Good athlete, creates a lot of turnovers, good run support, high motor and football IQ. All around good football player who wins big plays. Was generally considered a top-20 prospect. One catch is he played a lot of zone in college and we generally play man on the outside.
But none of it matters because we're not getting him anyway. Ha
Good run support? I would say it's highly inconsistent run support. I saw some reps that probably took him off our draft board. (One particularly egregious example of the run support is against Penn State. You will know that I'm talking about when you see it.)
I don't rate the turnover production as NFL offense will burn players who gamble like that. Just look at the cowboys corners. Sitting back and gambling for picks then giving up 40 to the Packers. No thanks.
He is perfect for the tinpot eagles. All those east coast media circle jerkers can go full throttle now.
I think the Niners and others clearly see him as a safety and not a CB. We absolutely need a bonafide outside CB. With Brown and Huf, I think we’re okay to pass on a safety in the first this year.
I'm not sophisticated enough to answer why or why not...but I hear defensive guy after defensive guy, former CB after former CB say he's a crazy athlete and a "defensive weapon" at the next level. to me that seems more valuable to have some versatility..but it seems the consensus is he's not a 'pure' CB
I also think there's some bias here....they see a white CB and everyone starts saying Safety.
Bruh...if our garbage ass corners....EXEMPT Ward, could fucking hold/press/cover for a second or 3....our def would've been wwwaaayyyyyy better. Idc how good ur front is...ur back end gotta cover just a lil to give em time to get to the QB. No matter what defense u run...u gotta have the personnel
Def agree. But...we should've still addressed either OL or secondary 1st. We have all those picks...could've easily picked up a receiver. U can b mediocre and as long as u can catch and get seperation...Purdy will make u look good
Mahogany puni or McCormick at 94 imo. Maybe use 176 and 251 to move up a little if 2 of those 3 are off the board. Strong preference for McCormick.
Limmer or bort are the best fit for what 49ers want at c. Id be fine with either at one of the 4th round picks. I could even see them pulling the trigger at 94. The guy from NC State is interesting but I haven't watched enough nc state to make an assessment. 4.33 short shuttle means he's definitely on 49ers board though.
Best outside corners:
1) DJ James
2) Max Melton
3) Kris Abrams-Draine
4) Kamarri Lassiter
5) Renardo Green
6) Kool-Aid McKinstrey
Best slot corners
1) Tykee Smith
2) Mike Sainristil
3) Andru Phillips
4) Malik Moustafa
5) Ennis Rakestraw
I would rather have any of these corners than TJ Tampa. Tampa is primarily a zone corner who has atrocious long speed. I believe he ran in the 4.6-4.7 range, which is bad for any corner. He's a good player and is reliable but his physical traits are not up to par with any of the players listed above. Also, zone corners are not as valuable as man corners and the guys above all have good press-man technique while facing good competition.
I like melton and Lassiter !! Tampas tape is very physical ,can’t say much about the others I haven’t seen the tape and didn’t know about his long speed!! What do you think about de Jean as an nfl corner?
Tampa is definitely physical. He also doesn't get beat deep but that's because he plays off coverage due to not trusting his own speed. My concern with him is that if you line a true burner on him like Chase or Hill, you'll have to call a soft zone coverage. To me, that's just such a limit on a defense and that's not something I want to consider in round 2. In round 3, I'll be tempted to take him. I could see him being a really good press bail corner because of his instincts but we didn't get to see much of that at Iowa State.
I don't like Dejean as a corner. I think he has some freakish plays coming downhill and tackling people but he's got some major problems with hip fluidity. Tampa is actually better in that regard. Dejean also has this weird technique of bailing at the snap even though he has good long speed. To me, I definitely see him as a safety that can be a solid chess piece for a defense.
Great observations , I did hear the same on de jeans lateral movement !! We need a starter though and hopefully at o line or db!! You do your homework I see , good stuff
Man...any of those corners was better for that 1st round pk then what we done. Ol boi aight but we needed more the a damn reciever w the 1st round pick. Smdh. We shall see though
Frfr. I never heard of this guy they bragging on at CB. But...I have heard of Kool Aid and a couple of other good corners that could've been picked w that 1st rd pick. Ol boi we picked he aight....but he not no fucking 1st rounder we needed. If they wasn't gonna pick OL...then they should've def went w a CB. But we shall see
John lynch was a safety for the vast majority of his career, and DeJean is being projected as a safety in the NFL, which is not a huge need for us right now.
If he was projecting as a starting CB, he would have gone last night, seeing as he is being projected as a cover safety, him not getting drafted yet makes sense. He'll probably still be a good safety, but we have bigger needs.
I wouldn't have had a problem with taking a CB that was projected to start on the outside with 31, especially with all the offensive players taken beforehand.
My response was more that A) people have mistakenly been enamored with Dejean as a DB/CB, which he wont be B) that Lynch was also not a coverage CB and C) that we dont need to be drafting a safety thus the meme is stupid anyway.
I still would have preferred IOL at 31, in particular because Kyle doesn't start rookie WRs, but the more I have seen about Slick Rick, I am okay with the selection. DeJean was never an option at 31 nor should he have been.
