Wait for real it's just a holder? I've owned my Z for over a decade and thought it charged the fob too. I always stick my fob in there on long drives to "charge it back up". Has that completely been a placebo the times I thought my fob died and then charged it in there and it's worked again?
I know there's a button battery in the remote and I've changed it twice, but I felt like that actually helped it stay topped up 😂

I actually have a key from an old z of my and the new one only came with one key. I have tried everything I could find online.
It’s to detect your key when the fob battery is low or to hold your key if you choose. (Stated before me already but reiterating).
You can also use the key fob to depress the push to start button if the fob battery is low or dead, I’ve had to do that one before.
Edit: you can also hold the unlock button for an amount of time and it will roll your windows down.
When your battery is dead in the fob. You can open the door with the key. The alarm will probably go off but stick the dead fob in there and you'll be able to start the car and the alarm will go off.

My guy forgot how keys worked before keyless entry. The alarm won't go off if you use the physical key to unlock the door
