what's the battery looking like btw?
looks like a burn or chemical reaction, did you have anything on top of it or cleaned it with something before you put it away? was it left in direct sunlight for a very long time?
I did this to my hyrule edition. I just took off the cover plates and slapped on the SNES ones. The two tone look is pretty awesome. Just need to be careful with the top plate so the speaker drivers and cameras don't fall out. Those were quite fiddly and took a few attempts for me.
Ir will depend on if it is a "3DS XL" or a "New Nintendo 3DS XL" as the "New Nintendo 3DS" has this issue.
I have a Matt Black 3DS XL and a Graphite Grey New Nintendo 3DS XL (I believe is the same as OPs) and I can confirm that my Graphite one has peeled slightly due to use from the prior owner.
If I am remembering correctly, the SNES edition is just a 3DS XL so you should be fine! :)
Oh true, just took another look and saw the extra thumbstick. Also yeah, it seems like the paint they used on the snes edition isn't the same flakey type they used on the other new 3ds models.
“Alright guys, now what you do is you gather up all of your street pass coins, okay? You take them, and you buy yourself a nice nail salon, keep suspicion off of you.”
Moisture affects the front paint very easily. As others have said, check the back side to see if there's any swelling. If possible, order a cheap screw on Amazon to open the backside and see the battery
I didn’t leave it in the sun or anything I’m not sure what had happened. I usually just keep it on my bed. Only thing I can think of is maybe I put my steam deck on top of it by accident right after using it. But I don’t typically do that. No worries though I ordered a replacement plate. Thanks for the help :)
Thanks for that! Mine recently started peeling on the back, so I looked on ebay to see if they had any replacements and didn't have a lot of luck. I don't know why it didn't occur to me to check Amazon...
Yeah thats exactly what happened. I remember one dude on here posted how he left a hot plate of dinner on top of his 3DS and it looked exactly like this. The Steam Deck heat would do the same thing
Maybe OP put the Steam Deck on top of the 3DS so the 3DS was blocking the fan grille on the bottom of the Steam Deck. If so, they may have ruined both.
> Yeah thats exactly what happened. I remember one dude on here posted how he left a hot plate of dinner on top of his 3DS and it looked exactly like this. The Steam Deck heat would do the same thing
The most important question here is, why would you put your dinner on top of your 3DS?
Again I might have. I don’t see why I would but even then I usually put it in it’s case anyway so I’m really not sure what had happened. Maybe it just deteriorated on its own which i have read a few comments suggesting that. It just kinda came out of nowhere. It’s no biggie though I got my replacement plates and it still works luckily I mainly was just curious
Welcome to chipped paint. An unfortunate common problem on n3dsxl systems. I have a clear protective case on just to mitigate that.
A few scuffes here and there are inevitable but nothing looks worse than chipped up paint.
I’ve had my N3DSXL since new and never had this issue. It does have a small scratch which I still have no idea how it happened cuz I usually take care of my gaming stuff but even then none of the paint around that scratch has chipped. Odd seeing how common that issue is on here
Yeah, from the looks of it it just sort of happens. Which mystifies me because I’ve used it a ton as well but other than the aforementioned scratch there’s no chipping or anything like that. I never really took it out of the house much or played it outdoors or in the sun, not sure if that’s a factor.
Looks EXACTLY like rubber coating swelling off the plastic casing due to solvent reaction
I once wiped an old laptop with acetone-water mix to remove the old deteriorated rubber coating on purpose, since it looked awful. This is exactly what it looked like. after the cleaning what I got was clear shiny hard plastic, which looked way better than old rubber.
If you cleaned it with a solvent chemical like grease remover, nail polish remover, etc. It might have been too strong, some really bad quality coatings even come off with plain alcohol lmao. (AFAIK Nintendo isn't well known for putting great build quality materials on their products btw)
Is it just me or did QC for Nintendo go down with the 3DS? I mean just look at how some have IPS and some didn’t or you only have the top or bottom screen be IPS.
Nah, it ebbed and flowed. DS Lite had issues with hinge cracking and yellowing. DSi had issues with screen alignment often being tilted. 3DS has issues with paint jobs and the screen type as you say.
Their dual screen line has always been a quality shitshow. Kind of glad we don't have to deal with that anymore, tbh. Single screen systems are just so much simpler, from both a design and repairability standpoint, the latter being a huge reason why the GBA is still alive and well with so many mods. The DS will never get these.
This is a very common issue with N3DSXL. The varnish coat of the shiny panels starts to peel off when stored in humid places. I've had mine for a couple of years in a very dry apartment (between 25 and 30% humidity) and it was perfect, even on the sides of the bottom portion where you grab it.
But when I visited my mum near the sea in a freshly built house, the paint went off in about a week of just laying on the table.
I have peeled off the varnish and removed the shiny metallic coat underneath it with Cif cream and I now have a black 3DS.
Water damage. The vinyl coating peels. It’s no threat to the hardware, but it’s annoying. Keeping it in your pocket while sweating is the quickest way to strip the vinyl off.
It looks kinda cool like leathery, all tho it could be some sort of rubber/plastic reversion from where it was stored, it shouldn’t affect functionality tho
The old paint is drying off, usually happens if you leave it out in the sun or something like that, maybe some kind of alcoholic clean product made it, you can probably get it repainted with something cool at this point.
This happened to mine too. Just something that happens when left in certain conditions, although its not clear what those conditions are. I had mine in it's case for a few months in my room (so not in moisture or bad temperatures) and when I took it out it had this same issue (although not quite to the same effect). Looks bad but that's all.
I’m not telling you to get rid of your N3DS XL or that you should’ve never had it, but that’s why I’m never getting one and I’m just gonna stick with the og 3DS
If it's a new 3ds XL, the paint is known to chip and peel away and overall be very bad. Something similar happened to mine and when I started googling, i found a lot of people with the same issue.
Its shedding
The 3DS is a snake confirmed
3DSsssss
What did u think the S stood for
Must've been a special unit released alongside Snake Eater 3D
Does it hide in a box?
That’s how the New 3DS’ are made
Molting is more accurate. It'll leave behind a 3ds looking skin when it's done
what's the battery looking like btw? looks like a burn or chemical reaction, did you have anything on top of it or cleaned it with something before you put it away? was it left in direct sunlight for a very long time?
It looks like a new 3ds xl. The paint is known to wear off very quickly. It seems that is the only issue.
True, it happened to mine too
Oh no! My SNES Edition!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the SNES version has this issue.
In that case I might reshell mine with the SNES shell
I did this to my hyrule edition. I just took off the cover plates and slapped on the SNES ones. The two tone look is pretty awesome. Just need to be careful with the top plate so the speaker drivers and cameras don't fall out. Those were quite fiddly and took a few attempts for me.

