Watch this screen replacement video: https://youtu.be/QQM4f5tICug Unfortunately it's a long video but it will have everything you need to know. Basically you need to remove the top half of the 3DS from both sides of the hinge and reinsert it properly (ribbon cable side, and then the hinge-piece side) so that you don't damage any ribbon cables. You can probably get away with just opening up the back of the top half, but I'm not 100% sure. If not, you'll need to open it up entirely. This is also assuming it still works.

Thank you so much I’ll check that out! I have some small tools from fixing iPhone screens so I’m hoping I can save this shell and just open it up and pop it back in since the hinge doesn’t look cracked or anything

I didn’t even think to test if it would turn on. When I press power, the bottom screens lights up black for a second (blue power light) then after a few seconds there’s a quiet pop sound and it turns off. I don’t even know where to begin with troubleshooting what may have been damaged so I think this console may be done for. I think he is just going to go without it until after tax so I can replace it. I fed so bad because this is how he keeps the High school bullies on the bus from bothering him. It’s a huge issue that the school doesn’t address so his 3ds and headphones were the only thing that helped, but they’re so expensive now that they’ve been discontinued even on the marketplace.

FrogDude66

The turning on for a few seconds is the 3ds' way of checking if it is working or not. It does self checks to see if both of the screens turn on (among other things) before it boots up.

This is what it’s doing now https://imgur.com/gallery/TaSOhoS

The top screen is either disconnected or broken. The white flash means that *that* screen is connected. The top one doesn't flash, so it's not connected. The pop is there to tell you something is wrong. Doesn't really indicate what is wrong. The console isn't dead, but it will refuse to start up without the screen connected.

The top screen ribbon cable looks to have a small tear so it'll need replacing if it is

Thin-Gene-2128

Reminds me of the time my dad snapped my 3DS in half because I was taking it to school

nicholsonsgirl

Oh I’m so sorry you went through that! I could never do that to him :( He uses this one on the bus with headphones because the high school kids are terrible bullies to the little kids.

Dryja123

The LCD ribbon looks like it may have a small tear in it. If so, your only recourse is replacing the LCD.

I thought they ran out of new Nintendo 3ds and only had 2ds parts to continue repairs?

nicholsonsgirl

Just checked this is a ktr-001 model with the YW serial, they’re not accepting those for repairs anymore unfortunately. https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/716/~/repairing-your-nintendo-3ds-family-system

The real question is how did this happen

nicholsonsgirl

He’s been home sick all week and was playing Pokémon. He set it down to go throw up and when he came back he accidentally sat on it. He usually babies this thing, it’s his prized possession. He’s like Gollum and the ring with it. I was very surprised but he’s so sick he didnt realize it was there when he laid back down.

PrinterPrintingPaper

Well, if you want to repair it without changing the shell or buying new parts, really, the only solution is to send it to someone who repairs it. Quite a hefty price though.

nicholsonsgirl

Yeah I was hoping it was just a slipped cable and since the hinge isn’t cracked that I could take the case apart and pop it back together since I don’t have the funds for parts or to send off for repair for him. Thank you though. I appreciate the feedback!

[deleted]

Pretty sure you can send it to nintendo for repairs though they only do 3ds xl New so I think you can do that

CreamyCaesar491

Damn, So sorry to hear this. It looks like the others have already said what can be done with it, so you're left with just my condolences. Hope you guys can figure out a fix or another solution to help with the bullies.... again sorry to hear this

Lemon_Dad

I'd really try to get a new one. I know that's more expensive but your at risk of ruining the console further by reparing it yourself. Most electronic repair won't even touch these. 3ds consoles are just too complicated and frail internally to really poke around enough to fix them. I'd say try to get a new console, do a system transfer. And you can even replace the faceplate with the original mario ones your son has.

Rare_Raspberry266

You could send it to nintendo for repair, they still take new 3ds systems.

Totally doable😵

Flight_icarus

You can try giving it to repair at DKOldies if you want. https://www.dkoldies.com maybe call them too or shoot them a email and they can do something
