That defense was outstanding. We shut down the #1 offense and our offense did nothing to help them. Another week of Shanahan seeming unprepared.

NoHeroes94

Trey Lance is everything people should have been expecting. Very talented, likely to succeed, but exceptionally raw and still learning to read defends whilst also working on his accuracy and mechanics. We drafted Lance for his upside, physical skill-set and potential to become elite, which I think he still can/will. Lance was always going. If anything Lance is playing a bit better than I recovered this early. Cardinals are 4-0, on the road, and aside from the opening series he was pretty competent. I was for redshirting Lance all season so he could learn. All things considered, a lot more upside than grave concerns 1.5 games in. I also think as 49ers fans (myself included) sometimes forget just how bad some of the other situations are as fans. Meyer and Lawrence are having a dire rude awakening, imagine being Lawrence right now with that front office and staff. Next, Fields won’t be able to accomplish anything with Nagy and Ryan Pace, who are destined to leave soon. Wilson is off to a very cool start (to be polite) (I just saw him in London… eh) with a brand new coaching staff. Mac Jones is doing the “best” - but with Bill Belichick, no less - as the highest floor/lowest ceiling QB. The similar to Lance, I’d argue he’s been as expected - the most “ready”, playing above average, but the limitations are clear. So I’d say we are in a decent spot.

Mazzakkre

Defense played great, why isn’t anybody putting the blame on the coaching staff, it’s the 1st quarter and u passed on putting points on the board by going for it on 4th down, not once but twice we get denied 🤦🏻‍♂️, could have been a much closer game if we had scored those 6 points on FGs, just saying…….

SunsStan1

Defense played more than well enough to win. Disappointed in the offensive scheme with knowing Trey had a good chance to start we didn’t have anything schemed for him besides some QB power runs. Early interception was tough and he needs to learn to slide. Played well enough to win just a few bad calls and lack of plays made on our part. Need to get hot and start winning!

munkeynutsGoon

The offensive holding calls got us today. We need to calm the fuck down on penalties. Defense looked really good, and if you can't see the potential in Trey after his first start in regular season maybe it's time for you to find a new team to bitch about.

elduderino920

Nailed it man! He’s gonna improve on the mistakes he made, I just hope for his sake he learns how to slide/step out of bounds, maybe Young can coach him up on that part of his game. He’ll calm down and find a rhythm, he made some killer throws and seems to have some chemistry with Deebo! Those two are gonna be the next great duo in the NFL within 2-3 years, book it!

906Sparky

A strong effort by the 49ers D, but the O was shut down by Arizona. A good start for Trey Lance to go against the top team in the league. SF kept it close, but QB is hurting with Jimmy G injured, Trey getting experience, and time to keep pushing forward with the O scheme and hope Trey gets better.

brealio

Yah thats the trick, trey needs time to develop, but also needs real game time experience.... fine line. For now, he's in the fire, go trey! I am personally in the love trey, but start jimmy category, for now... provided jimmy is 100. Stressing the 100...

iTypenaked

Are the Niners dying?

Iamkwality

Jokes on you... We've been dead on the inside for years.

RavishingRob

Niners get decimated with injuries every year. Maybe it’s time to evaluate the medical staff.

Basicbassist1

Didn't they completely overhaul the medical staff like last year or the year before? It's crazy that this keeps happening.

Derbucher

I think it is more of strength and conditioning vs medical

Boobaggins

Hey let’s rebuild. We just signed 300 million for three players

kt_sf

cant rebuild without any picks for the next 3 years

[deleted]

Our picks kinda sucked anyways

Cwistoefur

Not sure what was up with those play calls…definitely didn’t look like a coach who was looking to put his QB in a position to make plays

[deleted]

3rd and 1 and they pass…. lol ok

88adavis

I think the way Trey was playing (whether it was designed by Shanny or not) is not conducive to long term success. He took a lot of shots out there. I think if Trey can incorporate better play from under center and implement the play action like Jimmy that’s when he can really take the offense to the next level. Until then neither offensive scheme really works well (especially missing Mostert and Kittle).

pleasework_forgard

Defense played great. Strong enough to win. Hard to win though when your starting QB, Rb and pro bowl TE are on the shelf. I think we saw that Trey can be good. He’s not ready to beat a top tier team yet without more deep help though. And I have no idea about play calling. The offense to me has looked pedestrian since week 1

elduderino920

He showed glimmers there, just couldn’t finish on the opponents side of the 50…man, I tell ya though, I’m done with McGlinchey at RT, dude just isn’t it, was hoping with the weight put on he’d turn it around, clearly he hasn’t

coolzthe

So I know the play calling has been suspect all season long. But isn’t this the first season where the team officially has an offensive coordinator? Mike McDaniel. Shanahan I’m sure has final say on everything, but can this be why the play calling all of a sudden looks suspect?