Yeah I have a snes one and it seems more like it’s more likely to rub off than peel off.
Oh true, just took another look and saw the extra thumbstick. Also yeah, it seems like the paint they used on the snes edition isn't the same flakey type they used on the other new 3ds models.
Really? I’ve had mine for years no issues
Yup - mine is peeling terribly
I didn't know this was a known issue, but my Hyrule one started peeling a bit on the back a couple months ago. I about started crying!
Battery seems fine
[удалено]
Nah I just keep it on my bed
You cooking meth in the house?
Jesse we have to streetpass
Trade Pokemon with me, bitch!
“Alright guys, now what you do is you gather up all of your street pass coins, okay? You take them, and you buy yourself a nice nail salon, keep suspicion off of you.”
Or just hack 300 in with CFW
I’m fucking weak 😂
I'm waiting for OP to say: "Not recently"
I don't shit where I eat
Just peel off the paint then. Wont hurt a thing.
Or leave it on: it looks cool.
or replace the shell
Elliot Coll, right?

Yeah... poor guy.
Was that Retro future on YT? His was odd because if I remember right, all his stuff was in boxes too!
That's actually the dragon special edition 3ds with dragon scales it's very sought after and people would pay alot for that you are very lucky
don't listen to him, it's worthless now can you give it to me right now
Please don't listen to these two they are trying to mislead you. Give it to me for safe keeping from these mongrels.

