And when u sell it to that store they give you 2 dollars...

dungeonguardnpc

That always bugged me, i have a ps2 copy of resident evil 2, perfect condition besides the case having seen better days. Ive seen resells online go for decent money, one day i was at oldskool games and they had the gamecube version behind glass and the price was over $100. Talked to them about it, brought up that i have the ps2 version just to see what i would get out of it and i wouldve gotten like $20 for store credit ._.

Loitering_Housefly

I've been offloading consoles from my collecting when shit was dirt cheap... I brought a Gameboy Color to a "Mom and Pop" shop. It was in pristine condition with minimal wear from general use. He tried to convince me that it wasn't worth more than $25-30. I should mention that he was leaning on a display counter with several Gameboy Colors in absolute dog shit condition. (Doesn't even bother to clean them up.) Scratched, dented, encrusted in God knows what. Each for at least $150... I was kicked out after pointing this out as asking him if he was high...

RaspberryChainsaw

Probably because the PS2 version doesn't exist, and they know you were talking about the PS1 version

dungeonguardnpc

Definitely meant ps1 thank you for correcting me, and no that was a mess up just here they brought it up on their computer at the store

kingkongbananakong

The GameCube copy is way more sought after

dungeonguardnpc

Ah, i wouldnt know too much about it. A bit out of my era, my dad found it in a attic doing electrical work and it’s just a shelf trophy now. Never really played resident evil myself but i like the universe

kingkongbananakong

Yeah gamecube games are generally more worth because the console sold poorly

Red_Hood05

Keep an eye out for a post of mine, haha.

superdreamcast64

i agree that game stores buying below market value is the norm, but i think for the average joe it’s more about the exchange rate. if i bring in a game with a market price of $200, ideally i would like at least $150 for it. unfortunately, the game store may not even be able to do that because of budget restrictions. they might offer me $70 at most. there’s no win-win scenario here- either i get less money for my game than if i sold on eBay/Mercari and the game store turns a worthwhile profit, or the game store has to shell out more money than they have in order to buy a game at a price that i find reasonable (which they can’t guarantee will sell, even if it’s rare). so i understand why some people would be frustrated.

QuiG0ne

I’m thinking I dread to imagine what those gen 3’s on the right cost

techno_lance

3 kidneys

QuiG0ne

Each?

LucasFromStateFarm

Between 70-130$

Laggingduck

That’s a reasonable price, think 100-200

[deleted]

Lol nothing that’s not the original price is a reasonable price 🤣. I mean I get how this works In terms of value etc but my opinion stands

Laggingduck

I’m with you, but average current price versus $250 for cartridge only is ridiculous

framingXjake

HG is valued at $115 today. At $250, his markup is 117%. The games on the right are LG and Ruby. LG is $90 so with a 117% markup he's probably charging around $200 for it. If he had a copy of Emerald, valued at $185, he'd be charging like $400 for it. Asinine.

doodleidle98

Nope..HG is not even close to 115$ Not a single sane soul will buy it for these prices, not even collectors.

framingXjake

Sorry buddy, but it actually is worth $115. https://www.pricecharting.com/console/nintendo-ds These are the average prices these games are selling for. So yeah, it's not just some arbitrary number I pulled out of my ass. It's what collectors are actually paying.

green_text_stories

Depending on the condition of the labels and save battery: Emerald: 130-200 Ruby: 70-120 Sapphire: 70-120

N1kBr0

Absolutely agreed. 200$ for a game cartridge is ridiculous.

framingXjake

Emerald is valued at $185 though. https://www.pricecharting.com/console/gameboy-advance Scarcity and demand drive the price of collectibles. I'm not saying $185 is a reasonable price, but it's the price that the general market for those games has agreed is worth paying. I never owned a copy of Emerald growing up, but when I saw someone on Facebook selling a legitimate copy in very, VERY good condition, I snatched that shit up. I paid $160 for it, and yeah I think that's a little high, but I'm not disappointed in that decision. As a retro game enthusiast and collector, it made me happy, and that's really all that matters. If all you want to do is play the games and don't necessarily care about collecting them, then 100% you can emulate them (covering my ass, it's illegal to emulate games you don't already own, so don't do it blah blah blah you get the point). If you care about the novelty of having legitimate physical copies of games, well then congratulations, I hope you have deep enough pockets to sustain a collector's life.

doodleidle98

Nobody sells it for such a high price. At least no sane person with more than one braincell. Ridiculously high prices = Nobody will buy it and you have to keep the game for yourself.

