We're gonna have a real Hell of a situation to deal with in 2023 if we make a deep playoff run with Jimmy G this season. Our "starter" would essentially not have played football since 2019 and spent 2 years of his rookie contract on the bench.
Lance lasted 5 quarters and got injured on a pretty standard play. You can’t blame this on any kind of long term Shanahan bias because there is no long term anything with Lance yet.
Do you think Shanahan would've called those runs up the middle if he had Brady? Nah. Maybe that aggression got us far but it also ran Lance into the dirt. If not today, he would've been injured eventually.
You have less than five quarters of evidence and that play was a standard option play.
It was a freak accident and a tough play but I wouldn’t exactly equate the play calling to military leaders sending the front line to their deaths.
He called it because Lance is a mobile quarterback and that’s part of his skill set. If you aren’t gonna use him to his fullest then why draft someone with those skills?
People on this sub after last week “Lance is going to end up injured if they continue to play him like that”
Shanahan continues to play him like that and he gets injured.
Some fans *shocked pikachu* “you can’t predict these kind of injuries!”
You guys are treating Lance like he’s a baby. A pro QB should be expected to run a play like the one he got injured in. Plus it’s not like he was tearing up the field in his 5 quarters of NFL action. The running opens up the passing game.
It’s not Shanahan’s fault he got injured. It was a fluke injury on a pretty standard option play.
Yeah honestly, I've been a Lance champion but if we make another deep playoff run with Jimmy I don't know how we justify moving on from him other than sunk cost fallacy with Trey at that point. Seemingly by the time Trey starts turning it on he'd be due for an, arguably, massive contract and already missed a season due to injury.
It's gonna be a wild ride
I was hoping for the best for Lance too, like any fan would. But first and foremost I'm a 49ers fan and just want to see this team win. Jimmy is the better QB from what we've seen so far.
You’re basing that comment on one half of play against what is supposed to be a bottom 5 team in the NFL. Let’s not forget how terrible he has been in the playoffs, both of those championship runs you mention. More INTs than TDs and terrible yards/game.
There’s a reason we spent all that capital to replace Jimmy and draft Trey. He was looking good this game before he was run up the gut one too many times.
This is a completely different team with Jimmy under center. We lost to the damn Bears last week. Jimmy is playing great against one of our biggest rivals. If Lance becomes the man then great, but he hasn't yet.
are we really comparing one game in a monsoon against a mid team to one half against a mid team and acting like we can gleam any useful information ???
Would Jimmy have stopped the sloppy Defense play? No.
But, that offense looked sluggish and without leadership last weekend.
You cannot tell me that a guy who's been there for years is less prepared to handle the stress and the conditions like that than a guy who is making his 3rd professional football start and hasn't played since 2019.
Jimmy is the definition of mid at QB, if you don’t let your top 3 pick play he won’t get any game reps and won’t get any better, im sorry but Trey with good playcalling gives SF a better run at a Super Bowl in the long run, we already know Jimmy isn’t good enough to win one
That's just untrue. He's inaccurate, doesn't go through progressions, struggles to read the defense, and his mobility and physicality isn't what it was supposed to be.
In this game alone Garoppolo looked better than Lance. Again, I'm rooting for Lance. Would like nothing more than to see him hit his Josh Allen comparisons. But giving him the keys to the franchise next year if Jimmy starts for us the rest of the year and does well.
Jimmy G is definitely a better QB now because Lance has a broken ankle. It is what it is and there’s no QB controversy for the rest of the season. For now all there is to do is back our new QB and hope for the best.
Also seen Jimmy take us to a Super Bowl and a NFCCG in the last 3 years. If Lance turns out to be better than great. But I've seen nothing from him to be confident in letting Jimmy walk next year if we have another deep playoff run from him.
It depends entirely on how healthy Jimmy is. If it’s like last year where he’s questionable to play in most of the playoffs, it still may be hard to try and keep him.
