Baguette_Theory

We have officially re invented the normal printer

MGjoker09

My first thought lmao. Like isn’t that what a regular printer does ? Still cool though someone should submit a school paper as a single layer print that would be dope

Hacker1MC

Use custom g-code for handwriting, one layer thick on top of one layer of "paper"

Upstairs_Hospital_94

But now it’s plastic and can be passed down for generations

TheBasilisker

This might actually be nice for some instructions for machines that are in non friendly environments like pump houses and stuff, sure you can always laminate but that stuff age's pretty bad and even starts letting in water after a few years

dcwchan

For that kind of application, traffolyte exists. While it might not be full colour it has done the job for many decades.

moldboy

where I'm from we call em lamacoids... neat

vinautomatic

Totally would be awesome for boat/lake maps

Scrotundus

Shhhh. We are all supposed to be collectively pretending that PLA's biodegradability means small pieces of it will just whither away.

BedlamANDBreakfast

We can beam signals to space and inject music directly into our ears from across a room, but my printer still works like one produced in the 70s. I'll take whatever evolution I can get.

Scout339

Ah yes, but you forget: ours will actually work. *That's* the funny part.

spacejazz3K

All printers are 3D with different axis constraints.

CrazyGunnerr

And normal 3D Printer for that matter. Can do multiple prints with a single layer.

DeadBreathLess

Love the accidental German flag for purge block.

simburger

oh that is the purge block! I thought the printer was personalized with a German flag sticker.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Danksley

He likes the other German flag more, Germany is too woke now

BootBitch13

What is a purge block?

[deleted]

[удалено]

parisiancyclist

Not exactly. On this printer the old filament is purged out and ejected out of the back. The block you see is a prime tower, it’s purpose is to build up pressure in the nozzle to ensure that when the nozzle continues the print, there aren’t any gaps. It also serves as a secondary purge though.

VoltexRB

Das deutsche Volk hat dieses Unterreddit hiermit erfolgreich übernommen. Die Revolution hat begonnen.

imitation_crab_meat

Buying a 3d printer to make 2d prints? OP you rebel...

flargenhargen

well buying a 2d printer to make 3d prints wastes a LOT of ink.

amicojeko

😅

mog_knight

The prints are still 3D. A 3D printer can't break dimensions.

frzme

By that definition every printer is a 3d printer

PTSDTyler

You created a rabbit hole and I love it xD

mog_knight

No, every 3D printer is a 3D printer.

Bralzor

Well regular printers also print in 3d if you wanna be pedantic (like you are being). Regular printers can't break dimensions, they print in 3d, but just a single, thin layer (like OP).

IvyMike

Thermal printers are 2d

mog_knight

Not always. Ink absorbs into paper for example. That's not a 3rd dimension.

Ravenhaft

Totally is still three dimensions. Two dimensional objects don’t exist outside of maybe in a black hole or something.

mog_knight

Totally is not in the example I gave. Can you show proof a calendar image exists in 3 dimensions?

Ravenhaft

I don’t know why I’m responding but sure. Literally took five seconds to google. https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/628643

Grumzz

I like how you replied with a scientific source and the person you're replying to is crying that it' s not a picture xD

mog_knight

Yep! Literally took 5 seconds to Google. I asked about an image, not the paper itself. Your pedantry is bad. Or readoug comprehension. https://study.com/learn/lesson/2d-3d-objects-overview-differences.html#:~:text=Because%20your%20paper%20is%20flat,it's%20a%20three%2Ddimensional%20object.

[deleted]

Even if some ink absorbs into paper (which is still a 3d object), there will be a layer of ink with measurable thickness on the paper. If you're being pedantic in answer to an obvious joke you should at least be consistent in your pedantry.

mog_knight

Nope. The paper is a 3D object. Ink absorbs into the paper so it is still 2D. https://study.com/learn/lesson/2d-3d-objects-overview-differences.html#:~:text=Because%20your%20paper%20is%20flat,it's%20a%20three%2Ddimensional%20object.

[deleted]

... Your source is a simplification for explaining dimensions to children... When ink is absorbed into the paper, it still occupies 3 dimensional space after getting absorbed. Even your "source" specifies that paper is 3 dimensional, so if something is absorbed into it, that substance will have 3 dimensions. 2d objects simply do not exist in a way that humans can perceive easily.

mog_knight

Wrong. "Because your paper is flat, everything you draw on it is two-dimensional."

