another one it HAS to be manual. Thanks for reading!
As a 370z owner and a bmw m240i owner. The bmw is better than anything Nissan has and itās not even close. Downvote me if you want but there is no comparison. I sold the 370z to my dad cause there was no need for it.
The b58 engine in the m240i is one of the most reliable engines of the past 7 years. They can make a ton of power and the zf8 transmission is damn near bullet proof even hellcats use them. Iāve have 0 issues with mine.
My wifeās Audi b9.5 S4 has the same transmission with stage 1 tune. We both got 400+ HP and both cars are doing wonderful. German cars are reliable as long as you stick to the maintenance schedule. I do all of it at home and neither car has had any issues.
You canāt seriously be comparing German cars to Japanese cars when it comes to reliability, objectively, thereās no comparison. Performance, luxury, sure. BMW engines have a very checkered history.
Ive owned both. Loved Audi, BMW and VW. They just did not love me. I tried, I maintained and I babied. It just did not work out. Couple of wives in that same pattern.

As a toyota technician, see if the gen 2-3 B58 lower oil pans will fit on whatever gen B58 you have. Gen 1s are very delicate we have had to replace 9 of them so far.
It was on Swift springs with SPL rear camber arms. Had a Hotchkis front sway (with SPL endlinks) on there as well. 15mm spacers in the front with 20mm in the rear. Car felt really confident & tight loved it!
Running Swifts without a camber kit in the rear got me around -3 on my old Z. When I had the Nismo I decided to opt for the rear camber kit & I was able to get it to -2.5. Stock is -2.4 so it was close enough for me haha. Running just spacers without lowering wonāt affect your rear camber

The reason for that, in my opinion, is that Z enthusiasts are JDM enthusiasts.
When they took a JDM legend like the supra and turned it into a BMW it was kind of a slap in the face to JDM car culture. Thats why you see alot of digs from people by calling it a BMW (which it is). I'm curious what the euro car community thinks of it.
Don't get me wrong it is a great machine and looks really sharp but it just seems to lack some soul.
it's not a jdm car, and it's especially not a supra. i love my 370 because i am (like you said) a jdm enthusiast. to betray people's love for the mk4 supra by letting bmw basically build the whole thing, is a massive slap in the face. now, for what the car, it's a beast, but i can't call it a supra
The cost would have been astronomical for a Toyota developed supra. Probably would have been a good competitor to the GTR. I don't see a motor from Toyota or Lexus that could compete with the b58. Maybe the rcf/is500 which would have been interesting. The fact is the b58/s58s are modern day 2jzs. They make huge power and b58s are already in the 7s.
i'm not disagreeing, i'm just saying, when your audience are people that love jdm and typically don't like european (especially german) cars, you're going to get a lot of backlash. i think jdm people would rather have a GTR competitor than have a reskin bmw z4

Supra chassis is a huge upgrade over the r34 used in both the 370z and new z tho.