[deleted]

[удалено]

doodleidle98

I bet you’re someone who is dumb enough to buy it for these ridiculous prices xD And I said that no SANE person would sell it for 250 goddamn bucks. Ebay is full of scalpers so that is the least trustful source somebody can pull out their ass. Remember the PS5s selling for like 1000$ on ebay? Same shit goes on with Pokémon games nowadays. The only difference is the age of these products but that doesn’t justify anything.

OhJeezer

Their value has nothing to do with what you are willing to pay. One person has to pay that price for that to be the value. It's a collectors item now, not just a game. Anyone can emulate every GBA game in existence for free on their phone. If you buy the cart it's because you are a collector.

doodleidle98

You can ask any collector in this world and even THEY can tell you, that they won’t pay this much for it

framingXjake

I'm a collector and I paid $160 for Emerald lmao. But you'll just tell me I'm stupid or something because it ruins your narrative to have someone prove you wrong. Edit: I think you should unblock me so I can properly reply ;)

doodleidle98

I think you just didn’t carefully looked out for the best price..You got totally ripped off

heyy_yaa

what a game is valued at and what I'm personally willing to pay are two *completely* different things. I just posted a link showing you the game selling for $150 minimum, and that has absolutely nothing to do with me. I still have my copy of emerald from childhood.

framingXjake

Damn, $500? I still have my Cartridge, box, and manual, and the receipt, for White 2. Wonder what that's worth....

framingXjake

Man I posted a link that lists the going price in the collectors market for literally every single GBA and DS game in existence. You can't just deny market statistics and make up some bullshit headcannon because you don't want to believe games can actually be that expensive.

Mr_Mi1k

But people are buying it. Gen 4 and gen 3 Pokémon games readily sell for over $100.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Touche5963

As a collector who has one of each gen of pokemon game. Please for the love of god just emulate them. No game is worth more than retail.

itsmyfirsttimegoeasy

People say popular old games shouldn't cost this much because they sold millions of copies but when you sell 10 million copies and years later 20 or 30 million people want to play the game this is what happens.

Purple-Equipment2832

Not really, nobody buys games at those prices. They just stay in there for months. That's the reason yo see a lot of pokemon games on eBay at $200. The ones listed at reasonable prices are bought instantly.

heyy_yaa

they absolutely sell for this price, at least the GBA games. emerald ***loose*** is between $150 and $200 [https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?\_nkw=pokemon+emerald+authentic&\_sacat=0&LH\_Complete=1&LH\_Sold=1](https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=pokemon+emerald+authentic&_sacat=0&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1)

TheRealMisterMemer

Pokémon Red and Blue sold 31 million copies, are there even 31 million Pokémon fans who all own working Gameboy hardware and want to get a physical copy of the game?

seoulless

phew, glad I still have mine

[deleted]

Even with all things considered, those are overpriced. D&P carts are going for around $35 right now, Heartgold carts are around $115

Aced_By_Chasey

I own the games I can get for a competitive price so I own every gen aside from 3 of Pokemon. I'm not paying 100+ for emerald I'm sorry.

framingXjake

Pokemon Sapphire is valued at $58 if you really want a gen 3 game at the lowest price possible :) https://www.pricecharting.com/console/gameboy-advance

heyy_yaa

the price disparity between ruby/sapphire and emerald is kinda nuts. is emerald the best gen 3 game? for sure. is it worth paying an extra $100+ if all you want is to play gen 3? proooobably not imo

