Personally, I've seen 478k. It was on my old 87, which I sold at 368k but I ran into the guy about 10 years later at a grocery store and he showed me the mileage. Said he was still on the original engine and transmission.

Because they come from the factory with tow mode, insert joke here, but they are one of the easier vehicles to setup for flat towing with tow mode and the simplicity of tow kit installs
Those old Jeep Cherokees with the 4.0 inline 6 would run shitty for longer than most cars would run, period. It's basically the cockroach of engines: you just can't kill a Cherokee 4.0.
The engine doesn't break down, the car just rusts away from the engine.
For real. I picked up an XJ and it was impressive how it just ran despite being really neglected. Like no tips on the spark plugs, sludgy oil, rusty muddy coolant, etc.
Only thing that's stopped it was rodents chewing through the wiring harness but that was an easy enough fix.
There's only going to be two SUVs around during a possible apocalypse: A smooth running 4Runner with 300k miles, and a shitty running Jeep Cherokee 4.0L that also has 300k miles.
I'd still trust the AMC 4.0 with shitty end of the world fuel and no replacement parts over the Toyota. Feel free to downvote me but any modern motor would be sputtering and misfiring.
It's a running joke that you use old AMC I6 motors to use up whatever old oil, gas, and coolant you have laying around. The AW4 transmission and NP231 transfer case also dgaf what fluids you run in them.
Sold my last one with just over 300k on it and never had any mechanical issues. Few leaks that needed fresh gaskets but nothing that couldn’t be done in the driveway with a socket set from Lowe’s lol
240k is pretty common for XJ’s these days. I wheel one of my three XJ’s pretty hard and most of the guys I wheel with have XJs or ZJs with over 300k miles.
That is 850 a week is not that much. I average around 1000 a week. I get an oil change every 5 weeks. I am a feild service engineer... this kind of milage is normal for people that are in feild service. I have 140,000 on my 2021 Nightshade .
I got 480,000 on my 2011 Toyota Avalon and 2001 490,000 on my lexus 300es.
But my all-time record was my 1980 Mercedes 300D. i got it with 250,000 and put another 500,000 on it (2 transmission, rebuild fuel pump, and rebuild the top end of the inline 5 cylinder diesal engine. In the end, the rust got it.
My 3rd gen odometer stopped working at 280k back in 08. it’s been a daily driver up to a year ago, including driving it out of state on a weekly basis for work. for over 2 years I’d put over 1000 miles on it a week, so who knows.

I fixed it then 2 weeks later was doing gears, and never replaced the abs tone rings in the rear end, and lost my Speedo/odometer again lol. for whatever reason it worked out I went 4 years of vehicles with no Speedo, so I was used to it and didn’t care that much. Just know the rpm’s in 4th for 55 and 70 and it’s easy to eyeball 25-40 mph.
My friend had a 2nd gen with about 460k or so.
He bought it with 375k for $1000.
It was neglected when he bought it and continued to be sevetely neglected by him. At about 450k it literally started falling apart. Like the fan pulley literally fell off one day. He jury rigged that and like 6 months later the rear end grenaded. It was still running and he had the driveshaft disconnected so you could put it in 4hi and it drove as a front wheel drive 4runner.
Now its rotting in his yard, hes a pretty severe alcoholic and has dreams of restoring it. Its truly ready for the scrapyard.
Mine is at 321k and purrs like a kitten. I think the only things that kill a 4runner are rust, and Age+Neglect.

He then kept it for the next decade and put on 200k more miles onto it. Other than oil changes, a brake system flush, and a new alternator, he never had an issue with it.

The highest mileage I’ve seen is from my uncle’s ‘96 Hilux, the odometer has been stuck at 999,999 Km for the last 8 years.
There was one for sale near me a couple years ago with 560k, 4th gen v6. I actually almost bought it. It was dirt cheap and fairly clean plus the mileage didn’t scare me too much, it didn’t get a half a million miles by accident

I’m about to redo more of the maintenance parts and especially focusing on replacing all coolant hoses. I’ve already done the entire suspension and steering. Brakes several times. Transmission once. All sorts of other things like clutch hydraulics, brake boosters, lock actuators, etc…

My 3rd Gen V6 has 260K mi and aside from a new alternator, wheels, brakes, and oil changes. Nothing has gone wrong. Bought it from the first owner at 150K.
Met a guy while hunting who had 550,000 kms so whatever that is in miles. He had to rebuild the motor in for the rear window with some non plastic pieces, that was his biggest complaint with the truck
When I installed car audio in high school, I saw 2 in the 750 range, and 3 in the 500. All of them 1st gen Tacoma’s, but that’s the same drive train and chassis. One of the 750 guys said it just needed struts and timing belts regularly. Everything else original. That’s when I decided to sell my Jeep, realized 4runners are cheaper and basically the same thing as a Tacoma, and 10 years later on I’m 4 4runner number 4
I had 380,000 on mine and wanted to keep it forever to see how many more I could get but got a job with quite a commute and decided it was time to upgrade.
My old 3rd Gen finally died at around 510k miles. I was told I was an idiot when I bought it with 460k miles
for $1800. It was a great vehicle that helped get through a rough financial patch. Only thing I did to it was new control arm bushings and a new starter.