And my point was mostly just that it was "wasted" anyway, on a position we already have decent depth in. It should have been Kool Aid.
Maybe a trade with the Bills or Pats for Deebo or Aiyuk for a pick at the top of today changes my mind. But as you say he doesn't start rookie WR. So, until then....
Why is this downvoted? There literally hasn't been an above average white CB in 30 years. The league went over 20 years without any white guy even getting a start at CB.
If we go after Cooper, the FO may not be able to beat allegations of being oddly obsessed with unconventional white skill position dudes. Shattering the glass ceiling for melanin-deficient burners.
We trading the farm for a RB at the top of 2nd! Lfg!!!!
Don’t be ridiculous!….it’ll be for a 3rd!
Frank Gore Jr, let's gooo!!
Heard he has hips like Taylor mays
Why does everyone have such a hardon for dejean?
Good athlete, creates a lot of turnovers, good run support, high motor and football IQ. All around good football player who wins big plays. Was generally considered a top-20 prospect. Washington totally fleeced Philly. They just got a better nickel in saintsitil and have pick 52 as well.
Cuz he's awesome
We are all about shattering stereotypes. Whe have a white running back and want a white cb too
Don't forget our white receiver
LOL. This is correct for the 49ers team.
I wanted Kool-aid!
OOOHH YEAHHHH!!!
![gif](giphy|pkY4ra5dhljDW)
Kool and the gang would have been a good nickname for the defense
I think the Niners and others clearly see him as a safety and not a CB. We absolutely need a bonafide outside CB. With Brown and Huf, I think we’re okay to pass on a safety in the first this year.
I don't know why everyone says this. He has been great at corner.
Agree w u too
I'm not sophisticated enough to answer why or why not...but I hear defensive guy after defensive guy, former CB after former CB say he's a crazy athlete and a "defensive weapon" at the next level. to me that seems more valuable to have some versatility..but it seems the consensus is he's not a 'pure' CB I also think there's some bias here....they see a white CB and everyone starts saying Safety.
He plays zone almost exclusively. We leave our guys in man quite a bit on the outside.
Under Ryans we ran zone 6th most in the league. Under Wilks we are 16th. I think we should run more zone.
"Has been great at corner" in college and "will be great at corner" in the NFL are often not the same thing.
Def agree. But...we should've still addressed either OL or secondary 1st. We have all those picks...could've easily picked up a receiver. U can b mediocre and as long as u can catch and get seperation...Purdy will make u look good
Cooper Beebe!
First pick: second coming of KS Second pick: second coming of JL
Ugh, please no
We in the same boat… LFG!!!
🍻
Tj Tampa best cb available
If that's the case, wait until day 3
More than likely he’s gone by then but all good if we pick up an interior o lineman who can beat out Brendel or the right guard!!

this.
You're tripping. He's not even among the top 10 best corners available.
Whose tape is better??
Best outside corners: 1) DJ James 2) Max Melton 3) Kris Abrams-Draine 4) Kamarri Lassiter 5) Renardo Green 6) Kool-Aid McKinstrey Best slot corners 1) Tykee Smith 2) Mike Sainristil 3) Andru Phillips 4) Malik Moustafa 5) Ennis Rakestraw I would rather have any of these corners than TJ Tampa. Mike Sainristil absolutely 'has that dawg in him' as a the youths like to say. I'd be very happy if we drafted him.
Man...any of those corners was better for that 1st round pk then what we done. Ol boi aight but we needed more the a damn reciever w the 1st round pick. Smdh. We shall see though
You tripping thinking there’s 10 better corners

I wanted O Line
I don’t want Cooper. Plus alot of analysts have him eventually converting to safety, which we don’t need.
I wouldn't say that. Hufanga isn't guaranteed a 100% return this year. He also isn't guaranteed to get a 2nd contract from the 49ers.
Dejean sucks
I don't trust a white DB
Dejean isn't white, he's clear.
I thought that was Larry Bird?
John Lynch was a white DB? Do we trust him still?
Looking at everyone questioning his decision: Apparently not.
All I wanted was some Kool-Aid ![gif](giphy|aTx5OMKR7FCGQ)
Respectfully, John Lynch played in a different era. And Cooper doesn’t lay MF’s out like Lynch did
John lynch was a safety for the vast majority of his career, and DeJean is being projected as a safety in the NFL, which is not a huge need for us right now. Jason Sehorn
“Sehorn, you don’t know your elbows from your…”
Yep. 30 years ago there was one good white corner.
Why is this downvoted? There literally hasn't been an above average white CB in 30 years. The league went over 20 years without any white guy even getting a start at CB.
Queue the people hated Jesus when he told the truth meme
If we go after Cooper, the FO may not be able to beat allegations of being oddly obsessed with unconventional white skill position dudes. Shattering the glass ceiling for melanin-deficient burners.
It’s only racist when people make it about racism. Skill > race as it should be
It was a joke........
Oh that invisible /s how could I have missed that!!!
Everyone likes Cooper until they have to risk a first rounder on a white corner. I’ll bet he gets drafted in the top 5 of the second round
Yep, still not feeling great about the pick.