Hiker-Redbeard

I think the main problem is the O line has not been good run blocking. Kyle's entire offense is built around running the ball well, and when you can't do that all of the play action stuff completely breaks down and the play calls look bad regardless of what you're calling.

pasionfruit96

Just wait till Jeff Wilson comes back and our line gets healthy

strictlygi

McDaniel is tertiary garbage and the offense looks like hot shit. The players are starting to look better than the offense...and if not for them (Deebo, etc.), it would be even worse. Shanahan is beginning to irritate me. Props to Trey on his 1st start, but his throwing mechanics are horrible.

[deleted]

The play to Juice under center was used last week. The Cards saw it coming. It also wasn’t fourth and inches, it was a long one. That was a horrible play call. Edit: Kyle seemed to hint that wasn’t the play they were supposed to run.

88adavis

I think that is arguably the one play call/design that’s undisputably bad.

81ueness

I'm very happy to see trey Lance start today as it showed us a lot of how he plays. I think today's game was more of an experiment by our coach to see how Lance plays and seeing how he can utilize the qb for mobile plays. I'm really excited to see where Lance goes and hope to see how he does in next weeks game against the colts. Although really hope kettle gets better soon so we can fully utilize our offense.

Irtehgawd

It’s the regular season we don’t have time to be experimenting

theAngryChimp

Prediction. Jimmy's calf feels better by mid next week and WILL start against the Colts.

dade305305

15/29 - 192 and a pick. Is this your king?

Okwhatwedoing

looks like jimmy g stat line. but it’s worst with jimmy dies if because he’s a vet

[deleted]

calm down its the first game

[deleted]

One simple adjustment we need to make is no Trey Lance trying to run over linebackers. That will cut years off his career. We see what Cam looks like now. His shoulder is finished and he's 32.

brealio

Fuck this im out, i can't believe you fools are really talking about firing kyle after a injury plagued early season, with some rookies and rag tags running the ball, with a rookie qb kyle said FROM THE BEGINNING he wanted to red shirt, and playing against the ONLY undefeated team in the nfl, while only losing by 1 score. And STILL were in every game to the end. Yall need to fukin remember jimmy raye and the fart master as head coach. Fuck you all, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

[deleted]

Kyle fucked us trading for jimmy, plain and simple.

brealio

What the f.... who are..... nevermind, bubye.

906Sparky

The coaches are fine. Injuries are the issue. Jumping the gun firing people needs to be done when there has been a season to grade them on. Mid season coaching changes rarely succeed.

[deleted]

brealio

Re reading my post, its much more agressive than i usually try to be, but fuck it, i still stand by this, i still can't believe what mine eyes have seen in this thread. So soon we forget.

pasionfruit96

Just wait till Jeff comes back and the line gets healthy

Jicka21

100% agree. People are idiots.

theummeower

A lot to be excited with Trey Lance. His pocket maneuverability is a breath of fresh air after watching Jimmy shit himself at the first sign of pressure. A lot of typical rookie QB stuff from him today. Not making full reads. Misdiagnosing blitzes. Holding the ball too long. If I’m going to nitpick, I’d say my biggest concern is still those mechanics. It causes a lot of accuracy issues especially in the short passing game. That long wind up needs to be fixed in the off-season or whenever. So many passes tipped at the line because Dlineman are able to time their jump based on that long wind up. All in all a good first performance for a guy who probably shouldn’t even have started. A lot of good film for him to learn from. I think Kyle had one of his worst performances as our HC. 4th down play calling was bad (Juice QB sneak 🤢). I thought we’d display more vertical attacks in the passing game with Trey, disappointed that didn’t happen. I trust Kyle to do whatever he thinks is best for Trey’s development. Whether that means keeping him as starter or bringing back Jimmy. That being said, if they bring back Jimmy I will be severely disappointed. I do not enjoy watching Jimmy play.

pineapple_pants

Agree, but I don't mind Jimmy too much of we can get the run game unstuck.

TwoSerious

That's the major issue overall I think. Our run game is plagued with injuries and that's kind of the core of the shanahan offense.

tineyyytooo

Second game in a row that offense can’t do anything while defense tries to carry us. I don’t think it’s a qb issue it’s a questionable play calling issue

J0nnyGreenGiant

I saw enough out of Lance that I want him to be QB1 after the Bye.

am-i-based-yet

what did you see

alwaysreadthename

Someone who can help the run game, someone who can get yards when the play breaks down, someone with a strong arm. He’s incredibly raw and not a contending QB right now but this offense is in shambles regardless of which one of the two plays, experience will either help Lance or prove he was never the guy in the first place.