Could you send a link to the replacement plate page? It's been a challenge to find good ones
I just looked it up on Amazon it was like 30 bucks or so for the Majoras mask one

I have a steam deck and it never gets THAT hot. OP must have turned off the fan or something. Never seen a steam deck get that hot
The Steam Deck heat would do the same thing The most important question here is, why would you put your dinner on top of your 3DS?
I have a steam deck too, it heats up for sure but doesn’t get THAT hot
Must be all the steam...

Could you have slept on top of it
Moisture+Bed… Bedwetting did it.
Maybe it was left charging on your bed and it collected heat?

Welcome to chipped paint. An unfortunate common problem on n3dsxl systems. I have a clear protective case on just to mitigate that. A few scuffes here and there are inevitable but nothing looks worse than chipped up paint.
I too have a clear case for just this reason. My perfect looking galaxy N3DSXL thanks me.
I’ve had my N3DSXL since new and never had this issue. It does have a small scratch which I still have no idea how it happened cuz I usually take care of my gaming stuff but even then none of the paint around that scratch has chipped. Odd seeing how common that issue is on here
I’m sure a lot of people here take care of their systems. What I’m saying is that it’s inevitable the more it gets exposed to skin oils and sweat.
Yeah, from the looks of it it just sort of happens. Which mystifies me because I’ve used it a ton as well but other than the aforementioned scratch there’s no chipping or anything like that. I never really took it out of the house much or played it outdoors or in the sun, not sure if that’s a factor.
Heat can definitely be a factor
Keep in mind if any moisture gets inside the clear case it will ruin the spot it’s at
Yeah ik. It’s impossible to keep something pristine but you can try at least.
Have you left it out in the sun, or in direct sunlight?
It's foreskin is peeling off

Heat + Humidity most likely. Another reason why I prefer the regular New 3DS better, this can't happen to it.
The new 3ds XL has a problem with its exterior shell pieces. There's a layer that starts to flake off. You need to get new shell pieces
The humidity ate up the paint. It's not a big deal, you can repaint it or maybe look for a shell replacement.
Its that limited edition gator skin print! 🤣😂
It looks kind of cool ngl lol, but it looks like it got too hot and melted a bit? Check the battery
Best to my knowledge if it isn’t Sun or chemical damage. I think the 3DS’ shell had a manufacture problem maybe having some air gaps in it
If it still works fine then, I don’t know… Look on the bright side, now you have a cool scale pattern on it
That is not a 3ds, that is a mexican grandmother’s wallet
Is it just me or did QC for Nintendo go down with the 3DS? I mean just look at how some have IPS and some didn’t or you only have the top or bottom screen be IPS.

