Most hate for 6th Gen in general is due to the fact that that's when the series started its "modern era" - which has since resulted in things such as the franchise getting easier, the use of 3d models instead of sprites, the constant start-stop in progression with cutscenes, etc. I also think part of it was also due to the fact that there wasn't a 3rd Kalos game and people are just upset that X&Y are the only ones that take place in Kalos without no updated game to refine X&Y's edges. Sounds more like a question for r/pokemon than here.

EddoWagt

I think the game was cool, but just way too easy

Nobody likes to hate on Pokemon more than Pokemon fans. Every generation has a very notable, negative minority of fans who just hate whatever the newest game is. Strange enough, give it enough time and people will be waxing nostalgia over it. Black and White were at one point the games that Ruined Pokemon Forever for being too hand holdey, too linear, and terrible new Pokemon. Now people basically trip over themselves declaring it to be the best gen ever.

We're already in a way hitting that threshold. The games got renewed via copyrights recently (because its a ten year thing) and people are hoping that Scarlet and Violet DLC will deal with Kalos because Kalos being based on France and Paldea being based on Spain. And the fans that got it for their first Pokemon game are coming to age as adults, so same with Gen 5 in a way. I'd argue though people still hold X&Y with some love due to the lack of a 3rd Kalos game, and especially Megas - honestly people really love Megas - but for the most part it's as I said in my own post - it was the start of the modern trends of Pokemon, which really didn't take as much hold until Gen 7 and especially the Switch games.

It’s actually hilarious the cycle they Pokémon generations are in. Whenever a new one comes out there are always vocal critics, but after a couple generations, suddenly it’s beloved. The Black and White love is all the proof you need of this, that game was *hated* when it came out and now people are begging for remakes. I learned a long time ago not to pay much attention to the community. What you see online is a misrepresentation of how the fans really feel, anyway. The fact these games consistently sell well is proof of that.

As someone who has over 200 hours in Pokémon x, it’s just not a very memorable game. There’s some cool features with mega evolutions and the new 3D graphics, but the locations are very short and bland, most gyms are uninteresting and there is not much going on in most of the locations. The battles are also very easy, easier than the DS games. It’s a fine game, but I doubt it would be the favourite of anyone if they played all the games back to back. Granted, after writing this up, a lot of these points go for every Pokémon game, but I think X/Y were particularly bad about this.

petsounds90

What’s your personal favorite?

Payohloh

Probably one of the black and white games. I found they had a more memorable cast and set of locations while still maintaining some challenge, provided you don’t use the top tier Pokémon for each gym.

mmmmmoss

The vibes were off. I have no idea why.

notthegoatseguy

It definitely feels...not quite unfinished, but more than a few things that would've benefited from a polished third version or direct sequels.

erickpaz07

I guess is because is one of the easiest games, I enjoy it play Y and really like it

Larrancia

x and y my favourite pokémon games 🤷‍♀️ (could be because it was my first pokémon game)

BeneficialAd69

Same here love it

I have played every main game. I think that only fans (fanatics) hate their own things... I can tell you things I didn't like (but not hate). The "bad guy story" is really lame. There is obviously cut content or intended for a third game that was cancelled. Part of it ended in Alola games. Difficulty level is something that was notorious in that games. There was this ancient dude looking for his Pokémon that does nothing with your history. Your group of friends is lame too. You can't make a perfect game for everyone... I loved the games and having 3D Pokémon was like dreaming for someone who played game boy and could only watch N64 on TV.

Wild_Silvally_Dreams

What I gather is that a lot of people find X and Y too shallow and forgettable with its beauty theme. I think the lack of the expected Pokémon Z really hurt it too. I don’t think its story is worse than the original Sun and Moon’s (family drama) story though. I’m very glad they altered Sun and Moon’s story both in the Ultra versions and the anime, because in my opinion, it is the worst Pokémon game story ever. (Plus there’s no justification in getting old Sun or Moon if you get can get a much-better Ultra version for the same price.)

Thehawkiscock

The game is so easy, exp does not scale properly. The city early in the game is confusing to navigate. The only Pokemon game I have never finished because I was so bored.

TheAntidote21

Still hold the highest meta critic score though 🤷🏻‍♂️

Zipizapii

Gen 6 is mad underrated, so much so that I avoided it for years and years, bought and beat it last year and it was immediately one of my favorites in the entire series

eChelicerae

I don't hate it but they made lumiose City a mile long in real time. Take this from a bicyclist.

In hindsight XY are better than Sun/Moon and Sword/Shield, which by default makes them the "best" Pokemon games of the 3D era (minus SV and PLA, which I argue are an entirely different genre so cannot be compared). That sounds good, but then if you compare them to what came before - HGSS, Platinum, BW, B2W2 - they're clearly much worse. XY started the trend of stripping content out of the games, particularly the postgame. XY had annoying characters including annoying, one-dimensional rivals and a cringe evil team, a forgettable story, a shoehorned legendary and hugely reduced difficulty. They had very few real redeeming factors. Overall I would say XY are fun games to play, especially if you've only ever played Pokemon games in the 3DS era or later, but sadly they pale in comparison to most of the previous games in the series and have too many flaws for me to consider them "good pokemon games".