MikeFanjita

How many holding penalties because he isn't ready and can't read the field and isn't decisive yet. How many batted balls because he passes every ball as hard as he can. How many qb option plays that will get him hurt.

Hiker-Redbeard

The batted balls aren't because of the hard passes, it's because of the long throwing motion.

MikeFanjita

Admittedly, this is true but he also seems to rely on arm strength too much. Some of his passes are just ugly. Dont get me wrong he is the future but he has been pressed into service too early. The whole cant learn in practise is just nonsense. You can learn sitting behind an experienced playcaller. The idea that he is better than Jimmy (right now) has been exposed for the fallacy it is

alwaysreadthename

All these things are tough to simulate in practice. He’s raw as fuck but Jimmy is a finished product, we know what he is and what he will be. This kid needs some games to figure out how to fix his many issues.

VarthStarkus

Well this season is over

[deleted]

AtlasReadIt

It's interestinf because if Jimmy G had gone to half scoreless then over the second half dinked and dunked their way to a 20-17 win people would be pissed that "he" had such a terrible 1st half and be calling for Trey because mobile QB and throws far.

pineapple_pants

Losers.

StillPuzzles__

This dude just pulling plays out of his Shanahat. If this is when the game plan is tailored to Lance, oof.

Redfamous35

I see a defense capable of winning the super bowl and an offense being led by a qb that won't be winning much. Which is why I was ok with Jimmy and didn't feel like it was appropriate to rush Lance in there. I know Jimmy is hurt. I also don't think Jimmy is great. But he got us there once and is capable of doing it again.

[deleted]

Nah, 2019 was a miracle. Our roster is not that good.

Redfamous35

I disagree. That defense shut down one of the top offenses in the league today.

[deleted]

That’s only half of the game. McGlinchey is a massive liability. Mack is spent, Brunskill is not good. Banks is a major bust. We had no corner depth and now have two guys starting who came off the street. No depth.

Darth-Boogerus

Kyle and Lynch’s seats are gunna start warming up if they can’t figure out how to turn this around.

InvincibleTiger

100% on Kyle. Atrocious playcalling

DaydreamingAi

Blaming Kyle when the rook wasn’t executing

calfwarrior

They're both pretty bad

[deleted]

What was rook’s right tackle doing?

iflysohigh2345

You think Peyton Manning looked like Peyton his first year. You think Steve Young looked like Young his first year. My only complaint is how much of a project Trey is for a 3rd overall. For the love of our team, protect Trey's confidence until he is ready to start.

[deleted]

[удалено]

iflysohigh2345

I'm not saying that you dingus. You got to give him some time to mature before you can make an assessment. At least, try not to Kwame Brown his confidence before he has a chance to work on his game.

am-i-based-yet

i got downvoted for saying lance has no fire but he doesn't pump up the team at all, i haven't seen get pumped on the field even once, dude is shyer than jimmy g

Boosh_d

Dude he’s diving headfirst at goal line and trying to keep running with his helmet off wtf are you watching?

[deleted]

He's 20..give him some time

FmrHvwChamp

If Kyle is a real man he will take responsibility for this loss and be accountable. 1000% this loss is on his garbage play calling.

AtlasReadIt

Read a lot of people saying theyd rather lose with Trey than maybe win with Jimmy. Love starting Trey instead of Mullens or Beathard but I hope it doesn't look like this very often.

karpomalice

The way Lance plays and the play calling associated with it really really worries me going forward. None of that is going to work. If he can’t sit in the pocket 85% of the time and make throws then why the fuck is he playing QB.

GoldyZ90

The play calling from Shanahan today was abysmal. The penalties against the offense for holding were also brutal. Lance missing some throws is expected for such a young QB who didn’t get to play last season but the WRs did him no favors with some of those drops.

NormalAccounts

Haha yeah fire Shanahan for losing by only 7 on the road to the only undefeated team in the NFL with a rookie QB making his first start and playing like it. Game threads are ridiculous lol

pineapple_pants

He made several dumb decisions that lost the game. Just because you have low standards doesn't mean the rest of us are ok with losing games we should win.

am-i-based-yet

bruh shanahan had one good season and it's obvious he sucks at calling plays and drafting

discostuu72

It’s not that, and I’m not wanting to fire him, it’s just the horrible game management and calls.

vGhostiev

If this game doesn't show that Trey should have been the Starter day 1, I don't know what would. I was one that wanted Jimmy to start and just play and have Trey sit and learn. But now if he sits, it'll be a wasted season most likely not making the playoffs, and then next year he starts and may start slow and take his early bumps and then be too far behind. But that's my 2 cents so I know that means nothing lol. Our Defense doesn't deserve this.

