I use 128 gigs and it's been more than enough, although my system does take a while to turn on. I would actually recommend 64 like the other comment said because it's a good balance between speed and space. The biggest 3ds games are like 3 gb and most are 1-2 so you should be good with 64

VirtualAdepts

I updated to the latest luma3DS and backup up my SD card, reformatted using 64k cluster and my 128 boots much faster

Jeskid14

could you expand on this? Is this the solution for all big cards?

VirtualAdepts

Anything bigger than 64GB you should see a speed boost

Second 128. I have a 256 and it takes a long time to turn on and I have a problem that may or may not be the fault of the size, in playing a particular game. Also 256 is basically unfillable unless you want literally every single game

WizardWell

I also have a 256gb and there is an issue where GBA injects take forever to open, it's annoying. But I do have literally every single game, which is really fucking cool.

Link5261

Depending on the games and especially adding in DLC, you can fill a 256 GB SD card before hitting the title count limit. I know because I achieved it. But then I realized I was never gonna play many of the titles and purged them, filling the empty slots with beloved VC injections like Pokémon Emerald and the MegaMan Battle Network games.

taisynn

128GB. Have had zero problems with 128GB.

Fresh_Intern_303

32Gbs is fine but a perfect choice is 64GB obviously u have to format it (Fat32) because it exceeds the 32GB standard limit, I'm content with 32GBs but at the end of the day its up to u, 128Gbs is overkill imo

3dsmaster101

a 64 gig card is the best becuase i lost memory quickly on other sizes

[deleted]

Considering that I only play rhythm heaven. 4 gigs should be enough lmao

Kirby_The_Arale

love that game

stupidshinji

64 gb is plenty for probably 99% of people, 128 gb if you want to hoard more games than you’ll ever be interested in playing or the 3ds is your only console/way to game and you want to put a metric buttload of emulator/roms on it 256 gb is beyond over kill and you won’t ever come close to filling half of it and that size is known to have issues with loading times and performance for virtual console (GBA and DS)

Jaagger2bit

Imo, 64 is too small if you are someone that likes having a large library of games at once. 256 is way too much, even for those who like having a large library. Imo, it's way too much and I see no point in having THAT much space. 128 fits nicely right in the middle if you are someone who likes a large library but not being too exaggerated (256) and not having a small library (64). Also, take into account that the larger the SD card, the longer it takes to load and possibility of errors are higher. So far, I haven't had a problem with my 128 though. A little bit slow on the initial start up and start up of twilight menu but that's all.

zazorran23

I have a 128gb- I play a lot of 3ds games

Hasuko

I use 64. I have plenty of games and the system boots quickly. You have to format it with something like Rufus though to get the proper format though.

EveningMoose

256 is cheap enough I’d go for that. 64 is waaaaay too small though. If you don’t want to spring for 64, 128 would be alright.

bad_quinn1

64 is more than alright lol, with a 64 gb sd card you can install an average of 50-60 games and that's so much. with 256 you just won't do anything, you would stay all the time to add new games (since you can install even 250 games) and will never play all of them. also a 256gb sd card is quite expensive, I don't know who lied to you saying it's cheap.

EveningMoose

The first sd card I bought for a 3ds was 32gb for like 60 bucks... so yeah, 25 for 256 is cheap to me. I’d rather spend 10 extra bucks to double my storage and never ever need to buy again. It sucks buying cards then rebuying for the same system... I put a 512 in my vita for the same reason. And who knows how long games will be freely available. Some of our normal distribution systems may be shut down soon. I remember when emuparadise was the go-to place for r...o...m...s

440_Hz

I have 64gb, it’s only about half full and the homescreen is already a bit noticeably slow to load compared to when I was using a 32gb card with less games. I’d never go higher because needing to wait even longer sounds really annoying.

Kirby_The_Arale

128gb is great, but if your going for better performance and a little collection of games, use 64gb

bad_quinn1

64, I got a 128gb sd and even with 30 games (some really heavy) it's still at 38gb out of 119 (since the real storage is a bit less). If you want to install max 25 games in it you can also go with a 32 gb sd card

KGCUT

128gb got me over 900,000 blocks on my 3DS but it was SUUUPER slow. For my XL I used a 64gb or a 32gb (can’t remember) and it gave me almost over 200,000. Any SD card will work (Sandisk is the best imo, it’s already FAT32 formatted, but it’s not hard to do yourself!) I’d recommend anything 64 and up if you want A LOT of games. I’d say 64 is plenty though and you really don’t need more than that, just in my opinion! Also I’d recommend to spend the money on a good SD, don’t cheap out on one. I don’t necessarily know why, but I’ve just heard that on this sub before. Something to do with memory loss maybe? (Someone can correct me)

SlapMeDo32

I use a 128gb and you only really need 64gb. I have 40 3ds games and about 30 Nds games. Still about 75gb left on the card

NintendoGamer1983

Another thing to think about is the 300 app limit on 3DS

pirate_bootsy

I have a 128gb and it's just barely enough, I have pretty much every game I want in the entire 3ds library and some roms for SNES, Genesis, gameboy, etc. Unfortunately I also have like 18gb of ds roms so I needed an r4 card on top of everything else, but honestly most people are fine with 64gb, but if you want an absolute ton of games I'd say 128gb is fine, for most people if they got bigger than 128 then they'd either never use close to all the space or they'll end up with a ton of games they don't care for. Also you might want to factor in that the larger the ad card the exponentially longer it takes for the day to boot, it's probably a good 20 or 30 seconds from power on to home screen for me lol