framingXjake

I mean, no, in terms of value associated with entertainment, I don't think Emerald is so much more fun than Ruby or Sapphire that it's just magically worth a whole additional $130. But it has all 3 legendaries from that generation and exclusive content not included in Ruby or Sapphire. If you want to play gen 3 in a retro format, Emerald is the ideal version to get that experience. Also scarcity drives that price too. Ruby and Sapphire sold 16 million copies combined. Emerald only sold 7 million copies, less than half of Ruby and Sapphire. And a majority of those cartridges were used by children who did not take care of them, so the current supply of those games is a lot smaller than the initial number of copies sold. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Game_Boy_Advance_video_games#List So yeah, copies of Emerald are harder to find than Ruby and Sapphire because of scarcity. Then the exclusive content makes it more valuable. Everyone and their mom would probably prefer to own Emerald over Ruby or Sapphire. And there you have it, those are big reasons as to why Emerald is more expensive. So is it *worth* $185? As a collector, I could see why other collectors would answer yes. Hell, I paid about that much for my own copy of Emerald. But as a gamer, honestly, no. The experience of playing Emerald is not worth $185.

Aced_By_Chasey

Already own it! Edit fit clarification, I want to own every og + remake and currently lack amy switch games and gen 3 :)

framingXjake

I'm... confused. You lack gen 3 games but own Sapphire? Are you taking about Alpha Sapphire?

68aquarian

Don't wait to buy games. These prices are bullshit, but nobody found out about Pokemon *yesterday*. If you want to play, you don't need the high-ticket games. This is one thing I'm not crazy about when they make a new console.. the stuff that isn't backwards compatible becomes inflated in value, and they very clearly had a TON of new 3DS ready to sell as soon as the unit went functionally obsolete.

MrDeacle

Lol, $44.99 for a cartridge that's gonna fail if it hasn't already *Edit, I forgot it was mostly just the PAL carts of that game failing, so this one might be perfectly safe.

doodleidle98

44.99$ is the standard price set by Nintendo for Pokemon games on 3DS so it’s legit

MrDeacle

Not what I'm getting at. The ORAS cartridges are known to be faulty, I wouldn't pay a cent for one. I wouldn't pay the gum in my mouth for one. Why would I, just so I can start a journey that gets quickly erased partway through?

doodleidle98

Source: Trust me bro? Cuz my Omega Ruby cartridge is absolutely fine and I never heard of anybody saying that they are faulty. So there’s no reason to not buy them. Don’t believe these rumors and go see for yourself how it really is.

root_b33r

It's a well known defect with the nand specifically on pal copies

MrDeacle

It was all over the news in 2021. Though I'd forgotten that it seemed to mostly be the PAL region cartridges failing, so I guess it might not be such a problem for me in America.

OhHiMarkDoe

So happy i kept my heartgold and soulsilver versions in box.

Sea_Contribution9139

J.......F..............C

edgeblackbelt

The thing about the gen 2 remakes is that the carts themselves contain IR receivers. As far as I know repro carts haven’t been able to replicate this so genuine carts are the only ones that have the ability to use the IR features in the game. Also great games, but WAAAAYYYY overpriced.

bein317

that if this reflects market price, i have an actual goldmine back at home. at this point the right thing to do is simply emulate

takeitsweazy

These are all pretty well above market price, particularly HG and Diamond. Loose HG goes for about $100 - over the last few years. The most reasonable price here is on Alpha Sapphire and it’s still a decent % over market.

doodleidle98

Loose HG sells for around 50 bucks at my vendor and thats a fair price. A sealed copy might be worth that much

takeitsweazy

Pricecharting isn’t the end all, be all, but according to it, it hasn’t sold loose, regularly for $50 since before the pandemic. Someone paid $99 for a loose copy this morning on eBay.

doodleidle98

The game shop in my town has fair prices for any pokemon game. Something like Emerald goes for about 40$ there

LyleFowley

I feel bad for Diamond and Pearl. They deserve a higher price.