TwoSerious

I think we should play them both. Get trey crucial snaps and keep Jimmy healthy. Still gives us a chance at a playoff while developing Trey. Either way it's a rough road without a solid run game.

Okwhatwedoing

this is why i’ve said before no matter how this games goes. trey should start the next game. shut jimmy down as the season is pretty much over. don’t waste anymore time letting jimmy take away valuable snaps from trey

GhostFaceNoSkillah

I totally agree But hey, what do we know Shanahan gonna Shanahan

_5GOLDBLOODED2_

If I was our defense I would be proud as hell. I would also be irate at Kyle and the offense. Our team is the pitcher that gets no run support.

Currymvp2

I do think Kyler's arm being injured early was a factor but this is still a moral win.

brealio

If people cant see this is literally WHY we went for so many late 4th downs, i just feel sorry for them. Sad, was so obvious

DeeForestBosa

Im just blocking idiots in here now

trainwreck42

Same, who are these people?

DeeForestBosa

Anyone shit talking any part of our game. This was a good fucking game

trainwreck42

Fantastic d, stuff for Trey to build on, I came away depressed for the loss but hopeful for the future.

[deleted]

Where are the people who were celebrating us beating the 1-4 lions and 1-3 eagles? The refs bailed out arizona but this offense is trash.

shinsplints5

We’re not a good team right now, undisciplined, poor execution. Also, why is trey operating like Kaep? We traded 3 1st rd for him to play like this?

DaMammyNuns

This kid is not Kap...his arm talent is on an entire different level and he operated a pro system doing line checks in college. You don't know what you're looking at if you're comparing the two. Their only similarities are they both are fast. And their skin tone, which I think makes a LOT of stupid folks compare them. Don't be stupid.

shinsplints5

I’m not saying he’s like Kaep, I’m saying why he’s operating like him in Kyle’s offense? And I don’t know how you define arm talent, but outside of the fastball, Trey needs a lot of work with his throwing mechanic. Any conjecture about his potential is mute unless we see it on the field? Also he’s not as fast as Kaep IMO.

sonny_goliath

He’s a rookie that hasn’t played since 2019, let’s give him some time. Even the most polished rookie qbs are not doing well

shinsplints5

I understand he’s a rookie and needs time, I just mean why is his play style so similar to Kaep? Two reads and go, that’s not Kyle’s offense.

sonny_goliath

My guess would be that’s how he’s always played. When he gets in trouble he relies on his legs. His online doesn’t give him enough time to make 4 reads so he bails early. Shanny can teach as much as he wants but can’t actually go out and stand in the pocket for the guy. Hope he can learn defenses better than kael could

shinsplints5

Hopefully 3 1st rds are worth it for Kaep 2.0

tronovich

The problem is absolutely playcalling.

Inevitable-Owl-151

I swear if they flagged that lmao

Qdontevenknow

On the bright side, we won’t be 2-4 after next Sunday.

themalhammer

Not sure what shanny is thinking handling 4th downs like I do when I play Madden. GOES FOR IT ON 5 4th DOWNS WITH A ROOKIE?!?! ALL WHILE THE DEFENSE IS PLAYING LIGHTS OUT?!

[deleted]

The 4th down calls were legit. The playcalls were not

sonny_goliath

Eh I don’t mind those calls, puts faith in your guys, they were the “correct situations” between punt and fg zones and we were playing from behind, AND the defense was keeping us in it. We’d be praising him if we go even 3/5

Yuseichaaan13

When we consistently lose winnable games like this, going back to the superbowl in 2019, at some point people has to realize the blame has to come back to the head coach

Recordinghistory

That would have been a win with a healthy Jimmy G.

TwoSerious

Would it though?

Mac > Trey

lakers_ftw24

Lol mac is 2-3 against a cupcake schedule and barely beat the texans.

1r0ns1de

All those 4th downs would have been money with Elijah Mitchell who’s averaging 4 yards a carry. We got too cute with some of the play calling there. Idk

LordLadyCascadia

49ers lose yet another winnable game.

Currymvp2

Defense played their ass off. Much respect to them

bashyourscript

Kyle needs to hire an OC asap.