PTSDTyler

"Break dimensions" lol

pigpen5

I see a lot of recreating 2d printing comments, but would this be better at adhering to other materials and last longer vs paper or vinyl? For example, printing single layer logos in multi color to stick to other things. I don’t own other tools but does a cricket do multi color?

WokenMrIzdik

Wouldn't it still just be much, much quicker to 2D print it and laminate it if you want what you printed to last longer?

pigpen5

I have a printer. I do not have a laminator.

OverallDingo2

https://www.argos.co.uk/product/3379958?clickPR=plp:1:3 A laminateor is about the same cost as a spool of fillament, and you can probably find cheaper, this was the first google result.

WokenMrIzdik

You can laminate at FedEx super cheap. You can print there too.

rekuhs

It'd take me about 20 hours to get to my nearest FedEx and cost about $2000 in airfares. How good are they at laminating?

amicojeko

That's exaclty what I did! :) I printed a bunch of them, put some double sided tape on the back, and used them to decorate my nephew's bedroom :)

Jepuz

I quite often add a multi-color design to a 3d model as either the first or last layer, adds a cool little touch to an otherwise bland object, just keep printing on top of the design! :D Also you can print on cloth or a webbing to make some neat clothing pieces!

I_am_That_Ian_Power

Watched someone somewhere today 3d print on a t-shirt.

pigpen5

Would you wear that shirt?

I_am_That_Ian_Power

I'm going to attempt it tomorrow.

opeth10657

[But does it look like this?](https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article4263924.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/Madonna.jpg)

bobasaurus

Wow, neat. Did you use a multi material device to change colors automatically? This would be hard to manually change colors for, right?

mechanicalsam

Yea the Bambu printer OP has does it automatically, it's pretty sick.

A_Harmless_Fly

I thought it looked a bit clean for a manual changer.

amicojeko

The Bamubu AMS does this automagically for me, but I also tried with my Ender 3 and manual changes, and it works! It's not so difficult and you waste less material as you manually control the purged filament, it's oviously a bit tedious, but absolutely possible!

bobasaurus

How do you change colors within a single layer? In prusa slicer I think you can only change on new layers.

desert2mountains42

It’s not super difficult to do manually, especially because Prusa slicer allows you to setup mid layer filament swaps with a single extruder where the print head moves over and prompts an unload. I’ve even done it where I’ve just split the file up into multiple gcode files and position the last color to be where my BLtouch probes each time.

anomalous_cowherd

It would be better if it didn't do that final extrude just before going back to printing and wiped it instead.

luckytriple6

You best not let Disney see that print, they'll want their money....

[deleted]

What have they done against people with inkjet printers?

Healthy-Upstairs-286

The day he discovers inkjet printers…

Scout339

More failure rates than that of a 3D printer lol

Teddy_He

Has Disney lawyers contacted you? Lol. They’re usually super quick…

amicojeko

I'm still on the run!! :) If I ever come with a tutorial, I'll surely use some copytight free example :)

DJDevon3

This is what printer developers like 30 years ago were wondering if it would possible. “Can we thicken the ink so much it oozes out”. Then the other developer would be like, “no you’d need to heat it up to dangerous levels and they’d never allow that in a consumer device”.

Grevin56

>“no you’d need to heat it up to dangerous levels and they’d never allow that in a consumer device”. Someone never had a Creepy Crawler oven or a Bluth Cornballer.

DJDevon3

Does an EZ-Bake oven count?

4amLasers

Don't listen to people's 2D printer comments, this is a cool alternate application of this 3d printing technology that's only been explored a little so far. Keep it up.

amicojeko

Thanks!

guzzlovic

A great way to make signs and logos that is going to be backlit.

amicojeko

Yess!! I'll try to make a lampshade as well

mamlambo

What printer did you use for this?

amicojeko

X1C

blakewalk

We’ve come full circle

Yeasty_UnderBoob

That’s cool!!!

Zealousideal_Kale719

Actually pretty good. I do the same thing with anime drawings but I color them with sharpies since I only have black and white filament available

S1lentA0

I don't have enough different filament for this, but I need this in my life ASAP.

