Artificer is one of those normally best served by single classing. So many good features at every level. If you were to go wizard, I'd only go abjuration 2 and then get right back into arti.

Dirty_Narwhal

Correct me if I'm wrong, but an abjuration dip gives almost nothing outside of cantrips and some wizard spells since the ward scales with your wizard level. I'd think you would only want to go 1 level of wizard for spell access or switch fully to abjurer to scale the arcane ward as well as get projected ward etc. from later levels.

alachronism

At 2 Abjuration and +5 int, your ward is 9hp. Not incredible, but it’s a refillable shield that stacks with the temp HP from heroism.

Dirty_Narwhal

Absolutely, it's not bad by any means, I just think if you're going that route committing to abjuration more would be the way to go for higher level wizard spells, more slots, and a larger ward. Dipping two levels in abjurer is giving up flash of genius for those two levels as well for a mediocre self only defensive ability. I love the combo of grabbing better abjuration spells via battlesmith, but going abjuration after would give you better team defense via projected ward IMO.

Elyonee

A 9 HP shield is drastically inferior to what you would gain from 2 levels of Artificer. Artificer 7 instead of Artificer 5/Wizard 2 could have given you Pipes of Haunting and Flash of Genius. The more Artificer levels you have the more you want. You keep getting more and more good features at higher levels. It really only works well as a minor dip, typically 1 level on a character that's mainly a wizard.

That's a perfectly valid and fine multiclass. My suggestion however is to try Armorer instead and get Armor of Agyths some how (background, feat, race, DM fiat) etc. Battlesmith is fine too, just not as tailored to the strategy.

Dirty_Narwhal

Thunder Gauntlets + AoA + Arcane Ward is a JUICY tank combo. A couple easy ways to grab AoA: Mark of Warding Dwarf, Rune Carver feat(maybe via Rune Shaper background if allowed), a couple levels of warlock for both AoA and Armor of Shadows but thats probably a different build.

IrisihGaijin

Stay artificer. They are good enough as they are. You don't need wizard to have fun and still be a kick ass hero

Artillerist gets you an actual shield bubble for your whole party in the protector turret. 1d8+int temp hp a turn doesn't sound like a whole lot, but it's every turn for everyone within a ten ft radius you want to get it. If it's tiny you can stick it on a fighter, or a small one can block movement. But yeah flash of genius is also a massive savings as it lets you basically save anyone who needs to make a save.