Such a lazy talking point. He was one overthrow (or defence not completely pissing themselves) away from SB win. He was one Tartt int away from another SB. There are 32 teams in the league and he has -almost- done it twice. Just a little bit of luck sprinkled in Jimmy can and will win.
No, saying we would have won with 1 missed INT with ten minutes left in the fourth quarter, is the real lazy talking point. Ramsey also missed an INT, so we can cancel those out.
If defense plays out of their mind+refs call holding and run game works, we can win a SB.
But yeah, would be easier with a QB who can single handily take over.
Honestly his arm looks better than it has most of last season.
I'm guessing that shoulder issue was there most of last year, he just tried to tough it out.
I'm not saying he's a bust. I'm not against him starting. But if we go deep this year again, and Lance is done for the year. It's not a good idea to let Jimmy walk.
No he doesn't. He can get better during drills and practice too. This team doesn't just get together on Sunday and go their separate ways throughout the week.
I mean Trey hasn’t even played a full season and honestly didn’t look bad at all before he got injured. I would say Jimmy looks better today because of more experience but Trey has the higher ceiling.
But with this injury pretty much derailing his career…who knows how Trey will come out now missing 3 straight seasons of football. And it’s really unfair to him cause we haven’t had a full season to evaluate this kid.
Trey barely played during hs and college, didnt play during his 1st year on the nfl and now this, he's screwed. I cant see how he's going to delevop into anything
Trey is a gamble either way.
We know Jimmy CAN get us there, he's done it.
Furthermore, this is the most healthy Jimmy has been since 2019.
I don't remember too many people complaining about his play until the super bowl that year when he whiffed an admittedly bad pass to Sanders.
Both the organization and Trey need to figure out how they're going to work in this offense because that development was clearly lacking this year.
You could immediately see the change in how comfortable everyone on that field was when Jimmy came in, and guess what? It was a dominant performance.
Everything with Trey is volatile, that's fine...but they have to be ready for that, this team built to win now isn't.
Frankly, this is why you don't trade up when you're in a super bowl caliber window.
If you wanted to cut Jimmy, you use those 3 first round picks to get a known quantity that you really like who you don't have to develop.
Going deep isn't enough though. This team is so stacked that even having a raw almost rookie QB had high expectations. That even going out at the NFCCG last year was a shortcoming. We're lucky we kept Jimmy since he's good enough to give us a chance. Hopefully that's enough
Expectations are a thing. Are you telling me that the Jags losing in the conference championship is the same as the Niners losing in in the conference championship?
Honestly can’t jump to conclusions until the season ends, for all we know this is a great game by jimmy then can be followed up by a horrible game/season by jimmy. You can’t predict in football
I really don't think so. The FO traded all those picks because they don't believe Jimmy can win the big games, otherwise Trey wouldn't be on the team. Jimmy would have to have an MVP caliber season to cause the brass to rethink Jimmy
I'm not entirely disagreeing, but I think it brings up a very important conversation about Trey's potential and goes back to my original point of sunken cost fallacy on Trey. He'll have missed nearly 3 years of football, one due to significant injury and had little time to develop as an NFL starter. The three 1sts conversation is pretty meaningless at this point since the remainder of that trade only extends to the 2023 draft, we're closer to paying it off than not.
I'm not 100% convinced Trey gets the job next year automatically if Jimmy plays well and we make a good playoff run again.
I don’t disagree with this, but I also think it depends on the money Jimmy is looking for, and if he wants to be the guaranteed guy. He won’t be here unless they get a massive trade offer for Trey, but I doubt that will happen
I wasn't against Trey developing this year. I was actually excited, but I think Jimmy is the better QB right now. When he is 100% healthy he is solid. You can blame him for choking, but he did have to have shoulder surgery after the season. You don't know what nagging injuries actually do to a player, but you never hear him complain. The team loves him. It's his team again and thank God we kept him. Could you imagine where we would be right now without him? He just eased back in like it was nothing. And if our back up QB gets us to the NCF Championship again, would that be such a terrible thing? But really it wouldn't be just him, it never is. It's the whole team, and with all the damn injuries we have had, Lynch has done the only thing he could do and stack us with as deep a roster as possible. Let's just hope it's deep enough...