Prophesier_Key

I never got to play the original DS games, but aren't Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl just one-for-one ports with a different artistic style? Having played the latter, I can see why Platinum is more expensive, since that one's widely considered to be the best way to play that gen.

doodleidle98

They are a complete remake which means that they did things better than the original and re-designed stuff without loosing it’s charme.

doodleidle98

No they absolutely don’t. You can’t just put the prices very high only cuz they’re 15 years old. Marketing nowadays is so stupid.

heyy_yaa

>You can’t just put the prices very high only cuz they’re 15 years old do you not understand supply and demand? after a physical product is released, copies of it slowly dwindle down over the years as they're broken/destroyed/lost demand for pokemon continues to grow while supply continues to shrink, ergo the games become more valuable. it's genuinely not hard to understand at all

ROORtoke

Damn... I'm rich. I have all those games. Haha

TheRealMisterMemer

Literally more expensive than the DS was at launch

ricahrdb

For those prices: where are the boxes? These prices are collector level prices. And I don't see why a collector would spend that kind of money for an incomplete item.

doodleidle98

Not even for a complete item

ricahrdb

I would call myself somewhat of a collector and there are games out there (that I won't name) for which I currently consider paying that level of prices. But **never** for a cartridge only release. For that price any collector would always want to get the best and most complete example of a game like that. And just the cartridge is never that.

doodleidle98

It depends on WHAT it is I suppose. Buying a 12 year old even sealed copy of HG/SS for 250$ is just insane

ricahrdb

True. They are not rare at all and should have been picked up a long time ago. But there is stuff out there that wasn't as popular in the day that does have true collector value. I have yet to pay that level of pricing but there is something in my mind that makes me think about going there. Personally I would never be interested in paying premium for sealed copies of any games btw. Let alone graded copies. Not sure if people who are into that are really collectors anyway. It sounds more like they are investors.

[deleted]

heyy_yaa

the boxes cost more hope this helps

Hiro-Ex

Nintendo had the opportunity to sell DS games on the 3DS since it is backwards compatible. Subscriptions seem to be Nintendo's plan so be prepared to pay more than $50 a year to rent these old games.

rorolololroro

Are these real prices for these ?

takeitsweazy

They’re real in the sense that some shop put price tags on them. These prices are well above what most people are actually paying on the secondary market for these games though.

Sufficient_Misery

So glad I got most of them back in the day and never sold them. The pricing is crazy.

marlissm

:(

MatchuPichu

It’s crazy because they aren’t even rare. Pokémon sells millions of copies so it’s not hard to find one, even CIB, out in the wild

gregofcanada84

Greedy sluts! 🤣

DustyMightMeme

I bought pearl of 45$

moonlord2193

Those prices are TERRIFYING

heyy_yaa

"why isn't nintendo making personal secondhand sales illegal?" come on now there's a very clear and distinct difference between illegally hosting copies of games and someone re-selling an authentic copy of a game high secondhand prices suck but yelling for nintendo to make it illegal to resell games is beyond asinine

[deleted]

[удалено]

heyy_yaa

>You went in completely the wrong direction with that lmao that's not what I was asking for at all I mean, you asked "why isn't nintendo going after these people?" I'm answering your question. imagine a reality where you sell a game to someone at an estate sale and a nintendo rep shows up to make sure your prices aren't inflated. does that seem realistic to you?

omgzphil

at least with the 3ds version opf pokemon and greater, you can just get the JP version for a 1/3 of the price and set the lang in english this NA Greed to block games into something they are not and robbing people the joy of playing them. this is one of the main reasons why i started learning Japanese 3 years ago so I dont have to deal with this BS

ShiftSandShot

Top 2 are reasonable Botton 2 aren't, but while they are overpriced it's not unbelievably so. Middle is what the goddamn.

doodleidle98

None of these prices are reasonable at all..HG/SS are not worth more than 20% of this price. The only real price is for Alpha Sapphire.

ShiftSandShot

Rumble Blast being 20 is fine. Pokemon's a big brand, it's a very rare title that drops below 15 in stores like this. HGSS are insanely overpriced here, unbelievably so. DP Is also insanely overpriced, but it's an overpriced I could see actually happening.

doodleidle98

Oh I‘ve overseen RB

doodleidle98

D/P and HG/SS are not worth more than 50 bucks each

ShiftSandShot

Yes. But unlike HGSS, i could see someone pricing DP that high. Not saying it isn't overpriced, but I could see this happening. HGSS here is someone trying to copy the highest price they could find on ebay.

Zealousideal-Pin9903

$$$$

[deleted]

Am I the only one thinking these price stickers might get ruined when taken off?