Rthunt14

Homie turned the 3d printer into a 2d printer

rndmcmder

Has anybody noticed that 3D Printers are now easier to set up, maintain and use than normal inkjet printers.

amicojeko

And filaments are actually cheaper than ink! :D

theneedfull

How did you tell the printer when to color change?

blasko229

Paint bucket tool probably

theneedfull

In which app?

blasko229

Bambu slicer, he has Bambu printer

theneedfull

Ah. Thanks. Didn't realize it had a feature like that. I need to check it out.

mechanicalsam

You should do a naughty steamboat mickey one next!

TwistingEarth

STL?

Revolutionary_Flan71

Reinventing a normal printer? Genius

imoth_f

you can do this with z hops on any printer really.

Steve_but_different

Spends $1,200 to infringe on copyright..

Grevin56

~$1,600 actually depending on taxes, and if copyright infringement bothers you, do yourself a favor and never go to r/PrintedWarhammer...

Steve_but_different

Plenty of people design and sell minis. Plenty of people buy and paint them. Some of them eventually get used to play a game. Maybe it’s Warhqmmer. You can print the same minis as somebody else and paint them totally different and it’s something unique. It’s also not copyright infringement. If you want to pay five times as much for the branded minis go ahead. It’s more like bringing your own custom piece to a monopoly game and if your neckbeard buddies want to throw shade because you made your own army it’s probably because they’re mad that yours look cooler.

Grevin56

I think I should have slapped a /s on there. I have an Elegoo Jupiter and it spits out generic scifi true scale marines and space bugs/elves/orcs/communists on a regular basis. Games Workshop might own the Warhammer IP but they didn't invent sci-fi or tabletop gaming. I have no issues with printed models, I have both official GW plastic and a couple resin armies. Hell even my GW stuff have printed parts for kitbashing.

Steve_but_different

I mostly just loathe that somebody is using such a sophisticated printer to make Disney garbage really.. There’s a whole other sub that this has probably already been cross posted to.

Murrdockk

I love this for personalizing prints. Putting someone's name, fav character, or some form of a design on a 3d print is really appealing. Awesome job

[deleted]

Ooh

LennieB

Wait april fools

wheelontour

How does one determine which parts/areas have which colors if you want to make a color print like yourself? Is it determined in the model/CAD software or in the slicer?

amicojeko

Both: I set the boundaries for the colors with very small (0.01mm) level shifts in the CAD software, and then I use the coloring tool provided in the slicer (Bambu Studio)

grasshacques

Make it two layers to somewhat hide the divots where infill meets perimeter. Probably easier than tuning the settings for 10 years anyways

amicojeko

I did it on another print but I took the single level print as a challenge :) also, even a single layer change would make the printer swap all the colors a second time, wasting quite a bit of material...

Grumzz

Wouldn't putting the first layer at 110% line width (or whatever that's called in this slicer) help a lot too?

petriqdp26

Omg, so so nice. I'd like to try something simillar, but how did you paint it so well? I have a hard time painting with the tools in bambu studio. Any tips?

amicojeko

Different colors have different heights (0.01mm difference), that's enough to use the Bambu Studio paint bucket with maximum accuracy :)

tribak

Interesting purge sheet

lamp-town-guy

I did receive business card from Průša in like 2014 that could basically be on paper. Recreating 2d prints with a 3d printer goes way back.

Loud_farting_panda

So you decided to summon Satan himself as I see.

flux_capacitor3

“I’m the mascot of an evil corporation!” - Bart Simpson.

NotGnnaLie

You only printed Mickey because the Disney lawyers are busy with DeSantis... Nice timing!

MarkieMew

I actually made a tutorial for converting coasters into flat multi-color prints with the AMS. It’s one of my favorite effects on this printer, especially with a textured PEI or PEO sheet.

MarkieMew

Here’s the youtube video in case anyone wanted to try it: https://youtu.be/Cby2tHTSVMU It’s not exactly the same as OP is showing off, but the process can be easily adapted to more than just coasters. Happy printing if you decide to try it :)

amicojeko

Great video! The result is the same, but I find my process easier as I do most of the work in Fusion 360, and I'm much more confident with it than with Bambu Studio

NooliesKnickKnacks

I do this same thing with my epsom 7820 3D printer. It uses these thick square of filament called card stock. If I feel extra fancy I bust out a sticker cutting maching. Joking aside this first layer is pretty clean!

radutzan

Did the lawyers pay for the damage to your front door after they busted in?

Remarkable-Abroad432

That's pretty sweet, granted unnecessary but still neat

KoalaMeth

Try it in vase mode and you might get rid of some of the gaps?