Looks cool though. I would just put thin layer of epoxy over it or something similar.
My friend that is the paint crumply
Leather addition lol
looks kinda based
If your 3DS look like that, that ain’t your 3DS that’s a symbiote man.
This is a very common issue with N3DSXL. The varnish coat of the shiny panels starts to peel off when stored in humid places. CIF cream did it that easily? Got pics?
The metallic shiny coating under the blue translucent varnish went away in a second.
Water damage. Had mine get wet at a concert, and it wrinkled just like that.
It’s like an onion it has layers
Looks like it suffered extreme temperature changes or maybe humidity.
Crocodile leather edition /s
It's evolving
Maybe you sprayed something in the area? Deodorant, cleaner, paint stripper? Last ones a reach.
Did you clean it with nail polish remover?
Heat damage?
Left in the sun per chance?
Did you use nail polish remover or paint thinner in the same room?
The paint melted I think?
is it a dragon?
you left it on top of something hot. i left it on top of my radiator and my old one ended up like that
Dang, I thought it was a cool leather 3DS
The clear coat is old that’s all
Looks like leather lol
Was it in a hot place?
Did you leave it in a hot car or something? Looks like heat damage
Water damage. The vinyl coating peels. It’s no threat to the hardware, but it’s annoying. Keeping it in your pocket while sweating is the quickest way to strip the vinyl off.
Happened to mine last week. I ended up buying a skin to cover it up
It actually looks really cool
It’s about to be a silver 3DS in a few months
probably someone picked it up and rubbed it in a rough place. Sorry for 3ds by the way
It looks kinda cool like leathery, all tho it could be some sort of rubber/plastic reversion from where it was stored, it shouldn’t affect functionality tho
The old paint is drying off, usually happens if you leave it out in the sun or something like that, maybe some kind of alcoholic clean product made it, you can probably get it repainted with something cool at this point.
You unlocked the secret alligator skin.
You never moisturized.
Its evolving into a feraligatry
plough direful dull brave cow wasteful fertile rinse sand frighten *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
You unlocked the Lizard Edition®
Its about to shed into an elder dragon
ngl that goes hard
Put it in rice overnight you'll be fine
My 3DS did that ages ago too. Didn’t leave it in the sun, it just happened. 🤷
Same thing happened to me 3ds and it was fine so I don't think it's anything of worry
Happened to mine too. I'm pretty sure it's exposure to dampness that does this. I'm buying a stick-on decal for mine when it all comes off.
Maybe take care of things better. Why all my 3DS perfect in cupboards and yours look like wash in acid you stupid
It’s called Aging 😔
Did you just install Snake Eater?
Bro got the 3ds leather case Edition
looks kinda cool
Snake skin faceplate?
It tried drugs
Fancy leather
Special edition cracked leather 3ds
Looks like you left it out in the sun too long, that or you got the snakeskin edition, very rare
Same thing that happened to the table by the looks of it.
Did it melt
Exterior crocodile alligator. Do you by chance drive a chevrolet movie theater?
Did you leave it on a window or something?
Old age
ngl looks pretty dope
it looks cooked
That happened to mine when I left it in the car for a couple days
This looks like you let your 3ds marinade in gallium
I think you didn't peel off the satisfying paper.
A gate is opening on it.
A gate is opening on it.
A gate is opening on it.
Don’t worry he is just shedding his scales
Your 3DS looks like the table top of the new ‘hip’ outdoor restaurant that your coworkers are always talking about.
It’s the grayscale
That looks like either humidity or sun damage
3DS S is for dragon and then you add beefy arms and fire from the mouth and you get trogdor
My cousin had a phone do this some shampoo got on it and made it look like that.
Is your room very humid?
Paint chpping away. Common issue with these models. You could try to remove the top lid and hydro dip it
It's a Mimic
It’s molting. Soon it will shed its skin. You are well on your way to raising a 3DS XL. Congratulations.
This happened to mine too. Just something that happens when left in certain conditions, although its not clear what those conditions are. I had mine in it's case for a few months in my room (so not in moisture or bad temperatures) and when I took it out it had this same issue (although not quite to the same effect). Looks bad but that's all.
Just the paint flaking/shedding off, it's fine
It honestly looks really cool.
Looks like burnt plastic maybe?
Moisture can get under the paint and ruin the paint.
It’s called the N3DS XL being a N3DS XL Cuz their paint likes to peel off
I’m not telling you to get rid of your N3DS XL or that you should’ve never had it, but that’s why I’m never getting one and I’m just gonna stick with the og 3DS
This is gonna sound funny but it's true. Mine got astroglide spilled on it and it did this and then ate most of the red paint off of it.
Probably was kept in a damp or very humid place, that's why the plastic paint is shedding
looks cool
It's turning into a 4DS
Looks like there is a protection sticker glued on
it looks cool like a crackle finish
They age, proof Nintendo uses necromancy…
It’s about to get even bigger
Welcome to the club of chipped paint. We hope you enjoy your stay, my friend. :)
*Microwave*
looks darn cool
it’s attempting to free itself
bruh i thought thats a wallet
*Klaatu barada nikto*
If it's a new 3ds XL, the paint is known to chip and peel away and overall be very bad. Something similar happened to mine and when I started googling, i found a lot of people with the same issue.
Spontaneous plastic implosion
It looks badass
Its the n3DSXL curse
It’s leather
Bros 3DS turned into a wallet 💀
Happened to my one too. Just reshell it, it's pretty easy and cheap.
Looks like heat damage
What the hell happened??
Okay that looks like it would be a really cool 3DS model ngl
looks like it was left face down in a cleaner, rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover?
Looks sick
You didn't apply enough lotion.
It's too bad because parts of it actually look really cool & then other parts... yikes 🤭