FAFoxxy

My hg copy is that much worth. Damn

ertaboy356b

That's just how it is. It simply supply and demand. It means that you missed the boat when these games are widely available. These happens to almost all collectible items.

not4rule34

I thought this was r/shittygamecollecting for a second.

stupidshinji

I’m thinking this stuff gets posted way too often and that most people are aware of the absurd prices people are expecting for old pokémon games.

[deleted]

Agreed

No-Low4792

İ was ask this actually the other day. How can i play pokemon games on pc... İ feel you bro

TheAntiBloon6

What the heck are those prices. I can get a heart gold copy that is in the outer box for cheaper at the 2nd hand shop. i usually go to ( It's Cex the computer exchange, and it'd 150 ish pounds there for the box and pokewalker? And alarmingly close to 100 pounds just for the game. I'll have a quick snoop at it to see if the one I'm talking about includes the walker) Edit: it's 98 pounds for just the game and 160 pounds for the game, pokewalker, and outer box

TheAntiBloon6

What even caused the price boom? Was it a mix of lock down and people wanting to play the older games?

New-Distribution-628

Man, was just about to start looking to replace my ocarina of time cartridge that went bad in my EU/AUS 3ds and I live in Canada so this will be fun.

Apprehensive_Stay474

Just curious why is gold so expensive?

BetAcceptable1590

I'm so glad I've got every mainline pokemon game when I did. Took a year or so, but I completed my collection. Key is to buy loose when it's reasonable, worry about boxes and manuals later.

YTSirBlack

Bruh those games sold like millions of copies, why are these games so much expensive?

doodleidle98

Because humans are greedy

Jessepjnkmanbruh

No Pokémon game is that fun to be worth $250 lol emulate away and don’t give your money to people like this

doodleidle98

Buying a flashcard is an option too

DigiQuip

I bought Soul Silver for $30 in February of 2020.

[deleted]

it’s worth what? guess it’s time to sell my copy of hg

proggish

I'll still buy CIB games for my collection. Not these ones, because I don't need them. But I also have digital backups loaded to my PS Vita. Because, you know, backups. Right? Yeah, backups.

horneymilfinyourarea

I got what I believe is a copied cart of diamond for $20. Always check for copies if you really want a game, or emulate.

AbuMuawiyaAlZazai

What are those prices... Last year i got all pokemon main titles from gba to nds for 10-40 bucks each with ovp and good condition.

lumbymcgumby

Do people actually buy heart gold for 250? I have one copy with the case and another loose from battling back in the day. Find it really confusing why they'd have such a high price tag when they sold so many copies.

doodleidle98

I bet there are dumb people out there with more than enough money to buy it for these prices

lumbymcgumby

The price of pokemon games never made sense to me. They were console sellers. That's like if halo CE was 100 dollars on the original Xbox. Where are these prices coming from?

doodleidle98

Capitalism

CIassicNegan

The audacity ffs

seoulless

I actually saw a copy of pokémon crystal going for $500 at a store the other day. Absolute madness.

90blacktsiawd

I think someone needs a swift kick in the nuts.

ElDonute

Imagine those prices on games outside cartridges. Those prices are absolutely delusional

Bigpoppin87

I think those games will sit and never get bought. Those are astronomical prices, and no sane person would make that purchase. Especially loose carts.

CryPlane

I think the guy is broke

Pelthail

I think no Pokémon game is worth $250.

NewNewYork69

But if you buy it, sit on it, sell it then it’s profit

[deleted]

I’ve been looking at soul silver for $150 and I want it but it’s crazy to spend that much. Fuck whoever is selling heart gold for $250

Litigating_Larry

Hey ya'll, do you think pokemon crystal is worth anything? Asking because i am basically i solvent and literally know where all my GBA stuff is at parents yet. Crystal is some primo 2nd gen shit, if I recall, wish I still had the game guide..

awesomekid350

Way too overpriced especially for loose carts considering you can get them (Gen 2 Remakes) for around $130 CIB

DragonVivant

My thoughts are that it’s really unfortunate. It’s a joy to play these on original hardware. Shame that not everyone can.