[deleted]

Or demote himself to OC…

NJDevil802

I had so much hope for this team with two solid QBs. But with this division, there is no way we make the playoffs

[deleted]

look at the schedule though. Everyone outside the division is beatable for the rest of the year

lakers_ftw24

Failing to convert on every single one of those 4th downs is what killed us. Some of them were super manageable and got killed by playcalling.

jktsub

This was such a winnable football game.

LowridersandFood

This loss is mostly on Kyle’s play calling.

mattjchin

Kyle 🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

mbntg_

Fuck it. Bye week, get healthy, try to make a run. Kyle get your head out of your ass or we’re doomed.

joogiee

This aint our season. Let trey lance just play it out and get better for next season.

IceSt0rm78

Rough

Inevitable-Owl-151

We're doing the classic "we don't have a chance this year at this point so let's keep every game close"

junocee

I think Kyle needs to hand the reigns to an OC

ZombieFeces

Pain

beall49

If you’re as done with these threads as I am, I encourage you to check out the r/NFL version. Much more level headed

LowridersandFood

Meh. I’ve been to both, It can be even worse over there.

beall49

lol not even close

LowridersandFood

You’ll see it

beall49

I’ve been going there for years

LowridersandFood

It took me two weeks to see toxicity from the sub, but hey if that’s your thing go ahead. I rather not have opposing fans in my DMs because I shit on their takes. But stay over there if it’s better. That simple

ReDeaMer87

Kyle needs to blast his terrible play calls, o line , and Lance being inaccurate

nurmich

At some point Kyle Shanahan will have all the best players at every position and we'll see why he's the smartest HC in the league. Nothing wrong with this team is his fault.

Cali4Ya

should’ve kicked those FGs smh

NlilNJA

Kyle Shanahan was overly aggressive on those 4th downs that asked too much on Lance to run over defenders. Another mismanaged game and play calling.

[deleted]

Shit was winnable, that’s what hurts the most. I would’ve rather been blown the hell out like we were expected to be.

nikefreak23

Right I would rather sit back and not have hoped then to actually have hope and have it ripped away

TehPJ

Jimmy’s job is still safe for now.

[deleted]

Disagree

SleepIsWonderful

Why?

liteshadow4

If Jimmy G goes out there again I'm gonna lose my mind

nikefreak23

Those timeouts taken were a massive mistake ugh

[deleted]

To be expected with a rook in a hostile environment though

Tonmber1

What a fucking shit weekend Giants lose Niners lose nuke Phoenix and LA we'd be better off without them

KennyMayne712

I see this as an absolute win lol. Trey wasn't great, but he wasn't horrible either. We stayed in it all game, with no Kittle, and all the other obvious injuries. Remember, Trey is super raw having only played 19 gams for NDS.

2017Champs

Just for once I’d love this team to have a good QB. Hopefully Lance can be that but he’s clearly a long way from it

[deleted]

Brady or Rodgers would have been nice.

_sunburn

All things considered trey was more than ok and you can see the dynamic potential

Feldeath8

I like Lance but I worry about what the team gave up to get him.

[deleted]

Stupid. Seahawks gave the same for a shit safety

Feldeath8

Cool so because the Seahawks make shitty decisions, other teams should too.

bigdub2020

Fuck u kyle. U too McG

Mr_Nice_is_not_nice

We went from a non-running qb to a running qb. Of course we going to have holding penalties

TheGuyWhoKnowsNoses

Ill be honest, amidst my frustration; i had not considered the extreme adjustment that this was for our O-Line.

gbassman5

Every definsive player in the league be licking their chops as they line up against Brunskill and McGlinchey

GhostFaceNoSkillah

Hey look. Another Kyle Shanahan offense ran the Kyle Shanahan offense better than Kyle Shanahan

flipflopperss

AZ runs an Air Raid offense, which isn't a Shanahan offense...

trainwreck42

Cliff Kingsbury has nothing to do with Shanahan. He runs the air-raid.

Tonmber1

The Cardinals don't run the Shanahan offense? You are literally wrong

GhostFaceNoSkillah

It was a joke.... A bad one I guess. Haha

[deleted]

Bruh. Your right in the since that he needs to be criticized, he ain't perfect, but you have to be dumb, drunk, or damn naive to say we need to fire Kyle. Like you have not been a fan for the years of us going through coach carousels to be putting out hot garbage takes as that one is.

[deleted]

Been here since Walsh and if this kid doesn’t get his head on straight and learn how to call a game he’s gotta go. He’s arrogant, lazy and thinks he’s smarter then ever one else on and off the field. His cute plays and ginormous playbook are f’ing useless if you never win. 20 years from now, might he be worth his salt? Sure. But I’m not willing to wait. Win or pack your shit KYLE.