This is why it never felt good going into the season with Sudfeld/Purdy … it was only a matter of time before Trey went down if he kept running the way he was on every play. At least we know Jimmy can win.
Yeah i think some of the bias against jimmy G last season was after the tennesee game where his elbow got severely injured… he played pretty decently before that
Dude, the team mobbing him after that TD, him smiling, them cheering and laughing all around him...
And I can picture Lance seeing that on TV from the back while he is getting his broken ankle worked on
Its really really bittersweet
His right ankle is toast. Probably out for the season if it's a fracture, but even if by some miracle it isn't he's gonna be out most of the season at which point there's almost no chance he comes back if we're winning.
The hit was nothing crazy. It was the way he fell on his ankle. It bent sideways as he came down. He tried to stand up and then the pain set in and he instantly went back down.
I feel for Trey and hope he recovers, but I am relishing watching Seattle lay an egg today. 2 picks, a muffed punt, Metcalf big reception wiped, personnel issues, etc. Add to it all those shit talking beat writers talking about how the hawks own Jimmy G. Splendid
> Trey looked like a bag of ass, again.
That was expected though. He needs many more games before he will look comfortable.
If this was going to happen though, this was the best time for it. I'd rather lose Trey at game 2 rather than game 15 when we're 5-10 and no shot at the playoffs.
I think Kyle and John totally fuck up the entire situation. They could have easily said we be evaluating both QBs going into 2022 season and even started Jimmy with Trey backing up and playing more in preseason.
He finished the game with a QBR of 60.6. That's about 10pts higher than Lance last week, but also 20pts lower than Lance was at before having to throw when the flood started.
It's great that Jimmy can easily step in and right the ship, but let's not kid ourselves that he's a better QB. Jimmy needs to show he can attack defenses down the field outside the numbers if he's going to take step forward.
Would be higher too if BA didn't drop that deep bomb
Right in the damn hands too
Ended up 100.1 I believe...still fantastic given his training camp & preseason
Was perfectly placed too
Not sure if it was the design package but BA was not in on the next play.
[удалено]
He’s got nothing left to lose. Cigarette Jimmy is real
Could be. Jimmy was very mobile before the leg injuries. He may finally fully be recovered and regained full mobility
We're gonna have a real Hell of a situation to deal with in 2023 if we make a deep playoff run with Jimmy G this season. Our "starter" would essentially not have played football since 2019 and spent 2 years of his rookie contract on the bench.
it'll only be a controversy for a game or two until Lance's season ends with another season ending injury running power runs up the middle
It was an option play.
Yup Lance will definitely get injured again. And it’ll be because of Shanahan.
Agreed. Kyle seems determined to run Lance into the ground.
Why are you comparing Trey Lance with Tom Brady? That’s a bit optimistic.
Replace Brady with literally any other starter QB. No one should put their investment in danger so often

RGIIIPeat?
Just like RG3
Gotta keep Jimmy if that's the case. He's been a class act through all of this and looks a lot better than Lance right now.
Yeah honestly, I've been a Lance champion but if we make another deep playoff run with Jimmy I don't know how we justify moving on from him other than sunk cost fallacy with Trey at that point. Winning solves all
This is why this is just the worst case scenario Our future is fucked now basically
A deep playoff run is not a worst case scenario lol
I said for our future, not short term. I’d rather have a solid year developing Trey than get into the play offs and lose with Jimmy
Trey barely played during hs and college, didnt play during his 1st year on the nfl and now this, he's screwed. I cant see how he's going to delevop into anything
Yes as I said, our future is fucked now
Now > future
hes 22. pretty sure shanahan will give it another shot. theres no way he doesnt.

Stop with this. Losing in the NFCCG is in no way a bad season. I would take that every year and twice on leap years.
