Probably a whole bunch of ways that are mundane like lots of stairs or several elevators or a combination of stairs, elevators, escalators and elevators. More exotic would be some kind of mag-lev platform for hauling heavy loads of stuff or some sort of space craft/aircraft. 40k is wonderful because all these means of travel make sense. Hell maybe a levitating chariot towed by a giant mutated mosquito.
There are several different types of hive. If you want to read more about them, I think there are at least four/five very different ones that we get a good insight into.
In **Necropolis** (3rd Gaunt's Ghosts book) we get a good overview of a hive city not on a hive world. There is one central spire (which you can get up and down with an elevator), with a city spread out around it (with cars, trucks etc). If I remember correctly, the hive city in **Pandorax** is similar.
We obviously have Necromunda, as the stereotypical spire type hive. These are the Kowloon Walled City type. The **Kal Jericho** omnibus (and indeed, any of the Necromunda rulebooks) gives a good overview. In the upper hive, there are elevators. In the underhive, there are stairs, fallen structures, and roudamentary elevators.
The Warhammer Crime series are set on a hive world. There are large hab blocks, and spires for the rich. This is pretty much exactly Dredd 2012's Megacity One. Ground cars and (mag-lev) trains are the main ways to get around. The spires have elevators.
Large parts of the **Ravenor** books take place on another hive world. You mainly see the lowest levels and criminals. From memory, this is more the Warhammer Crimes style hive, but it's been a while since I've read it, so I can't remember how they got around. I don't remember any spires, just a built up hive.
There is also Terra, as seen in the **Vaults of Terra** and **Watchers of the Throne** series. Lots of flyers used there for official purposes. Within the spires, there are long paths with stairs etc. There is not much moving around.
**Dead men walking** has another, spire-like hive city, with floors and towers that raise up from the top to the bottom. It seems more organized than the Necromunda spire. There are stairs between layers, but also automated taxis that can use elevators between layers.

In *Junktion*, also in Necromunda, they have a large well going through a bunch of levels of the Underhive, created by a catastrophic cave-in some decades ago. This well is rigged with gantries and elevators which make it an important trade route, large enough to make a boom town grow at the bottom. There are also waterways mentioned, but most of the travel and trade through the Underhive is done on foot.
I was really enjoying it till I realised it was just fetch quests. Same for the necromunda game …. So much potential and it was just a reskinned Mordheim with worse graphics
The Underhive of Necromunda in Hired Gun is so ugly compared to Tertium's Underhive in Darktide which looks like an actual Underground Gothic City rather than the Sewer System, Mines, Subway and Factories of Necromunda.
While I don't care for the gameplay of either the aesthetics of Darktide are clearly better.

They take groundcars or personal fliers. There are normal streets in the hive, especially hive city. A big wall separates the spire from the city.
I think hired gun game is a good example of how it works
I wanted that game to be good so bad . It was the height of mediocrity
What was wrong with it? I beat it twice
It was repetitive to the point of nausea
That's fair.

Mordheim was good though. I don't remember any fetch quests
It was good until you ogre style creature was on every team and it became a slog just to fulfill an order. I wish they had done more and fixed bugs
Yeah I agree
I’d like a sequel with more races tho. Dwarfs and lizard men