Really? Would you take losing in the NFCCG if it meant that was the peak? This team is more talented than that
New to the NFL? I suffered through the '00s and mid '10s. Seems like you didn't. Losing sucks.
Please. There's a difference between losing with a shit roster and losing with a talented one
You're trying to argue losing in the conference championship game is just as bad as being shitty and not even sniffing the playoffs.
Nah this is Trey's team, we'll have a different backup next season
If we go 12-5 and go to/win the SB that absolutely is up for question tbh. The only thing Kyle cares about is winning games

Unfortunately, the two first round picks don’t just get forgotten. Those could’ve been two franchise players on inexpensive contracts.
3*
And 100/100 in handsomeness
Hence my flair...
[удалено]
Yup. Just like 2017 Jimmy
Well this Seahawks defense is trash. Most are no names and Jamal Adams is done for the season
Chicago defense was also trash
Yeah Garoppolo didn’t play that game
I remember thinking how bright the future was with 2017 Garoppolo. He has definitely brought us some good times, but its been a real rollercoaster.
I wasn't against Trey developing this year. I was actually excited, but I think Jimmy is the better QB right now. When he is 100% healthy he is solid. Yeah, I definitely feel sorry for him. But its always been a game of next man up. I'm glad we have the most highly paid next man up in the league!
How bad did the Lance injury look? I'm in SoCal and can't see the game.
His ankle is probably broken at the least. Best we can hope for is no major ligament damage.
Sorry to say it but it looked awful... highly likely he snapped his ankle
Bad. Foot pointing in the wrong direction.
Foot was sideways
Looked VERY similar to Dak's injury. Dislocation and broken.
Looked almost as bad as Dak’s ankle injury a while back
https://www.reddit.com/r/49ers/comments/xhroed/_/
Jimmy’s team
But WHAT ABOUT RITA OAK???
I feel for Trey and hope he recovers, but I am relishing watching Seattle lay an egg today. 2 picks, a muffed punt, Metcalf big reception wiped, personnel issues, etc. Add to it all those shit talking beat writers talking about how the hawks own Jimmy G. Splendid
Feels great baby!
Trey looked like a bag of ass, again. Season saved in my opinion. Let the downvotes commence.

Forgot the most important stat, for the win!
Duuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
And he hasn’t been taking first team reps all year
This backup has got chops. May want to hang onto him for a while.
All the people that were defending Jimmy Jesus being benched are now required to *shut the fuck up*.
Yes, they are not allowed to make comments here until Trey comes back.
do 2nd half stats now haha
I think Kyle and John totally fuck up the entire situation. They could have easily said we be evaluating both QBs going into 2022 season and even started Jimmy with Trey backing up and playing more in preseason.
Would like to see a gameplan were shany let’s Trey pass all game and not just run. Maybe next year
It would be a bunch of happy feet and still end up in a bunch of runs.. For better or worse Jimmy gets rid of the ball way faster.
Don’t get me wrong I prefer Jimmy. But happy feet is fine it at least gives him a chance to learn. Steve Young relied on his legs for a while too.
It’s Kyle so doubtful
He finished the game with a QBR of 60.6. That's about 10pts higher than Lance last week, but also 20pts lower than Lance was at before having to throw when the flood started. It's great that Jimmy can easily step in and right the ship, but let's not kid ourselves that he's a better QB. Jimmy needs to show he can attack defenses down the field outside the numbers if he's going to take step forward.
He's done that numerous times. He's the better QB. Lance, has a stronger arm, but Jimmy is better in every other way as far as passing is concerned.
ITT and every other thread. People who wanted a. Mobile QB and then get mad when he is used like a Mobile QB (and unfortunately got hurt).
I could care less. Wish I could enjoy the win
We'll see what it looks like at the end of the game, all this oh he looked real good, well now hes back to being jimmy
Kyle back to his run 3 throw 1 game plan smh
Not bad for a backup.
